Tweet "Who is that anyway?" Answer: Kim Ki O ! Hailing from Istanbul, Turkey, electronic musical duo Kim Ki O (which, if you haven't guessed from my incredibly witty opening sentence, means "Who is that, anyway?" in Turkish) is made up of Ekin Sanaç on synths, keys, vocals, beats and Berna Göl on bass, vocals, beats. The two friends have known each other for over fifteen years, and have been hard at work making music as Kim Ki O since 2006. Their music is [...]
Divorce From: Glasgow, Scotland Living up to their name Glasgow noise mongers Divorce are a radical break from the 21st century music scene. Their new single is two blistering, mind numbing blasts of uncompromising, uncommercial and borderline unlistenable atonal punk. They resurrect Riot Grrrl, give it a good kicking and send it out into the world snarling and ready to bite any bearded folkies it happens to stumble across. If you like your music unchallenging, straightforward and ukulele strewn then this is unlikely to be for [...]
Matrimony From: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Australian punks Matrimony (not to be confused with the altogether smoother but still cool US duo Matrimony ) were a fixture on the short lived and unrecorded underground Australian riot grrrl scene way back in the 90s. The Australian Riot Grrrl scene doesn't even warrant a mention on the Riot Grrrl wikipedia page and Matrimony aren't listed on the Wikipedia list of Riot Grrrl bands! As with many of their peers they left a limited legacy. [...]
i've posted a couple of tracks from this before (in 2006!), but never ripped the whole thing, so here it is in all its glory. this is still one of the best compilations i've ever heard, partly because it contains some fine songs, but mainly for the spirit and energy it conveys. i bought it from a then rare visit to rough trade in covent garden and was immediately inspired to do it myself. the whole concept is so rough & ready, it was hard to listen to it and not want to have a go. [...]
Hey Chicago! I'll be DJing (along with DJ Ang G ) all of your favorite riot grrrl, queercore, afropunk, local punk, and other "rocking tunes" tonight at Exit (1315 W. North Ave.)! I don't know about you, but I'm really excited to hear these songs blasted out of a speaker system that's NOT in my living room. So tell me your favorite riot grrrl songs and come hang out with us tonight! (and here are a couple of my favorites to get you excited) [...]
On the wolves' tip - Huggy Bear Weaponry Listens to Love was the first Huggy Bear album i owned. It's the only album they ever released, but you know what i mean - the first Huggy Bear i could take home with me. I was not at all ready for it. All i had heard was the obvious: Dissthentic Penetration , Pansy Twist , Her Jazz . All i expected was straightforward. in anger, intent and music. Like [...]

The show is also all ages and on a $5-$10 sliding scale (and benefits a great cause) so there's no excuse not to go! Check out a few of our favorite riot grrrl/queercore songs and see you there! rowdy one-off release from a riot grrrl supergroup, featuring members of linus, huggy bear, blood sausage, skinned teen and sister george. according to skinned teen's layla "chris wrote the lyrics crouched down in the tube station we were waiting for bratmobile to come. the studio was toe rag [later made famous via jack white's patronage], which is the same place a lot of billy childish/holly go lightly stuff was recorded, really rad old equipment and atmosphere too. it was a drunken party style recording, songs all written on the spur of the moment." "I began pouring out my pony gear on top Susan who was still prone on the bed. While Dakota was outside getting his things, I climbed into my black Lycra second skin. After a quick brushing out of my tail, Susan wrapped my harness belt around my waist, with the long full tail flowing down my legs. With a glimpse of remorse, I realized that poor Dakota was left to his own devices in getting tacked up, but Susan already had me slipping away – and certainly one pony could not harness another. I recall holding [...]
it was slagging this record off in kylie fanzine that got me in touch with andy from linus . and while much of what i said at the time was complete bollocks, i still don't think this is a very good record, with most of the blame lying at the feet of bikini kill. "white boy" is great, but the rest, let's be honest, is pretty crap. huggy bear were a far superior band, more inventive, more subtle, more melodic, blending raw nation of ulysses-style punk, bubblegum pop and lo-fi vulnerability. sorry about the skip at the [...]

Not really, but I needed some sort of wittles of a title to bring all components of this post together. It makes sense to me, and at the end of the day (a v-e-r-y slow day at that), you'll just skip to the free track, and we're cool with that. Huggy Bear was an English riot grrrl band, formed in 1991 in London. During the course of their existence, they refused to be photographed or interviewed by mainstream press, nor gave their full names once they began [...]

Don't Kill Yourself Cuz People Can't Deal With Your Brilliance
I just listened to this song for the first time in a very long time and oh my goodness: BIG FEELINGS. Just go ahead and see if you can listen without wanting to tear your chest open and smear what's inside all over the walls. I went to see Team Dresch on their reunion tour a few years ago and it was a sight to behold. Not just the band- who were obviously excellent and riveting- but also the crowd. Dykes in the pit with fists triumphant in the air, singing every single word, faces upturned with a [...]

Whatever heppened to: Huggy Bear?
While the Riot Grrrl movement was taking root in North America, as is often the case there were similar stirrings going on across the pond. That branch of the subgenre was led foremost by UK boy/girl band Huggy Bear. The band had amassed quite the cult following prior to their breakup (even scoring a mention in Mary Lou Lord's "His Indie World"). But the players have been scarce since then.So

We Came, We Saw, We Conquered
A few days ago I was having lunch with a friend. He said something which I thought was interesting, the gist of it being that San Diego music wouldn't have been what it was if it weren't for the influences of Washington DC's Nation of Ulysses and Olympia's Unwound. I agreed, but added that without those two bands, the SD sound would have still been unique, it just would have been culled from a smaller pool of local influence, specifically from the likes of Drive Like Jehu and Rocket From the Crypt. Never the less, there was a time in [...]
