Photo by Tyler Zoller Houndmouth is a bluesy folk-rock band hailing from Indiana, and they're stirring up quite a buzz this year. For starters, they're XPN's Artist to Watch for the Month of June. From the Hills Below the City, Houndmouth's debut album, was released on June 4, and the band performed their track "On the Road" on Conan this week as well. It's a cheery, smile-inducing tune with a hint of country twang that you can check out below. They've embarked on a U.S. tour this summer, hitting [...]

Among the spontaneous, opinionated chatter that records induce in those charged to write about them, it's nice to think that, once in a while, we might give the odd music buyer an objective heads-up as to what they're getting with an album. Never has that felt easier than it is with Houndmouth 's debut, From The Hills Below The City . It's as simple as this: if you're a fan of country-rock, Americana or even a bit of folk now and again, give it a try. If you're not, it's likely that you're going to [...]

Out now is Houndmouth's debut album, From The Hills Below The City, and goodness is it absolutely fantastic.I'll just get this out of the way and say they'll make anyone happy who has enjoyed The Alabama Shakes – I feel like Houndmouth is a little more country and The Shakes are a little more soul – but who says you can't enjoy both. I will absolutely be wearing this album out this summer, I can't get enough of the wailing organs, bouncy guitar riffs, and just that laid back attitude they carry through the whole thing. [...]

By Dominic Allen June 06, 2013 Probably the only great surprise with Houndmouth 's debut album, From The Hills Below The City is that it has been released on indie vanguard label Rough Trade , and not on a more congruent label, like alt-country stalwarts Bloodshot records . That said they would not be getting the same hype in the UK if they had been on the latter label. Seemingly Rough Trade doing a country album is the musical equivalent of Jon Daly signing for [...]

On their dreamy fifth album, Scottish band Camera Obscura adds a local flavor by recording with Portland based producer (and former Seattleite) Tucker Martine. Our Music Director, Don Yates, calls Desire Lines "a beautifully crafted set of bittersweet, soul-tinged indie-pop, featuring a warm, lush sound with guitars, synths, horns, organ and other instrumentation accompanying Tracyanne Campbell’s emotive vocals." It's easily this week's most recommended new release, but there's much more great new music in record stores today from artists like Portland-via-Alaska, oddly punctuated band Portugal. The Man , whose latest, Danger Mouse produced album is [...]

The 1st incredible chapter of Houndmouth 's journey will close tomorrow when they finally release their debut album From The Hills Below The City on Rough Trade . The album is being streamed on Team Coco right now, ahead of their Wednesday night appearance on the show. Be sure to stream the album here and purchase it from the band. They're great guys and deserve every bit of this success. Below is the video for "On The Road" if you have yet to see it:
The Kinks' Dave Davies plugs back in for a sizzling new studio effort, as he continues the long road back from some debilitating health issues. Meanwhile, John Oates continues his intriguing Good Road to Follow solo project. George Benson pays loving, if not always necessarily compelling, tribute to vocal stylings of Nat King Cole. Elsewhere on the jazz scene, we're [...]
This isn't about singles, isn't about a moment in time - a passing thought. No, Houndmouth's From the Hills Below the City is an experience, expressed through the currency of relationships not encounters, constructed as a narrative. Comparisons, inevitably, run toward the music of the Band, which staked out a stirring sense of continuity despite arriving amidst a youth-obsessed late-1960s [...]
After seeing Houndmouth earlier this month at Cosmic Charlie's, I'm incredibly excited to grab their full length debut when it hits stores June 4. Luckily I don't have to wait until then to hear all of it; it's streaming now at Conan O'Brien's website Team Coco. Go check out one of the greatest new rock [...]

In what seems like has been forever in the making, Kentuckiana recession rockers Houndmouth will be releasing their full-length debut, From The Hills Below The City , next week via Rough Trade . We have already heard the cut "On The Road" (see video below), now listen to the album in its entirety a week in advance over at the Team Coco site . If you were in the middle on the band, the release should more than confirm they are more than worthy of [...]
When Houndmouth rolled through Lexington a couple weeks ago they did this amazing John Prine/Jerry Jeff Walker one-two cover combo. I happened to remember it today and was lucky enough to find a great recording of it on youtube. This makes me look forward to both the next time I can see them live and [...]

This week The AV Club put their latest season of their always fantastic Undercover series on hold to offer up a couple of tunes about a topic near and dear to many of us around HT HQ - baseball. For this special off-shoot bands where allowed to independently pick the song of their choice relating to America's pastime. Singer-songwriter Basia Bulat went with the more obvious selection of Bruce Springsteen's Glory Days , delivering a stunning rendition that would have you convinced it was originally recorded [...]

Late spring is such a raw and wet time of digging out from under the ice and (maybe) melting snow (not this week though, in Colorado). There is something about the world that seems undressed, on the verge of new, and full of promise. It is as if all of nature around me is living that wonderful Ryan Adams lyric " precious little thing / with eyes that dance around without their clothes ." I know this is late-ish, but I'm gonna call April a wash and declare it not too late to salvage this spring. Some [...]
Justin Paul Lewis Lately there's been a lot of Louisville/Lexington bleed-over and I couldn't be happier. Bands from the two cities are pairing up for shows in each other's towns, collaborating on albums or doing mini-showcases of their city's skill. While there wasn't any sort of official "Louisville comes to Lexington" billing about this weekend's [...]

John Wright The last time that Pet Shop Boys were in town, it was for V Fest 2009 and while I was excited for their performance, it was more because I wanted to see their audience intersect with the Nine Inch Nails fans who were there to see Trent and company, who were playing immediately afterwards, than out of any real sort of fandom. Their show, however, blew me away with its technicolour visuals, elaborate choreography, and top-notch pop songcraft that they were easily the highlight of the weekend and, having since gotten to [...]
I saw Houndmouth put on a great show this weekend at Cosmic. While on stage, they mentioned that they released a video for "On the Road" the day prior. Well, I forgot about that offhand comment until I saw that they covered Wilco & Billy Bragg for the AV Club. So get your Houndmouth on [...]
