Rick Froberg has done it again, but it's no surprise. He's been doing it consistently since the mid-eighties, and there's really no sign of him stopping. He's fronted influential groups such as Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes, but why that hasn't made Froberg a household name, I don't know. Obits are Frober's latest band, and they're a hard rock quartet from NYC that really know's how to make a first impression. They've got a psychosis-inducing post-hardcore pulsation, and it's nice to hear Froberg still brings his forceful vocals to the table. There's something in the music [...]

Obits - Widow Of My Dreams Obits - Two-Headed Coin OK, firstly, this wasn't necessarily in the bag for me. Just because it's Rick Froberg's new band and he's previously been in two of my most favourite bands of all time ever, doesn't mean they couldn't suck. John Reis' Night Marchers did. Happily, friends, this shit is so fucking RIGHT it's like John McCain twirling around on the spot forever. One thing that was great about [...]

Apparently the Obits were in town strategicating with their label about the upcoming release of their debut long player due on 24 March on Sub Pop. They must have been really itching to play because they took over a half-constructed restaurant dubbed Fen's Party Palace in the ID and threw what to amounted to a big house party. There was no cover, no stage, no bar (bring your own beverage), a single dangling light bulb for light and a fiery, take no prisoners set from the band. Fen's was very full, especially considering the [...]

For those of you who do not live in San Diego, here is a brief history of the Street Scene music festival. The event started in 1984 as a semi-annual end of summer music celebration. Initially there were only two stages set up on opposite ends of a single block festival area in the Gaslamp district of downtown San Diego. By 1988 the festival had grown to five stages and had become an annual occurrence on the San Diego calendar. 1990 was the first year to host both Friday and Saturday band line-ups, and by 1995 a Sunday "All Ages" [...]

Lethargy, work, kids, wives, contributors, life... All have lead to this hiatus. That being said how do you pack up for the fall of New York? Whew! 11 more years before "fake" Pliskins' start coming to save themselves and the world. Song: Brainstorm Artist: Hot Snakes Album: Peel Sessions Comments: Sure, a little more primal and capturing the live sound of the band. Still to the average band fan this stull is filler. Song: Mr. Pitiful Artist: The Commitments Album: OMPST - The Commitments [...]

Sohrab Habibion of Obits (ex - Pitchfork , Drive Like Jehu , Hot Snakes ) talks some history: I come from the DC hardcore scene, and there are so many great bands, and I learned a lot about music and how musicmaking can be a very beneficial social and socially activist thing. And yet there were a lot of unspoken rules, and I'm glad to have nothing to do with that anymore . After a lengthy show review [...]

The boys in Brain Banger know how to bring the Hot Snakes / Drive Like Jehu -inspired insanity. Louisville natives, these dudes are adept in face-melting. The band is currently on a short run with Boston's Disappearer through the Midwest. If you have an opportunity to see the tour, don't waste it.

hey there. good morning. thought you could use some rock n roll this sunday... strangely enough, this is from the last session John Peel ever recorded.. hot snakes - no hands (peel session)
This is simply a number of songs that I either listened to plenty while working on this blog and or my own plans in the past year wondering why the powers that be couldn't get their heads out of their collective asses and embrace some change. Consider it this week's more music mondays post! The Pink Mountaintops [...]
Yikes, a bit of a lull here. Sorry about that. I've been super busy in LA for the last week and a half, but I'm now safely ensconced at a friend's house in Berkeley, here to spend a few days relaxing, sampling the local cuisine, visiting relatives and generally having a fun time. So I should get back to updating on my usual (semi) regular basis. But before I do that, let me just say that I detest LAX. It's a terrible, awful place in a terrible, awful city. LAX [...]

As anyone who was a fan will tell you, Rocket From The Crypt and Drive Like Jehu frontman John Reis, aka Speedo, has been one of the best frontmen in rock for the last few decades. His post Rocket band, Hot Snakes, were another fantastic blend of rock and roll and post-punk cleverness, and produced four really great records from 2000 to 2005. As he has recently announced his plans to return with a new band named (shockingly) Speedo, and featuring two members of...Hot Snakes, I thought it would be a good idea to post this Peel session, which is [...]

Featuring members of Pitchfork, the band not the website, Drive like Jehu, Rocket from the Crypt and thepunkguy favorites, Tanner, Hot Snakes play pretty straight forward punk influenced Rock n' Roll. Suicide Invoice was their second record and, in my opinion, where they really found the right formula to what made this band great. Check out three songs below and then go and buy it... Hot Snakes - XOX Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice Hot Snakes - I [...]
They may be no more, but the HOT SNAKES will always have a place in our post-punk hearts. A reminder here that theres still plenty for all ...

Hot Snakes' Suicide Invoice is one of my favorite albums. In my music collection, I've got representatives from every genre, but a sound that's sorely lacking is rock. Not classic rock, not psych rock, not rock n' roll, but just rock. It's so hard to find a good band these days that just rocks. Fortunately the Hot Snakes were ready for that complaint. However, as good as that album was, I couldn't get into their next, Audit In Progress . I thought they sped it up too much, didn't [...]
congratulations are in order for my man rich at cable and tweed for snatching up the readers choice for best local music blog in atlanta's creative loafing . way to go rich! fucker! hopefully he can pull himself away from them damn learning books to start posting again at least on a semi regular basis. at this point in the day i am sure you guys have taken a gander at the hot carl/filthy sanchez that was unleashed by screech powers in his porno debut - via stereogum . lets all pray [...]

Live albums tend to represent a band's energy very well and this one is no different. Hot Snakes have already called it quits but a new live album, Thunder Down Under has been released. After being formed in 1999 by John Reis and Rick Froberg, the band called it quits last year, through a handwritten letter on their official web site. Thunder Down Under delivers several examples of their energetic live performances, citing several of their best songs. It does not run like a greatest hits record though, with a few less popular songs [...]
