RICK RUBIN-PRODUCED HOWLIN RAIN ROLLS INTO SASQUATCH MUSIC FESTIVAL SUNDAY, MAY 27 | 2:25-3:10PM | YETI STAGE "Less about improvisation than delivering a great variety of pedal-punching sounds with Crazy Horse backbone, Howlin Rain is the Wagnerian figment of every psych-rock blogger's fantasy." - Village Voice Photo Credit: Michael Caswell (Scene In The Dark) After storming the nation on tour promoting the release of their latest album The Russian Wilds (produced by Rick Rubin), psychedelic rock tempest Howlin Rain is poised to pound the [...]

The fifth album from the San Francisco-based roots rock band Howlin Rain features no electronic beats, no art rock pretensions, just some swaggering rock and roll. Read more »
I've been referencing Santana a lot in recent reviews I've written ( Howlin Rain , Radio Moscow , Bravo Johnson , etc.) figured I might spend a little time listening to the guitarist. Starting off with his greatest hits, this is the song that stuck out. I don't really have any interest in modern Santana stuff, but will keep digging into his early stuff.

Two Gallants at the Google Live Lot. 03/16/12 I present to you some photos of just a few of the Bay Area bands that played SXSW this year. I'm only one man, so I called on a couple friends to contribute photos as well. But even still, there was only so wide a net we could cast. For the first time in years, for instance, I somehow managed to not catch a single Thee Oh Sees concert — but have no fear, a Spin photographer captured this amazing moment (seriously, [...]

Howlin Rain, a powerhouse quintet from Santa Cruz, Calif., just released its third album, The Russian Wilds (American). The band's influences from the '60s and '70s are hard to ignore, and The Russian Wilds was produced by the great Rick Rubin. First single "Phantom In The Valley" depicts an apocalyptic vision, while frontman Ethan Miller's voice [...]
Howlin Rain burned through L.A. a few weeks back in the midst of their Winter tour in support of their latest LP, The Russian Wilds. Visceral in execution, it was one of the best shows I've seen this year. HR's Ethan Miller put together the following compilation for us - a seven track companion of [...]

If you are listening to a record by Howlin Rain chances are you are looking for some high quality rock music of the type that had its golden age in the 1970s; if so you will no doubt be very satisfied with The Russian Wilds . It picks up where their 2008 record Magnificent Fiend left off, while at the same time being a bit more focused and polished. Usually those are terms that would indicate a drop in quality or a more mainstream approach when it comes to rock music, but that is hardly the case [...]

Last week when AC Entertainment and Superfly Presents dropped the initial lineup for the 11th installment of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival , one of the acts that immediately caught our attention was Spectrum Road - an impressive super group consisting of legendary bass player Jack Bruce (Cream, Blind Faith), keyboard wiz John Medeski (MMW, The Word), guitar-virtuoso Vernon Reid (Living Colour) and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana (Lenny Kravitz, Santana). Our first thoughts were that the band was potentially a one-off, but today Billboard filled us in a bit more on the details. The [...]
Ethan Miller, the founder and frontman of Howlin' Rain, knows his history. Were it still the 1970s, the Humboldt County native and his band could have held their own with any of that era's West Coast greats. These days, some of the era's dinosaurs may still roam, but among current acts, Howlin' Rain have the mantle almost to themselves. The band wear their influences proudly; as Miller put

Sleigh Bells at Sasquatch! 2011 / photo by Alex Crick A nice extended weekend (President's Day), usually leads to a good week of shows. This week starts with Grimes at the Sunset Tavern on Monday night (sold out, sorry!). On Tuesday, Veronica Falls, Bleached , and Seapony are at the Tractor, and Damien Jurado plays a free in-store set at Sonic Boom Records in Ballard. Wednesday night, the extremely talented Cate Le Bon and Charles Leo Gebhardt are at the Crocodile, and Chuck Prophet and the [...]
A long time ago, rock music ruled the world; it dominated the radio so much that nobody blinked when a five, or even 10, minute song became an inescapable, played-to-death ubiquity. Musical heroes staked their claim on the stage before retreating to coke and groupie filled tour buses, only to do it all over again the next town over. It was a time before sincerity and swagger were replaced with irony. San Francisco's Howlin' Rain evokes those times with their third album, The Russian Wilds . If anyone wanted a crash course in 702s album-oriented [...]

Thursday things: ► Diamonds are forever (well, for the night, anyway) at the Troubabour — My Brightest Diamond , the nom de tune of Detroit native Shara Worden, shares the chamber-pop from her latest album, "All Things Will Unwind." And supporting will be Lavender Diamond; Becky Stark and crew have a new album on the horizon. ► The magnificent Raphael Saadiq joins Lenny Kravitz for a concert at the Nokia Theatre. ► And there's a nice lineup at Harvard & Stone, where the Bixby Knolls premiere their video for "Through the [...]
