Its strange. It feels like just a couple weeks ago that I was dodging the rain and jamming to some De La Soul at Forecastle 2007. But apparently its been almost 6 months. I must be in some kind of time warp. To mark the halfway point until Forecastle 2008 J.K. McKnight has put together a benefit concert to supports local BMX legend Jimmy Levan. Here are all the details from jk: "I'm proud to announce that Band of [...]
How I Became the Bomb may suck past their demo- you never can tell, right? The vocal delivery is a lot like Of Montreal, but not as dripping with over-dramatics. Their music is sort of like Of Montreal, but less bothersome. I enjoy Of Montreal for the most part, but I can understand how someone could hate them. How I Became the Bomb has a lot of syth/keys to them, but they have nice bass and drums to fill things out. Their pop vibe is down pact, and if they can avoid the Of Montreal comparisons (woops) and the whole [...]
Today is my big sister's 28th birthday. Those of you who know me I'm sure also know Becky - she's my roommate, best friend, and plus one at most shows. :) I never would have made it to my first ACL Festival or SXSW without her to make the road trip with me, and I CERTAINLY wouldn't be in Nashville if she didn't randomly suggest it one winter break. All of my best adventures for the past 4 years have been with her, and for today's Monday morning mini-mix, I picked a few of the tunes [...]

How I Became The Bomb is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Their name isn't a declaration of ones social status, but rather, a last minute decision made by a close friend due to lack of a band name. The band met in Murfreesboro at Middle Tennessee State University. The guys came together and started making music simply for the abundance of joy it brings. Their sound is a collection of sci-fi-esque synthesizers, subtle shards of guitar, dance pop influenced drumming, and vocals that sound somewhere in between the likes of Ben Gibbard and Steve Bays. Here are some tracks from their EP [...]

Can you believe that The Features - " I Will Wander " playing Saturday, September 8 at 10:15 p.m. Cannery Ballroom Justin Townes Earle - " You Can't Leave " playing Thursday, September 6 at 11 p.m. The Basement (American Songwriter showcase) Lylas - " Call Her Home " playing Wednesday, September 5 at [...]
Did Spoon rip off the beginning of "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" from a How I Became The Bomb (who I lauded a couple months ago ) song? Someone sent me this link to the Nashville Cream who think so... After listening, they sound really really similar but I don't think the band necessarily stole it. Still, both songs are great and catchy so let's just leave it at that. Spoon - You Got Yr Cherry Bomb [...]
So, like many people I've been geeking out over the new Spoon record, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga . The first time I listened to it, I wasn't over the moon about it, but upon repeated listens, I gotta say this shit is a total grower. This record is all... Posted by Tracy Moore On 07/24/07 At 11:23 AM
How I Became The Bomb , although their name may not suggest it, is a band from Murfreesboro, Tennessee (how often do you hear someone say that?) that plays some of the smartest pop that you'll hear these days. They blew away a few people I knew at SXSW this year and after hearing gushing recommendations from them, I checked them out and became instantly addicted. The band released their EP Let's Go! early last year and I'm sad that I didn't hear about it then, or else it would have easily made my [...]

It's that time of year again - time for another big Grimey's / The Basement back parking lot blowout with excellent live music, even more excellent sales, and enough booze to make you want to blow your monthly music budget in one go. We all know everyone's favorite record shop knows how to host a great in-store performance (where it's usually happy hour), but nothing beats an all-day extravaganza with beer and burritos, back-to-back bands, and bins overflowing with $1 LPs and $2 CDs. This year the festivities fall on Cinco de Mayo, which means in [...]
For you Louisville (and surrounding cities) readers...This year's Forecastle Fest , an all-ages event, will be be headlined by De La Soul. The festival is Friday, July 27th and Saturday, July 28th at The Belvedere. This should be pretty great as it's in this newly beautified area of town and right on the river. I'm looking forward to it. Other great bands that will be playing are Girl Talk, Wax Fang, Odawas, Early Day Miners, The Old Ceremony, The Features, De Novo Dahl, The Impossible Shapes, Scourge Of The Sea, [...]

As I was sitting around over the weekend, I had Itunes on shuffle and "Robo" from How I Became The Bomb came on. I remember Rich from Cable & Tweed emailing me months ago about the band and their EP Let's Go . I checked it out and really enjoyed it but my laziness got the better of me and I completely forgot about it until hearing that track again. I've never really seen the band mentioned anywhere else, so I figured I should give them some love here on the site. Not [...]

I spent most of the week at Smith's Olde Bar for the Devil Stole the Beat's collection of artist showcases, mainly because there was a roster of killer acts all under one roof. Friday night was probably the best showing of what the city of Atlanta and surrounding areas have to offer music lovers. The first act I caught was Corey Crowder , who is a singer/songwriter that apparently has a pretty big following, despite the fact that the dude is a rip off of John Mayer. If I wanted to be ripped off, I'd go to [...]
i know... i'm a slacker, but after the holiday season i got sick. real sick. and then i had to drive my dad's car around having only the radio for entertainment. it has been terrible. but today i picked my car up and on the drive home i cranked up my stereo and sang obnoxiously loud all the way home. sorry for explaining all of that, but the moral of my story... radio + sickness = unmotivated music blogger. now that it's over, let's discuss some simply wonderful music that has pulled me out of my funk lately. [...]

Hyun Joon at our wonderful Christmas party. Today I played with an old Casio keyboard at Joanna's house. It was seriously Awesome! Joanna and I were at Fosselman's ice cream place and the ice cream is taking a toll on my stomach. Have you seen the new Fantastic Four and Transformers Trailers!?!?!!? Gotta watch them here ! Check it in HD. Okay new music. Most of this music is folky acoustic ish. Just a random mix [...]

[MP3] How I Became The Bomb - Secret Identity [MP3] How I Became The Bomb - Robo Happy New Year, gang! By now, we've popped our corks. We've tossed our confetti. We've shrieked, and sucked face, and hummed that nonsense about "old acquaintances." Yes sir, we're filing our year-end lists safely away. We're almost done celebrating 2006 and we're ready to place [...]

I have to say that 2006 was a good year for music. I've been puzzling over this list for the last month but I'm proud to bring you these tunes as a "best of" for 2006. 10. Belle & Sebastian - "For the Price of a Cup of Tea" / Download I know it's a bit cliched but to me, Belle & Sebastian are still geniuses. This is one of the best singles I've heard from them in quite a while and they rocked it in [...]

I should be filing this post under a new category called "It's About Damn Time, Janet." I FINALLY made it out to see local buzz band How I Became the Bomb a little over a week ago - months after the group started generating hype around town as the next big thing. I'm always a little nervous about seeing a band when my expectations have been forcibly pushed skyward - it feels a little like I'm the last one going to see the new "funniest movie EVER" and of course I'll be nothing but disappointed. But [...]

Well, based solely on the name alone, I felt obligated to review this band. How I Became the Bomb is a relatively new band from the hotbed of Rock n' Roll, Murfreesboro, TN. Before I had found that out, I would've pegged them for the latest British dance-rock band. The vocals are distinctly inflected and the band is synth'd up and ready to shake some ass. Tonight we're going to take a "Track Seven One Listen" look at this recently released EP from the quirky five-piece throwback band. According to this article from [...]

Download: How I Became The Bomb -- " Secret Identity " (via midwest music summit ) Things are really hopping with our neighbors to the north, Nashville . In addition to indierock hall of famers like Lambchop and the Silver Jews , there's a whole new crop of young bands springing up there making interesting music. What we at the 'Cropper like about what we know of the Nashville scene is that there doesn't appear to be any particular sound. The bands diverge wildly from one another in [...]
