"Yubiwa" is the Japanese DIY-recording scene's equivalent of The Avengers , a long-awaited meeting of some of the most popular bedroom-based projects in the country today. This song brings together the shadowy Jesse Ruins (signed to Captured Tracks), swirling-pop maker Sapphire Slows (Not Not Fun) and the hazy rock of Hotel Mexico (Double Denim). Despite having connections with Western labels, "Yubiwa"arrives as a limited-run cassette and digital download, with all profits going towards victims of last year's Tohoku earthquake. Each contributin g artist manages to standout sonically over "Yubiwa's" nearly six-minute playtime, but no single one dominates the song, with [...]

With a release of the remastered My Bloody Valentine catalogue on the horizon, one suspects there will be yet another mini-explosion of noisy-but-fey guitar bands towards the end of the year. Getting in before the rush, Hotel Mexico have built their sound on a firm foundation of Shields-esque fuzz-pop - but, as 'Wolves Running Through The Desert' demonstrates, the Kyoto band's reference points stretch further than Loveless . The b-side to their current Double Denim-released 73 ends up more Wakeman-infused sci-fi score than [...]
Hotel Mexico is a band from Kyoto, Japan. Their brand of washed out guitar jams on debut EP His Jewelled Letter Box caught the eyes + ears of various tastemakers . This April, Double Denim Records is... **Summary** Go to website for downloads, videos & more.

I can't think of a more perfect song to listen to right after we've sprung forward. Suddenly the days are longer and little pieces of ethereal pop like this just help keep the mood going. I hate winter so much that when the seasons change it feels like a personal victory, and Hotel Mexico are just helping to rub the success in. It's a muffled, hazy track with some real beauty to it that makes it hard to take off repeat and the shimmering guitars add just enough weight to keep the singer's falsetto grounded. Hotel Mexico, contrary to the [...]

Caray!

You might be aware that we dig pretty much everything that has emerged from the Japanese underground as of late, and you might also remember that we were in particular raving about Hotel Mexico 's late summer bliss "Dear Les Friends" . The wonderful folks over at London's Double Denim Records just announced two new songs by the Kyoto outfit, released on 7 inch vinyl and now available for order right here , once again proving impeccable taste with which is now already the second Japanese band to be featured on the label, after last [...]

The Emil & Friends tune "Downed Economy" is off last year's EP of the same name and has thus been flowing around for a good while now already, but as far as I can see this amazing Hotel Mexico remix is something brand new. So I don't know the particular occasion for this re-work, but in any case our favorite Tokyo-based lo-fi dance quintet has turned the track into a wonderfully lush, laid-back AM pop slow-burner, and I guess that alone should be reason enough. Emil & Friends - Downed Economy (Hotel [...]

Happy Fourth everyone. For today, I thought I'd offer something a little different; a free mixtape (haven't done that in a while). The songs don't have any particular Fourth of July tinge or any super-American inflection behind them. They're just a bunch of songs that fit particularly well for summer 2011. You can check out the tracklist and grab the download below. So, enjoy. 1. Surprise Hotel - Fool's Gold 2. Vibrationz - Javelin [...]

Tweet The world is getting smaller thanks to the internet, and I for one think that's pretty rad. How else would I discover this nugget of retro-pop from Hotel Mexico, a six-piece ensemble all the way from Kyoto, Japan? Their track 'Dear Les Friends' has a lo-fi aesthetic similar to Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, without being weird for just for weirdness sake. With a machine-gun drum roll, Hotel Mexico dives right in to the jam. Underneath the understated strum of guitar, the bass brings the funk with the [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Toro y Moi, Passion Pit, Volcano! "Hotel Mexico - Dear Les Friends" What's so good? It's only a matter of time before Japan's music scene opens the floodgates on the indie rock scene. With songs such as Hotel Mexico's "Dear Les Friends," I'm all for bringing on the rising tide. While the song itself may [...]
