Ice cold ice - Hüsker Dü I think my favourite period of Hüsker Dü is whichever one i happen to be listening to at the time. It's incredible to think a band covered so much ground in just seven-ish years of operation. That said, this might be my last favourite song by them, if i can even declare something like that and have it mean something or indicate a grade by it. And it was their last. A harbinger of what could have happened [...]

Numerology is one of those real weirdo sciences based on some sort of mathematical religion I won't even begin to understand. What does interest me though is that our time on this giant landfill is limited so when there is a awesome calendar that ends on 2012 you have to begin to wonder what the Mayans knew? What is going to happen from a year from now? Obviously their civilization did not stick around or maybe they just got on the good ship, put on their sneakers and got out of Dodge. Whatever the reason when ever there are songs [...]

Grant Hart got away from the strict "fast, hard, loud" confinements of hardcore punk for Zen Arcade. The result, their first really great album.
"It lasts about an hour", says one user, 16-year-old Luke Mpande, who prefers Jenkem to other substances. "With glue, I just hear voices in my head. But with Jenkem, I see visions. I see my mother who is dead and I forget about the problems in my life." “At the Lusaka sewage ponds, two teenage [...]

Wild Weekend , take 12. Like some ancient Greek oracle, the ghost in the iPod has spoken again. And once more it prophesied a musical six pack with a little something for everyone. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Btw: despite his lousy musical examples, I kinda agree with this guy that iTunes and iPods have changed the way one listens to music, and that these new technologies have even diluted the act of listening in a way. And we´re off to a furious start with some early [...]

GRANT HART Three reasons to head to Ronny's tonight... 1. Because legendary ex- Hüsker Dü drummer Grant Hart will be performing solo material. Though Hart is probably best known for being a member of Hüsker Dü, he formed alt-rock trio Nova Mob after their 1987 break up. Nova Mob, unfortunately, only lasted until the late 1990's, but Grant is still producing some quite exceptional solo material. His latest solo effort, Hot Wax , was released this past October and features the killer '60s-garage cut "You're the reflection [...]

"Bring me song of the sea... sing me a song of the sea." After a sailor´s theme, a six pack of songs about the sea is so obvious I almost opted out in the end. But as there are simply too many great songs inspired by the briny, I had no choice really. Selecting six beauties out of a truckload of candidates was hard enough. Here´s the ones that made the cut. Robert Wyatt´s contribution stems from his terrific Rock Bottom album. "You look different every time you come from [...]

I'm sure I've said this many times, but I dig festivals because they give me a chance to drop in and say hi to people who were important to me as a youngun. I was hell of into Hüsker Dü's New Day Rising , so I'm glad to have the opportunity to see Bob Mould (Sunday, 4:45). It looks like he's not playing the "ignore the past" game, so we can probably expect to hear some "I Apologize" or "Celebrated Summer," which will be plenty good enough for me. Today's Vedge is from [...]

the weekend in green lake started off with a bang. Hüsker Dü "Whatcha Drinkin'"

Late last week word came down that Bob Mould had recruited No Age to perform a set of Hüsker Dü tunes it warmed my heart to know that the second best possible version of the band would indeed be hitting a stage. Sure, it may not be Mould, Grant Heart, and Greg Norton, but it will be the first time Hüsker Dü songs are played in a live setting in a few years and I'm excited for the chance to see (so long as I can find the cash to cough up!). It also led me down nostalgia road, listening [...]
Bob Dylan to release Christmas album, Bob Mould to play Hüsker Dü songs at ATP & the Sounds announce First Avenue date.
Grant Hart , Mark Olson , Prince Rogers Nelson , and Paul Westerberg were all born within three and a half years of each other in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Hart, New York-born Bob Mould and Illinois-born Greg Norton stated the hardcore band Husker Du at about the same time as Westerberg and his Minneapolis-born friends Bobby and Tommy Stinson and Chris Mars formed The Replacements . The two bands even performed together and had somewhat of a healthy competition in the Minneapolis music scene. Although by the time that [...]

June is nearly over, and with that we shall celebrate LGBT Pride month (thanks Obama) , yes it's no longer just Gay Pride, which I think is awesome. Here in NYC specifically we've just ended Pride week , a week filled with marches, parades and parties all over the city. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the catalyst for the modern LGBT rights movement. We are still fighting for equal rights but with more and more states allowing same sex marriage and with a democrat in office again, it seems likely [...]
