Ever since hearing "You Explained Away Everything" from Horse Stories 2006 album "Everyone's A Photographer", I have enjoyed the laid back melancholic pop of Toby Burke and he has been on my radar. The new album just released is "November, November" and sounds exactly like the title might lead you to believe - it is a little slice of a fall season (or early spring if I had to say, as it does show more movement to the pop side of things at times). I am not sure too much on what the lead off track is, but [...]
by Joel Chaffee Horse Stories , whose fifth LP, November, November saw release January 19th, was a quiet electric ballad Thursday night at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn. Writer, singer and rhythm guitarist Toby Burke stood while Luther Russell assumed a stool and played a bluesy, poppy lead guitar, melodies and some wonderful tremolo assuming prominence. [...]

Oh No Ono I checked out Denmark's latest export, Oh No Ono, on a whim a couple weeks ago knowing almost nothing about band. It turned out to be time well spent however as the experimental collective's sophomore effort, Eggs , is one of the most enjoyably strange and genuinely fascinating albums I've heard so far this year. Over the course of ten tracks, Oh No Ono takes you on a psychedelic journey ranging from nimble pop tunes to hazy, meandering rockers that incorporate myriad musical elements and themes. [...]

Aussie-born singer/songwriter Toby Burke and a small revolving cast of supporting musicians make up Horse Stories , a critically-lauded fusion of Americana folk/rock and lovingly lush, orchestrated chamber pop. After the release of his 2005 Everyone's A Photographer -- hailed in the Brit press as "unfettered melancholy bliss" (NME) -- and a supporting worldwide tour, Burke settled in L.A., holed himself up in a makeshift garage studio and began a two year process that has now yielded his discreetly audacious fourth album November, November set for digital release stateside January 19. [...]
Toby Burke, the singer/ songwriter behind Horse Stories is somewhat a maverick, somewhat an old soul; a maverick in the sense that his songs persist in setting a scene or creating an oasis for the listener to submerge themselves. His songs are akin to small bookworms which burrow into your senses through careful measured advances. They're the songs that come to you piece by piece, that acquaint

[Quick reviews of a whole slew albums I received late in the year and didn't get a chance to acknowledge:] The Stevenson Ranch Davidians , "Life & Death" (self-released) — The L.A. quartet's sophomore release has all the fuel for a psych-pop burner — gently rolling melodies, gorgeous guitar textures, plenty of allusions and excursions to the cosmos — but the L.A. quartet never puts the pedal to the metal. "Life & Death's" Verve-meets-the-Byrds-in-slow- motion vibe is almost maddening at [...]

I know I haven't posted much lately, but I have been dealing with holiday madness as much as you probably have. I just built my new desk in my new office here in Brooklyn so I felt now was a good time to go through some emails, and this was the first thing that I ran across that caught my ear. The Australian, Toby Burke is Horse Stories and he is about to come out with his latest album November, November . The album, which was recorded mostly to tape (as in just [...]
[ download ] If there is truly no rest for the wicked, Toby Burke must be one bad dude. He released his third album under the Horse Stories name four years ago, but the intervening years have kept him ridiculously busy. In this span, Burke has released two collections of short stories, produced a major gallery art installation, done some record production and film scoring, put out two records of instrumental experimental music, and moved from his native Australia to the hip hood of Silverlake in Los Angeles. Oh, yes: he [...]
