Hospitality From: Brooklyn, United States You might be the best band in the world with a set of songs that could change music for ever but if you choose a bad name you may as well resign yourself to mid table obscuirty at best. Just ask Dumpy's Rusty Nuts, Splodgenessabounds and Ned's Atomic Dustbin. Brooklyn trio Hospitality have avoided the name choosing pitfalls by opting for a name that chimes perfectly with [...]

I saw this band in 2009 in the back room of a Bushwick bar with my pal EE. EE remembers: "Early spring 2009, back room of that bar on Bushwick Ave. I remember cold weather, dirty carpeting, and a weird opening band." Now, they've got Maeby in a music video where NY looks like LA and LA like NY. Movin' on up. I post this track with some reservation, as it tends to get painfully stuck in my head and then I have to sing anything I can think of to get it out [...]

Tweet From the bouncy jangle of album starter "Eighth Avenue" , it's immediately clear Brooklyn trio Hospitality have come a long way from 2008's debut six song EP – and not just the kind of growth that's afforded when you stop recording in your apartment and actually enter a studio (although that's sure to have had a positive impact as well). On their debut album, Amber Papini captures the ineffable spark of their EP's best tracks and [...]

As a service term, hospitality represents the welcome, care, and entertainment of guests and strangers. The band, though, gives the term a meaning of its own. Brooklyn band Hospitality is fronted by Kansas City's Amber Papini, whose voice dances in the influence of Artists like Regina Spector, Laura Gibson, and Jesy Fortino. She combines the most exciting points of all three and pairs the delivery with a sturdy backing band that features Brian Betancourt on bass/vocals and the electro-guru-turned-drummer, Nathan Michel. The band has recently put out a self titled album that's received great [...]

[photo courtesy of Maryanne Ventrice ] On nyctaper, we take pride in recognizing the talent and potential of bands long before they hit it big. We have had a nice little track record and the results are archived in five years worth of posts on this site. But we're also perfectly willing to admit when we miss one entirely. Two and a half years ago, I recorded Hospitality at Littlefield but did not post it on nyctaper, because, well, I did not see the band's potential. This week Hospitality [...]

The easy-going opener Eighth Avenue cruises like Belle & Sebastien freewheeling down a sunshine promenade. The warm acoustics fuel the engine while singer Amber Papini has a 60s candy smile the whole way through – talk about friendly introductions, this is good Hospitality. What's better is the band's ability to change gears – from the box of sprightly pop on Friends of Friends , to the more resistant, and highly effective Julie . The latter is seemingly stuck in a rut of downer acoustics and flat-lining keys – changing the forecast once more. The [...]
Up-and-comers Hospitality are like the characters of their songs: accomplished and bright, with room to grow. Living up to its name, Hospitality serves up indie-pop comfort food with a sound that's warm, inviting, and familiar. On its eponymous debut, the up-and-coming Brooklyn band mines those time-tested twee themes of unrequited love and self-doubting ennui with a sweet-and-sour aesthetic that conjures up a pit-of-your-stomach feeling that could either be anxious anticipation or impending doom, whether it's over love, what to do with yourself, or life in general. Considering how well crafted Hospitality...
Most of the new releases for this week dropped on the last day of last month, making January a pretty rad month for new releases after a relatively slow start (which is typical right after the holidays), and a great way to kick-off the 2012 music calendar. Rating: 4 out of 5 stars January has come and gone, and there have been some decent releases of the New Year already, but as for classic indie-pop, this is by far the most playful album yet. You have all the elements that tend to work for indie; the whimsical yet grounded tone, the combination of slow beats that still manage to grab your attention, and of course the fast past and downright fun numbers. Hospitality , a three part, but by no means a small part band, [...]

You can always count on Merge Records to deliver the goods and they did so this week with the debut record from Hospitality , a band that plays the type of Belle & Sebastian-inspired jangly, wistful indie pop that always seems to hit the sweet spot for me. The first track on Hospitality's self-titled debut is "Eighth Avenue" which opens with all the typical twee-signifiers, gently strummed acoustic guitar and airy vocals, but opens up to become a lush, brilliantly realized track with some quick tempo-changes and rowdy guitar noodling among the memorable melodies. Check it out [...]

Hospitality Hospitality Merge Records [2012] Fire Note Says: Brooklyn trio Hospitality offer up a stylish indie pop debut. Album Review: Hospitality are a superbly rich sounding trio out of Brooklyn that just released their debut of sophisticated indie pop on Merge Records. The band is led by the likable Amber Papini that delivers her focused lyrics with a wisp of an English accent via Kansas City as [...]
