Badwater will, I'd bet my bottom buck, be one of those classic unheralded records of the year that just so happens to be 2013. It was released midway through January, the month which for self-explanatory motives is so frequently overlooked in the end of years anyhow though most perturbing was the desperate lack of hyperbole to have greeted that initial emission of its dreamy shoegaze consistency. And it's an absolutely mystifying testament to its uniform quality that Lies – the flip to forthcoming single, Caught Up – didn't make the final cut, for this is Speck Mountain [...]

The VPME We've a sneaking suspicion that the once venerated NME may well be looking for a new musical horse to back very soon. Sadly they are about to discover that the band they've spent the last six months portraying as " the most exciting band on earth right now" are about to release what can only be described as a musical turkey of epic proportions. And yes, we almost fell for it too! The ghostly echo of Joe Lean and The Jing Jong (" one [...]

With the wellingtons and Bacardi Breezers of yesterweek interchanged with Jesus sandals and inky viscous brews, Dots & Dashes' sojourn down in Kent was this year pruned to but a day; axed to one solitary hop as it were into the lamentably all too known... Bogged down amid the uncountable oast houses, as we wade through the pollen-swollen air and eloquent enquiries of disconcertingly refined touts the first thing discerned is familiarity. For Hop Farm seems to have all but entirely neglected progression ever since it was [...]

Here we go again, for another year of musical adventures. Hoping you all had a great Christmas and New Year. Now that the silly season is over, let's get back to business. The Loudest Engine is the third studio album of London-based Australian indie rock band Howling Bells. The album was released through Cooking Vinyl on 9 September 2011. It was produced by Mark Stoermer and recorded at Battle Born Studios, in Las Vegas from September to December 2010. Read more »

Juanita Stein has a great voice, one that can be used to raise the ordinary to another level, which is, unfortunately what she’s called upon to do far to often on this, the band’s third record. She elevates the choruses with her own harmonies, creating miniature choirs with in the tracks. It saves a few numbers, but isn’t enough on some others. When she goes all ghostly falsetto on 'Into the Sky', it brings the drama to an otherwise stilted scene. Some songs stand out as completed pieces, 'Secrets', 'The Faith', rise above their component parts, more than the sum [...]

The Howling Bells remind me a little (just a tiny) bit of the Cocteau Twins. At least some of their songs do. On the great Cooking Vinyl label, the band features tremendous Australian vocals (and guitar work) of Juanita Stein, along with her brother Joel on lead guitar. It was recorded in Las Vegas and produced by a member of The Killers (Mark Stoermer). And that kind of glitz and glam is all over it. Which isn't a bad thing. Here's the single, Into the Sky ( mp3 DL ). [...]

Frank Yang It's right here , in these very pages, the fact that I didn't dig on Wild Beasts' last record Two Dancers and only after some persistence was able to reach a point of understanding it if not appreciating it. But mayhap that exercise softened me up enough that even though it wasn't as acclaimed as its predecessor, I took to this year's Smother almost immediately and also put Two Dancers back into rotation. All of which [...]

HOWLING BELLS 'The Loudest Engine ' Special. “Baby Blue” By Howling Bells . The Album –“The Loudest Engine.” The problem with producing a flawless debut album widely regarded by many as a genuine classic, is that there will always be those who demand that subsequent albums endlessly repeat variations on the [...]

The world may be full of rock bands, but few can boast a kick-ass female lead singer who delivers great vocals with an awesome band
Howling Bells just released their new album 'The Loudest Engine' earlier this month on Cooking Vinyl preceded by first single 'Into The Sky'. The London-based Aussie-formed band recorded in Las Vegas with production duties handled by Mark Stoermer of The Killers. The result is an album soaked in 70s sounds and seemingly influenced by the [...]

After two excellent and well received albums, Howling Bells took the eyebrow raising step of enlisting The Killers' Mark Stoermer to produce their third. 'Into The Sky' is the first single to be taken from those sessions, it's fairly conventional and thankfully produced without too much of the stadium sheen some had feared. It's unmistakeably a Howling Bells track, yet something seems to be missing. The vocals are as sweet as ever, the driving drums and bass are in place, the chorus is powerful and catchy, yet somehow 'Into The Sky' fails to engage in the way that [...]

Working with their third label in as many albums, Howling Bells decamped to Nevada to record their latest long-player and have returned louder and - well, just louder, really. Unfortunately for Stein, Stein & Co., amping up the volume seems to have been an overburdened objective, as there is little else to inspire extra attention. Unmatched by bolder ingredients or much added flavour, at times The Loudest Engine falls flat. Periodically enjoyable nevertheless, this is a semi-successful collection of melodic, 70s-styled rock music, less gothic than the eponymous debut and less synth-infiltrated [...]

Frank Yang Some were disappointed when Empire Of The Sun's long-awaited Toronto debut on Tuesday night was moved from the lakeside Echo Beach venue to the generally loathed Sound Academy for undisclosed "production issues"; it turned out to be a blessing as the weather finally got the memo that Autumn was here and, well, it would have been awfully cold down outside on the water at Ontario Place. Plus, there was the novelty of having the show take place right across the street from where Cirque du Soleil had pitched their [...]

Howling Bells - The Loudest Engine By Paul Faller Firstly, some context. 20062s self-titled debut record by Howling Bells remains a personal favourite of mine - it's a masterpiece of bleak, 3am loneliness, all haunting guitars and fragile emotions, and it positively drips with atmosphere. By contrast, I found 20092s follow-up Radio Wars to be a huge disappointment - it felt like the band had forgotten everything that made their music good in the first place. Thankfully, I'm pleased to report that third album The [...]
