HOTHOUSE FLOWERS

HOTHOUSE FLOWERS So, it seems long about 2 years ago I did a little post on Ireland's Hothouse Flowers. In that particular post, I mention that I would be putting up some of the many b-sides and things from the era of their third album, Songs From The Rain , a bit later on. Well, I guess this is a bit later on. As I mentioned in that post, I was a big big fan of HHF back in the late eighties / early nineties. I had the [...]

Cinema Sounds: The Commitments Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Cinema Sounds: The Commitments Original Motion Picture Soundtrack The transition from novel to cinema is quite a tricky one. While some argue that "the book is forever better than the movie," certain exceptions have been made. The most famous cases that can be argued in defense of their cinematic counterparts include Steven Spielberg's 1975 thriller Jaws (written by Peter Benchley) and Francis Ford Coppola's crime 1973-74 masterpieces The Godfather trilogy (based on the novel by Mario Puzo). With that being said however, the brilliant Irish author Roddy Doyle's Barrytown trilogy is another dazzling series of stories that at first seem incredibly [...]

Monday Under The Covers: The Devlins

Monday Under The Covers: The Devlins Along with Duke Special's version of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 'Maps' song I'd have to put The Devlin's version of 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man' as being my favourite cover version by an Irish artist. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man The good I have heard recently that 'The Devlin's' as an entity is finished. Colin Devlin released a great album back in January called 'The Democracy of One' and has not ruled out a future album being released by 'The Devlins'. Catch [...]

Peadar King - The Nature of Flaws [Album Review]

Peadar King - The Nature of Flaws [Album Review] Recently I was listening to a recently purchased Irish artist compilation album in the car when I heard 'Wanted Something'. You know the moment you hear a song that is near perfection at that moment in time? 'Wanted Something' was that song for me and led me to seek out it's creator; Peadar King. 'The Nature of Flaws' is the debut album by Peadar King released last July. I am reviewing this album here now because I have this hunger to tell [...]

Something For The Weekend - Sean Needham

Something For The Weekend - Sean Needham This week it's the turn of Denmark resident Sean Needham who released a pretty impressive debut in 2004. His website states: "With a music style that has been compared to Ben Harper and Paul Weller, Seán released his debut album entitled Loosely Based On A True Story in Ireland in April 2004. Since then Sean has been bringing his blend of upbeat acoustic rock to audiences across the country. Seán has scored innumerable tour support slots with major artists. Tracy Chapman asked Seán to open for her in Belfast. Following his performance that night, she [...]

Sunday's Seven Degrees of the Grand Slam 2009

Sunday's Seven Degrees of the Grand Slam 2009 What a match to give Ireland the Grand Slam in Rugby. I'm tempted to say it was the most exhilerating two hours of my life! In honour of the great win I give you this report and these sample mp3s! Ireland had beaten France, Italy, England and Scotland before the match yesterday. This set up a winner takes all match with Wales where we would win the Grand Slam [unbeaten in 6 nations] if we managed to beat the Welsh in Wales. Extraordinary by Brendan O'Shea [...]

kiss me, i'm irish!

kiss me, i'm irish! When it comes to St. Patrick's Day, I like to put together a mix that's not just relevant to the celebration, but something one can listen to all year long. On that note, here's this year's mix, music from Ireland's best Pop bands of the last quarter century. Hopefully, you'll enjoy it more than the hangover you're going to suffer through the following day. Them: Here Comes The Night ( wiki ) Thin Lizzy: Bad Reputation ( wiki ) The Undertones: [...]

Maybe It's Time To Cross Ireland Off "Places I'd Like To Live" [Bad Idea Jeans]

Maybe It's Time To Cross Ireland Off "Places I'd Like To Live" [Bad Idea Jeans] I can certainly understand why IRMA (the Irish Recorded Music Association—basically the Irish version of the RIAA) might frown on sites like The Pirate Bay , but is it really fair for a country's record industry to demand that any site that has a link to a torrent of the entire Hothouse Flowers catalog be inaccessible to that country's Internet userbase? Just like here in the States, the recording industry of Ireland is trying to walk a fine balance between antipiracy efforts that the public will tolerate and its innate [...]

Irish Bands on YouTube - The Devlins

Irish Bands on YouTube - The Devlins I adore The Devlins. The Devlins should have been massive. On Tuesday I seen Colin Devlin live in the un-christmasy Whelans upstairs room. Colin was excellent and the debut album A Democracy Of One is full of wonderful tunes. He was joined onstage by his brother Peter and Fiachna O'Braonain from the bands Hothouse Flowers and Prenup. The three played most of Colin's debut as well as Waiting, Drift, World Outside and There Will Be A Light from the The Devlins. More is promised in February. www.myspace.com/colindevlinmus ic The Devlins - I Knew [...]
