When I first started doing the obligatory year end list a couple of years ago, I made a decision to limit it to my favorite five albums from the previous twelve months. It was partly because I like the aesthetics of a top five, but mostly it was to keep the focus on albums that I really, truly loved. Like most music geeks, I listen to a lot of music during the course of a year, and while I may really like a lot of them, there are only a few albums that I truly connect with. That [...]

Nashville's Hotpipes venture out to Tennessee and KY for a nice jaunt and to play some shows, too. Think irresistible keys and electronic effects with classic pop and a tiny southern drawl for effect. Not Kings of Leon, but Birds of Avalon. More excitable than typical indie pop and better than most hard rock drivel. Cheer for "The Future is Where We Belong" for its rollicking chorus and the nastier "Future Bolt." Vid of "The Future is Where We Belong" after the dates. May 28 Chattanooga JJ's [...]

We saw the Hotpipes at the Pour Haus last year with The Photographic and they put on a great show . The Hotpipes are from Nashville and are still promoting their 2008 album, Future Bolt . Hotpipes play a great dance-rock style that's hard to put a finger on (perhaps with a Nashville twist). Cincy's The Lion Rampant and Louisville's The Ladybirds will open. The show starts at 10pm and will cost $5 bucks. Hotpipes- Future Bolt

#20. French Kicks - " Love in the Ruins " This is where my rules start to get me - it was nearly impossible to choose one song off of the new French Kicks album, Swimming , to be included in this countdown. But if I had to pick one favorite, I guess it has to be "Love in the Ruins," because I love the bass line and the chorus momentarily hypnotizes me every single time. It also does a fantastic job capturing the whole aquatic, underwater sound that's so prevalent throughout [...]

photo from chariche Believe me, it would be impossible for you not to feel elated with this unconventional blend of music and melody. Like Ebony and Ivory , this list is at its antipodean. Thursday feels like the real first day of the festival, which is no surprise really, considering the fact that there are fifteen different showcases for you to choose from, or hop in between. Yes, FIFTEEN. It's enough to make your head spin, which is one of the main reasons I decided to do these showcase-by-showcase preview posts in the first place. This is going to be a night of tough decisions no matter what your tastes in music veer towards - you've got several different brands of rock and singer-songwriter stuff to choose from. [...]

Fuck me, I'm glad that's over with. Did you find that as dull as I did? Four consecutive posts about major bands on major labels that you could all just as easily have read about in Q Magazine. I even liked the Elbow and REM albums, but I still felt slightly dirty [...]

Hotpipes - Future Bolt Some albums are just made for this time of the year, and Hotpipes new CD ranks up there among the best spring albums I've ever heard. It's the perfect soundtrack for rolling down the windows on a sunny day and driving around with the car stereo turned up just a little bit louder than is probably healthy. Clocking in at a succinct 29 minutes, its eight songs alternate seemlessly between guitar driven power pop and keyboard fueled rave ups. I've already [...]

The Hotpipes should be pissed that people (like me) are just finding out about them. They're good, they have range, and the vocals are also remarkable 1 . Give them a listen and know that they probably aren't pissed.
