Huey "Piano" Smith and the Clowns: Tu-Ber-Cu-Lucas and the Sinus Blues [ purchase ] Here's a fine slice of 1959 New Orleans R&B from the man who also gave us the "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu". Though not as well known as some of his contemporaries, Smith is one of the greats, having played piano for more famous pianists Fats Domino and Little Richard, among others. David Lindley: Tu-Ber-Cu-Lucas and the Sinus Blues [...]

by Pete Wingfield I wrote and recorded "Scratchy 45s" in 1976, as a tribute to the New Orleans R&B that I loved then, and still do. The idea was to cram in as many crafty musical and lyrical allusions as possible, while still ending up with a proper original song! I'm sure fellow BWF-ers, being true cognoscenti, will have no trouble spotting them all. Yeah, I know the tempo is a bit too fast and the groove is hardly authentic, but hey, give me a break - it was 33 years ago, I was still kinda green behind [...]

I was contemplating a couple posts for the remaining month...one that would feature some of my favorite cover versions of Silent Night and one that would be for Martin Luther King Jr. Day/Inauguration Day. I have to say it's harder to find serious Christmas songs for the Inauguration. Some silly songs about black elves were about as close as I could find, or I could have celebrated the best in Christmas music by African American artists. Just not a whole lot of political Christmas songs that aren't novelty joke songs. But I came across [...]

Even in the MP3 age, there are CDs worth searching out—and that require the search. "O.O.P., We Did It Again" is dedicated to great albums that are criminally out of print, and that aren't necessarily likely to become available anytime soon. The album: This Is... Huey "Piano" Smith (1998), one of a handful of superb early-rock compilations brought to us by the fondly remembered, albeit short-lived, reissue label Music Club. Classic material: Huey "Piano" Smith wasn't a singer, but a session player and bandleader [...]

See, I love all types of music. While I am very much enjoying the early 90's stuff that is a good percentage of the tapes left in the Oxfam bin, there are always lots of other good things. This last week I also picked up some other good early jazz/rocknroll stuff and a great tape from Ivo Papasov Tina Turner - I Can't Belive What You Say 2. Shirley Ellis - The Nitty Gritty 3. Huey "Piano" Smith and The Clowns - "Don't You Just Know It" YouÂ're a chicken, a shrimp, and a pig. YouÂ're a thirteen-year-old cow(ard) leaning against the wall of a middle school gymnasium, paralysed. YouÂ're hoping that someone will ask you to dance, while praying that no one will ask you to dance. The dignified among your kind - those unwanteds with at least a modicum of self-knowledge - can presently be found amidst the library stacks, seeking out a Robert Cormier novel, or The Catcher in the Rye, i.e., some small, safe pleasure that canÂ't lead to VD. Can [...]
