Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell endorsed free music downloading in a recent BBC interview . Hugh argues that a new generation is exposed to his music through the Internet and they, in turn, spend more money on his live performances. Hugh's latest album, Hooverdam, is available for free download at his website. He has also released the MP3 for single [...]
In a recent BBC News interview , former Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell endorsed free music downloading, coming just as the British government plans to crack down on illegal downloaders. Cornwell, currently touring the United States, argues that a new generation is exposed to his music through the Internet and they, in turn, spend more money on his live performances. "There's a whole generation of people who have never heard of me or the band I used to be in, The Stranglers. The question is, how do I reach them?" Cornwell asks in the video. "As [...]

Ryan (StopMe): I've been on a serious Talking Heads binge this week after finally watching what is often described as the finest Concert-Film ever produced, in the shape of 1984's 'Stop Making Sense' (Can't wait for a UK Blu-Ray release!). I've also found another ten wonderful tunes for your ears to enjoy: Andrew W.K.'s High-Energy/Metal 'I Get Wet' album is possibly one of my all time top 10 LPs. Since then he's done Power-Ballads, Eighties-Rock, produced Lee "Scratch" Perry and even released an instrumental Piano music album. [...]

The UK rock legend is heading to the states with a spring tour.
Hugh Cornwell, the legendary lead singer/guitarist of the British new wave/punk pioneering Stranglers is about to embark upon a U.S. tour. While this is probably not a big deal to most of us considering he's not coming remotely near DFW, there is still a bit of exciting news to accompany this bit of news; Cornwell's latest solo effort, Hooverdam , is now available for free download via his website . It's the perfect accompaniment to a night of drinking cheap whiskey in a cheap hotel while discussing the merits of the grunge music and/or child-rearing. [...]

Hugh Cornwell is a man with equal parts grit and wit. He has been an acclaimed writer and live performer since his time as the primary songwriter, singer, and guitarist of punk and new wave legends The Stranglers. His recently released eighth album, Hooverdam, is an eloquent and exciting mix of rhythm & blues, rock and post-punk. Hugh will also cross the Atlantic this Spring and treat his US fans to his fiery live show. Though he may be one of the UK's finest talents, Hugh's [...]

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Hugh Cornwell . His newest album is Hooverdam.

Hugh Cornwell turned 60 a few weeks ago, but the material on his current 'Hooverdam' album and his marketing strategy certainly aren't what you'd expect from a sexagenarian. Cornwell doesn't celebrate birthdays, so maybe that's what gives him the vitality of someone half his age. The Stranglers founder laid down his most recent album 'Hooverdam' at London, England's Toe Rag Studios (where owner/engineer Liam Watson also recorded the White Stripes ' 'Elephant') and it is quite a departure from his previous LP 'Beyond Elysian Fields.' Cornwell's loud electric [...]
Many artists who came out of the original punk/new wave movement have reinvented themselves over time. X's John Doe is a born again country star. Paul Weller has had many permutations, as has David Byrne.Judging from his new album, Hooverdam, former Stranglers' guitarist/singer Hugh Cornwell does not fit into that category. Cornwell seems lost in the directionless haze that dominated punk

Hugh Cornwell was a key Strangler back in the 1970s. Founding member and all that. The Stranglers ' first three LPs rock beyond comprehension. I saw Cornwell play in NYC, opening for the " From the Jam " show in winter 2008 before moving west. (Hey, there I am in front on the right !). His set was cool, full of the grit and rawness that has characterized his rough-hewn R & B sound for awhile. Hear his new LP at his site with option to download. More info [...]

Though my new WFMU show is immersion total in scary metal and noise, this particular aesthetic apex could never have been realized without the formative contribution of my obsession with The Stranglers . I feel compelled, as Diane Kamikaze has done in the past , to bang the drum for Hugh Cornwell—singer, author, guitarist and former co-frontman for the paranormal punk combo (who still record and tour without him , under the Stranglers moniker.) Hugh's made a great new record, Hooverdam , and you can download the full album for free, with [...]

I love The Stranglers. I think they were one of the best bands to emerge from the late punk era, though they never comfortably fit the punk mold in the first place. After all, they could play their instruments! Plus, how many punk bands peaked in popularity with a waltz? A great deal of my admiration can be attributed to lead singer Hugh Cornwell , who just had 'it'. Despite his sometimes throaty delivery (or perhaps *because* of it) he had a real charisma about him. He forced you to sit up and take notice. I'll admit [...]

Admittedly not much of a fan of his type of music, I feel compelled to at least acknowledge the passing of Michael Jackson and his immense contribution to music and dance. His personal demons notwithstanding, it was too soon an ending to a life that started with so much promise and a career with so much talent. Actually, it was kind of a sad week all around with the passings of Ed McMahon and Farrah Fawcett. Americana losing icons is always difficult in the sense of saying goodbye to yet another part of one's adolescent past. The writers of [...]
