by Consequence Of Sound

For every band like Sun Angle, who deftly weave the dichotomous sounds of punk and tropical, there are bands like Hospital Ships . Formerly the bedroom project ofKansas' Jordan Geiger, their incongruous mix of satiny folk-rock and jagged garage rock should, theoretically, flourish. But as Destruction In Yr Soul demonstrates, their balancing act isfar too disjointed to be successful. The LP is composed primarily of harmless songs like "Lost Folk Song". Here, a solid folk core (strummy guitars, sensitive emotional content complete with "ooh and aah" vocals) is embellished with bits of noise. It won't offend [...]

Even when the two essential elements are pitted against hideous arrangements- as is often the case with in many of the otherwise classic hits by the likes of Ray Price and George Jones- the singers and the songs carry the day. Fortunately, the brilliant songs and stellar singing featured on Country Singles , the latest release by Kansas City's The Grisly Hand , are supported by immaculately tasteful playing by the likes of Mike Stover. It's a set of songs fueled with a tumultuous energy - it is Geiger facing his demons and coming out the other side. This desire is steeped not only in the events, but in music as well. It is statistically proven that people are more receptive to new things and ideas in the summer months (full disclosure, I just made that up because it sounds good and correct). Well this Saturday, Milwaukee residents are in luck because they have the opportunity to conquer both desires with one fell swoop, as local music venue/dance club plays host to Kentucky's Hospital Ships.
