Our latest installment of Substitute Teachers comes from Grinel, one half of the Brighton-based label Donky Pitch . They've been responsible for some top releases this year (including a couple that have shown up in our monthly mix series ), and I was also given the opportunity to shoot Grinel a few questions about their work. When did you start Donky Pitch ? Was there a particular artist/track that got you started? I first started thinking about the club night in December 2008. I'd been to visit [...]

First new Hourglass Sea of 2012, and it has been worth the wait. Bradford's prodigal son comes back with a two track single - one original, one him remixing, and it is everything that we've come to demand from a man who seems to be without peer, very possibly in a literal sense. Brilliantly tagged as 'popstep', Hourglass does his usual samples and guitar thing to make tracks both giddily neon and recklessly ambitious. Sample for yourself below.

Bleeding Knees Club 1st January A duo make up of two dudes from Australia's Gold Coast, the songs they make are unmistakably brash, but in a playful way, like a hateful puppy http://thepigeonpost.wordpress .com/2011/01/01/bleeding-knees -club/ Hourglass Sea January 4th The work of Dean Bentley, this is a project that sounds like Solar Bears being played on the wrong speed setting, a hyperactive mass of noise that doesn't quite seem certain where it's going. http://thepigeonpost.wordpress .com/2011/01/04/hourglass-sea/ [...]

Bradford based beatmaker Hourglass Sea is back, returning his time with double-a-side single Dream Warrior / La Concorde. It's as you were from Hourglass Sea but no less impressive, dropping a silky mix of sweet synths and slick hip-hop beats, which gives off an overwhelmingly futuristic feel. Why tinker with something that works so well? and these insanely sweet synth filled jams do [...]
I've been loving some insanely sweet and thick melting synth jams that Hourglass Sea just emailed me the other day. "Dream Warrior" and "La Concorde" are part of the... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

Matthew Britton is our human blog-music aggregator, kind of like Hype Machine but with feelings and shit. Every week he goes, puts on his rubber gloves and trawls the darkest sewers of Soundcloud , reporting back to TLOBF with his findings. Sometimes he strikes gold, sometimes just faeces, but one day, maybe, just maybe, a band covered here will play an actual gig in front of human people. We continue to live in hope. Whether it's been made official or not before, Autumn is the time of year that hipsters most enjoy. Summer [...]

Hourglass Sea is from Bradford, England. He released his debut (free) single via soundcloud last month titled 'L.A Lights'. Check it out below. L.A Lights by Hourglass Sea
I introduced Bradford based beatmaker Hourglass Sea (aka Dean Bentley) earlier in the year. Since then he has been putting the finishing touches to his forthcoming EP, Purple Diamond. The EP will be with us very soon. For now we have the title track and a new video for 'L.A Lights', directed by Jack King and shot in Bradford, to get [...]
A little ways back I featured the track "LA Lights" by Britain's Hourglass Sea on a Sunday Hi-5. Epic cinematic electronic awesomeness. So naturally the video would be just as... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

I have a bit of Hourglass Sea news for ya candy ass. I am happy to report that he is set to release a new EP titled Purple Diamond on July 25th. Here is the single, which just so happens to be the title track. Very good indeed. Purple Diamond by Hourglass Sea Also, the track L.A. Lights [...]
I've written enough about my love for Bradford's Hourglass Sea. Completely unlike any of his peers. he makes tracks that combine elements others wouldn't even dream of including to make a chaotic, brilliant mess that stays just coherent enough for you to fall in love with it. He's had a video made for his track L.A. Lights, directed by Jack King, and it's as puzzling as the music that soundtracks it. He's released the first track from his new E.P. too, which is similarly excellent:
Click here to view the embedded video. Dean Bentley lives next to a cemetery. A lot of people might have used that as an excuse to make dull, vaguely ghostly music and bleat on about atmosphere, ambience and the vibes of being around such a place. With Dean, you only really know if you've ever spent time around his Lidget Green home – which you certainly will have done if you spent the early years of your life attending the school next to the graveyard. But rather than looking around at his [...]

Umm. Yes, we do have (another) Adele remix. And it's a pretty good one, to be honest! Hourglass Sea is possibly the best thing to have come out of Bradford. I know that expression is usually followed by a since ... but I didn't really think there was a since . He has remixed/remade the superb pop song into something that you can imagine being played by a synthy, rocky band with a drummer on angry drugs in the background. You should really turn this one up very loud. And if you like it then you can see [...]
