By Andrew Martin When you think of a producer sampling a sound, what's the first image that comes to mind? Someone digging through crates to find the right piece of dusty vinyl? Well, not New York City's Nick Koenig, aka Hot Sugar . He'd rather crack a human skull or record the thump of a rat's heartbeat—no joke—to flesh out the melody of his new recording. While that might lead you to believe his music is difficult to digest, that couldn't be further from the truth. Just because Koenig favors [...]
Another day, another stream of a track off Hot Sugar's soon-coming new EP, Moon Money . This time around it's the impeccably titled "There's a Man Waiting at the Bottom of the Stairs". It sounds almost exactly how you would expect with a name like that, what with the superbly creep sounds that slink in at the 1:17 mark. From there on out, you might find yourself looking over your shoulder for the remainder of "There's a Man...". It's that haunting.
The release of Hot Sugar 's new opus, Moon Money , is nearly here. The EP drops May 14 and, believe you me, it is a stunner . But the thing is, it's not quite as bright or shimmering as his previous work . The New York City-based musician went in a different direction with this project, infusing much darker sounds and associative music into its nine tracks. That's evident here on new single "0__03, though it still retains some of the playful attitude we've come to expect from Hot Sugar. Stream the track below. [ via [...]
My first knowledgeable encounte r with singer, instrumentalist and self-proclaimed idea-dude, Aaron Earl Livingston came after listening to Hot Sugar 's "Cold Wars" (conveniently posted below) from Sugar's Muscle Milk EP. I had previously heard Livingston's distinct vocals featured on several of The Roots ' records (e.g. "Guns Are Drawn" and the more recent track " Sleep " ), however I wasn't aware who I was actually listening to until stumbling on his feature on "Cold Wars" and connecting the dots. Talk about an aha moment. Now that I've put both a face and name to his voice I can confidently share [...]

Queens-based rapper/producer Big Baby Gandhi continues to steal the hearts of hip-hop lovers with his newly released video for NO1 2 LOOK UP 2 's "Been A Villain". It features appearances from close buddies and collaborators Himanshu , of Das Racist, and Hot Sugar , who produced the track. Don't expect anything particularly flashy or over the top here, just simplistic, albeit engaging, visuals from the more-contemplative-than-you-pr obably-realize artist. Peep the video below.
New York producer Hot Sugar put together what can only be called an absolutely epic mix for Ninja Tune's Solid Steel Radio Show. The genre-hopping mix blends tracks from his own discography - including his upcoming Moon Money EP - with tunes from the likes of J-Zone, Big Baby Gandhi, Cheap Trick(!?), and Danzig(!). If that reads crazy, that's because it is. But hey, we wouldn't have it any other way. And neither would Hot Sugar. Stream/download the mix below.

Download: Open Mike Eagle- Rent Party Extension Los Angeles-based rapper Open Mike Eagle recently dropped a five-track EP that, like many of the best things in life, is free. Titled Rent Party Extension , the EP brings in a handful of features, including Milo, who put out the Loved Listed I Wish My Brother Rob Was Here last year, and Roots collaborator Hot Sugar . The release serves as an appetizer for the full-length that the MC is supposedly putting out [...]

Rent Party Revolution (Taco Neck Remix) Rent Party Revolution is a song I wrote about and for all the folks I know with hyperactive minds that live in a world that isnt designed to inspire their potential. Its my story of growing up a "smart kid" and being led to believe that that [...]

Big Baby Gandhi is an artist who's been getting a decent amount of coverage here at Cit. I expected his newly announced Mixtape, NO1 2 Look Up 2 , to be impressive, what I wasn't expecting was the record be quite possibly my favourite record of the year so far. Articulate, witty, socially conscious, funny, emotionally engrossing and dramatically demanding; the LP sounds like a slice of Queens that most aren't likely to know exists. It's also fantastically produced, with spots from Hot Sugar and Gandhi [...]

When it comes to writing for CITR it's been a quiet month for me. That's not to say I haven't been working though, the vast majority of my efforts have been focused on a CITR project that's both exciting and a bold step forward for the site; yet unfortunately something I can't talk to much about yet. This track has been soundtrack to my new project, the Hot Sugar produced new tune from Big Baby Gandhi . It's no surprise the cut is highly reminiscent of [...]

BIG BABY! is back again, Heems said he had the best tape of the year, if you didn't know, you weren't listening; something along those lines. I'm inclined to agree, it was definitely awesome. Check the post on Big Fucking Baby @Pushinghoops did a great job with that one. Before I talk about this jam, I wanna make sure yall didn't miss the unreleased joint Nafas tweeted the other day. (or jump to his blog , it's on page 2, tracklist to the new tape is up on page [...]
Although we have been out of commission the past two weeks, we have been steadily following the lead up to The Roots upcoming concept album, undun . Enlisting Hot Sugar on production, who Andrew hipped us to not long ago, "Sleep" is a continuation of the dark minimalist sound that the Legendary has been playing with as of late. Aaron Livingston's vocals elevate the track even more, a positive progression from the mediocrity of Dice Raw. Am I the only one that feels this way? Anyway, undun is due Dec. 6. Hit the [...]

So I've mentioned before our boy Hot Sugar , and that he was working on the new album from The Roots . Well they've been posting tracks one by one in video form for a while, but it was the album opener I was waiting for - Sleep . Hot Sugar has masterfully produced this track to classy effect. It's moody, dark, and lo-fi - not particularly things you'd usually associate with The Roots , but they've really been trying hard to top the bar they set for themselves in '02 with [...]
New video off The Root's undun , "Sleep" featuring Aaron Livingston and produced by Hot Sugar. Video Directed, Shot & Edited by Clifton Bell for http://www.ghettonerd.com undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford's internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out 'on the corner'. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented–postmortem–and attempting to make sense of his former [...]
