This is Hot Tuna live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, USA, on the 4th March 1988. Hot Tuna are an American blues-rock band formed originally by bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen as a spin-off of Jefferson Airplane. They are renowned for playing acoustic and electric versions of original and traditional blues songs. There is a strong likelihood that this concert that bought Paul Kantner and Grace Slick back on the stage together helped the Jefferson Airplane reunion tour and record in 1989 to come about. Regarding this [...]

Thanks in part to the H.O.R.D.E. Tour the mid to late '90s could easily be looked at as the golden age of jambands, with regional bands turning into national touring acts thanks to an open-minded and enthusiastic fan base that where eager to discover the next big thing. Among the crop of bands that sprang up during this boom was The Big Wu , who formed at St. Olaf College in 1992 and earned a fervent following around the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The Minnesota-based act , who hold the distinction of being the first band on at [...]
And just like that, the live music scene in NYC picks up again, with a lot of great shows kicking off this week.
McClatchy Newspapers (MCT) -- LEXINGTON, Ky. - Few artistic alliances have weathered the years with more durable credibility than the one Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady have forged for more than half a century. During the mid- to late 1960s, the guitarist/bassist team formed the backbone of Jefferson Airplane, piloting the lauded West Coast band through its most extreme psychedelic jams and its earthiest folk-blues grooves. Both are Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees for their adventures. But...

Right outta the woods, The Pines' live rendition of What Good Am I? brings the peculiar comfort of Dylan's words 'n' vocals. John Gorka coaxes every melodic nuance from Just Like A Woman . Meg Hutchinson's gorgeous arrangement of Born In Time improves on the original. Mama, Let Me Lay It On You (Baby, Let Me Follow You Down) transmitter Hot Tuna gives everything the Hot Tuna treatment. It's Dylan in a parallel universe: The artfully placed tracks of A Nod to Bob 2 don't impersonate the [...]

Back in 1969, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassidy originally started Hot Tuna as a side project to play some live dates during Jefferson Airplane's hiatus, as Grace Slick recovered from throat surgery. The band , who mixed acoustic and electric rock and blues, quickly morphed into a full time outfit and have now been at it for over 40 years - with Jorma and Jack being the constants for a rotating cast of band members. On April 5, Hot Tuna will release Steady As She Goes , their first studio album of all new [...]

Biologists have recently stumbled upon an enormous beaver dam, over a half mile long, in a remote region of Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, Canada. The biologists believe it may have taken 20 years to complete, with several beaver families all helping to pile its wood, mud, and stone. It dwarfs a 1,956 foot dam in Montana previously thought to be the largest. The dam was able to reach such a massive size because multiple beaver families contributed to its construction, which required thousands of trees to produce. More info [...]
After a handful of high profile warm up shows, which included a number of SXSW appearances, James Mercer (The Shins) and Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) will take their new project Broken Bells on its first ever national tour. The band, whose self-titled album debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts and peaked at #1 on iTunes, will kick off their 16-date North American club tour on May 18 in San Diego with indie-buzz band The Morning Benders providing support over the course of the run. As I've noted several times before, I'm not big on year-end omnibus posts, and the concept of countdowns, with their hierarchies and exclusionary undertones, challenges my generous sensibilities. There's so much greatness out there, the perfect song and songsmith for every one of a thousand nuanced moods and whims; to choose one over the other would be as wrong as asking me to rank my students by favorite, thus neglecting the dormant potential, the unique potency, and the epiphanic moments inherent in each. But it's been a rich year here at Cover Lay [...]

Hot Tuna: Jorma Kaukonen (left) and Jack Casady (right) I've been lucky enough to have seen the legendary guitarist /songwriter Jorma Kaukonen perform solo on a number of occasions over the years and I last saw Hot Tuna live (with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin at the time) back in 2006 at Merlefest. All of those live shows which I've seen to this point were presented in an acoustic setting, more in line with Hot Tuna's earliest performances and with Kaukonen's solo [...]
