Joe Fuda And now, a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with a certain record label that is now old enough to drink in the US. Starting locally, with The Rural Alberta Advantage . After one of the best and busiest 2009s on record, the trio has been relatively quiet through most of this year working on the follow-up to their debut Hometowns , as these photos (sort of) attest. But you can only keep road warriors in one place for so long and [...]

Summer is a great time to not get things done. Time, I guess, to FALL BACK into a more regular release schedule. Enjoy the Portland. I've always been a dedicated listener of Portland, OR's Horse Feathers . So when they released their third album, Thistled Spring earlier this year, I instantly fell in love with the overwhelmingly lush instrumentation and sandy vocals that painted the record. Heading in a little more upbeat direction yet still capturing the feelings of struggle, Thistled Spring is probably Horse Feathers' most balanced and best work yet. I sat down with lead vocalist/guitarist Justin Ringle to talk about their new 72 vinyl single, Thistled Spring, Bumbershoot, and his current state of [...]

It was another beautiful day at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival, which was surprising considering the weather was supposed to be overcast for most of the weekend. This set the stage for some impressive performances by some of the best up and coming bands from the North West. I had some time to kill before my first act so I wandered over to the Flatstock showcase at the Center Building. If you ever wanted a concert poster by your favorite band by one of the best concert poster designers in the business, [...]
Jay Electronica Crowd ::: Photo by Abbey Simmons Day two of Bumbershoot was all about dualities for us. We bounced back and forth between impassioned sets from folk troubadours such as Billy Bragg, Dave Bazan and Horse Feathers and hip hop sets from Fresh Espresso and Jay Electronica that brought some serious swagger to the [...]

Redwood Plan ::: photo by Josh Lovseth "God, won't you just die already?" - A line of dialogue that exists in approximately 72% of all action movies. I said the same thing when I saw who the headliners were for Day Two of Bumbershoot 2010. Hole? Weezer? This would have been amazing back in 1994. Actually, I [...]
Is Nirvana one of most oft-covered bands of the past two decades? I know I've unleashed my version of "Polly" at every party I've been to since 1994. But that's me. Portland's Horse Feathers actually bring something new to their interpretation of "Drain You." The song-which they performed recently at the Doug Fir-will appear on Horse Feathers' forthcoming 7-inch. I'm still holding out for an acoustic version of "Milk It."
One of the new to me bands I am looking forward to seeing at this year's fest is Horse Feathers. Their Northwestern chamberfolk has kind of taken me by storm the last few weeks. The new album - Thistled Spring - is a beauty. Horse Feathers ∞ Thistled Spring

Mother nature did not cooperate on the last day of the Ottawa Folk Festival . So there was alot of rescheduling of the music workshops that was suppose to happened on the Sunday afternoon. Mostly spent being inside the Bowie Theatre all day. But overall with the chaos that happened, things went pretty smoothly. The workshop that I saw were: Sunny Side Up with Robyn Dell'Unto , The Musettes and Ladies of the Canyon [...]
Many of the sites I've featured in the "Other Stuff You Might Like" series have a common thread: excellent, impromptu concerts by established and upcoming musicians. We've looked at Luxury Wafers , Black Cab Sessions , They Shoot Music - Don't They , and NPR Music . (And I'm sure to get around to Daytrotter before too long...) Now, from France, we've got the excellent blog La Blogotheque, and its excellent Take-Away Shows (or, if you prefer, Les Concerts à Emporter ). The site's catalog of artists is truly amazing, as [...]

If you're reading this review, chances are you've rocked a festival in your day. So I'll ask you what I asked myself today: what factors make up the perfect festival? Saturday at Newport Folk Festival was close enough to perfection to get me to start pondering the question. Great bands, chill crowds, minimal hassle and lines, perfect weather, scenic backdrop, stages you can easily transfer between but that don't have any sound overlap, craft beers, and at least one chicken souvlaki vendor. Yup, it was tough to go wrong at Newport Folk Festival! [...]

Beautiful Newport, R.I. The summer is littered with upstart music festivals begging you to give over your ears and your earnings. Bonnaroo. Pitchfork. Lollapalooza 3.0. But while these whippersnappers battle for hipster cred, one venerable tradition soldiers on in unassuming yet consistently entertaining fashion: The Newport Folk Festival , the 38th installment of which took place on the beautiful shores of Rhode Island this past weekend. The Festival began in 1959, riding the coattails of the town's already successful jazz festival, and made an instant historical impact by introducing Joan Baez [...]

Guelph - The 27th annual Hillside Festival is in the books, and for the second year in a row the Panic Manual was there amidst the natural beauty of Guelph Lake Island (pictured above), covering the fest from Friday night mainstage opener Beardyman to Sunday night closer Stars. Punctuated with pictures, here are our picks for best, worst, and everything in between from Hillside 2010. Most Danceable: Alex Cuba We were a bit lukewarm about seeing Alex [...]
Filed under: The Hit List , Free MP3 Download of the Day In a summer concert circuit crowded with large-scale music festivals, George Wein's Newport Folk Fest consistently stands out for its impressive multigenerational lineup of blues, folk and bluegrass acts. This weekend, an eclectic mix of artists including Andrew Bird, the Swell Season, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings will be taking the [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Live It Out , Canada Spaceamoeba, Flickr A longstanding tradition at Guelph's annual Hillside Festival is the Sunday-morning gospel workshop that brings together a wide range of artists, usually of the folk- and country-influenced variety, for a rousing two-hour jam session that focuses on old-timey originals and standards. With the Island Stage tent crammed with tired-but-happy festivalgoers, including plenty of families [...]

Sailing To Nowhere - Broken Bells Right now I wish I could be... sailing to nowhere would be the most elegant solution to my situation. A great escape into the wild. My choice isn't too far from this though. Leaving for a few days to the Canadian countryside, relaxing in a roundhouse cabin on the Lac Saint-Jean will make everything better, I know it. Another great thing will be waiting for me when I come back : Osheaga Festival [...]

There's this drive that I do on a fairly regular basis but for some reason I never take the exact same route. It's fairly open country and there are a couple of towns that I try to hit up on the way, and as long as I pass through them without diverting too much the drive usually takes around the same amount of time. Last weekend I found yet another new way to go and came across this tiny abandoned church. It was missing a front door and was completely empty inside save for a few scribblings [...]
