Silversun Pickups Carnavas released July 26, 2006 free mp3 of 'Lazy Eye' If the idea of basement tapes made by Billy Corgan and Doug Martsch appeals to you, say hello to your new favorite band. Silversun Pickups are fairly early adopters of the 1990s revival, but they're not grunge dorks or anything, and they're from L.A. [...]

4F :

I was browsing through Other Music and I luckily remembered about a song I had heard on KEXP's "song of the day" podcast. The song was called "The Great Salt Lake" from a band named, Band Of Horses . So I decided to pick up Everything All The Time for my own Xmas gift. The Band Of Horses is a clash of My Morning Jacket and the Stills. Really. Listen to them and you'll hear the pop sensibility of the Stills and the southern rock/reverb sunk vocals of My Morning Jacket. Also, [...]

Patrick Wolf So...2006 is almost over. I think this year was one of those years that just pass quickly, but to be honest, lots of stuff has happened. Notably, I started this blog--right at the beginning of January. So, a year and 288 posts later, I'm sitting here, thinking about where I'm going to take this now. Lots of things are going to happen. Expect many more posts, a new design, and maybe even a new domain next year. How's that for a resolution? [...]

Seattle's Band of Horses turned up at the top of many "Best-Of" lists this year with their full-length debut Everything All The Time (Sub Pop), a jangly, shimmering album that is mandatorily compared to The Shins, My Morning Jacket, and Neil Young in every album review ever written (oh, and Flaming Lips). Yep, you can hear all those influences, but I think they are doing so well because --beyond the comparisons-- they have an eminently fresh & enjoyable sound that is uniquely their own. [...]

I?ve decided to stay in the game for at least a few more months. So, without further ado . . . Here it is, the last of the best of posts, concluding with the best album of the year. 25. The Deadstring Brothers-Starving Winter Report. Last year, when I made a top list of Americana albums, were up near the top. This year, I?m not breaking my list into genres, yet these guys are still making it. Starving Winter Report is full of well-written, well-crafted songs from the heartland. Eat [...]

Welcome to 12 X 12 : The First Annual Some Velvet/I Am Fuel 2006 Year-In-Music Blogger Poll. It's the obviously logical combination of music and accounting. Bruce from Some Velvet Blog rocks all sorts of goodness on a regular basis over on his site and at his radio station . We had so much fun working on our massive Girl Talk post together that we once again decided to pool our creative energies to come up with our first meta-music poll (not to be confused with a Metamucil [...]

Here's where I try to say something about the songs I really liked in 2006. I could talk about skill and technical virtuosity, artistic ambition, ideological good intentions, recording quality, even originality (that obsolete concept). But basically, the list below is made up of songs that meant something to me -- for lots of reasons, often personal ones. Most aren't there simply because they're beautiful or thrilling (though they often are), but because they seized a mood the first (or third or tenth) time I heard them, tied red ribbons around my fingers for the people and places and events [...]

Ah, its December already, where does the year go. I have been thinking about the year gone as the time flies by. I have been working on my favourite full length albums, which i hope to post on in a couple of weeks, but i thought i would write about my 10 favourite songs of the year gone past. I know its an almost impossible task, narrowing it down to ten, let alone omitting all those songs that i haven't heard, but here goes anyway, in no particular order, except the first one- This Sentence [...]

Earlier this year, Seattle's Band of Horses blew my mind with the release of the critically acclaimed "Everything All the Time" and instantly earned a place on my top 10 releases of 2006. Although their sound is not ground-breaking (see My Morning Jacket), the CD is great from start to finish. The short, 36 minute disc spans a range of sounds and emotions. I would recommend this disc to anyone who appreciates good music. The Band of Horses' tour stops in Lawrence, KS this Sunday (September 24) and I know it will slay me. [...]
Just a quick post to remind those of you who live in the Cincinnati area that Band of Horses will be performing tonight at the new Alchemize in Northside. This show marks the grand opening of the venue in its new location. Tickets are still available, but Alchemize & Desdemona Festival main man Nick Spencer advised those hoping to attend to get there early. Come out for what is sure to be a great night! DETAILS: Band of Horses w. Chad VanGaalen & Simon [...]

I'm off to Seattle for about two weeks, and I don't think I'll have much chance to post much between then and now. And I was just getting the hang of it too.. but to make it up to you, here's a bunch of random MP3s and some news from Thunderbirds Are Now! (Get the title of the post, or is it still too weird?) I'm trying to do this quickly so I can go do some late minute packing, but here goes. Seattle Mix Tape! A random mix of mp3s from [...]

Last night I went to the Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle. There was really only one band that my mom and I were there for which was Band of Horses, who were playing alongside Helio Sequence who we regretfully didn't arrive in time for, and Pretty Girls Make Graves, though we left before they hit the stage. Band of Horses took to the stage without any pretense, tuning up their instruments and beginning to play without so much as an announcement that they had taken the stage. Their set seemed [...]
(Photo by gregoryperez ) The sky is falling on my head here in North London. The heavens have opened after what seems months, and the rain has been plummeting for the last couple of hours. Our garden, starved of the rainy goodness it so desperately desires, has been kept up by the sheer willpower of my flatmate, and the fruit and veg are beginning to flow. The heatwave seems to suit the diddy little chilli pepper and the tomatoes seem to be doing very nicely thanks, marking a turnaround in fortunes, for me at least - I've [...]

With 2006 more than half way gone and eager bloggers all over the world compiling their lists of the 'best albums of the year... so far', I thought, rather than go the full way, I'd post a couple of my favorite songs of the year so far. My first choice and winner of the prize for the single song that i have listened to most this year according to my iTunes is 'White Daisy Passing' by Rocky Votolato. A Seattle based singer/songwriter, Rocky Votolato moves in similar [...]
Already the year is flying by. I remember New Years Eve and already it is almost mid-July. Everyone thought this year was going to be slow, but there have been some amazing records released and the second half of the year looks to be following suit. Top 5 (no order): 1) Band of Horses â€" Everything All the Time . This album exploded on the scene and despite all the hype, it is avoiding backlash and the band is selling out shows faster than Dashboard [...]
