By Alex Brenner Although I must say 2012 has been pretty good musically so far, I always find myself digging up some older records. When I say older I'm talking about late 902s and up, not the classics. Talking with fellow A-Lister Rube, the other night we did a little reminiscing and it got me thinking about some great records of the past. The ones where you say "Oh man, I have not heard that in forever!" I do listen to tons of new music too, however, these are some you may have forgotten about or [...]

Two decades from now, how do you think 2011 will be remembered? As the year we lost Amy Winehouse? How about the year three of music's most iconic outfits - The White Stripes, R.E.M., and LCD Soundsystem - all decided to call it quits? Maybe Lana Del Rey will prove a sustainable force and then we can all tell our children about the great collagen debate of 2011. Or try to explain to them how two rock and roll hall of famers came together to create the worst piece of music imaginable. Yeah, 2011 was a fucking weird year. [...]

Fun Fun Fun Fest photo coverage concludes at Austin Town Hall. There is dust in every crevice… …of my camera gear. Day three had a weird blend to it. Starting with an interview with WWPJ, We caught OBN III and Davila 666 at Black Stage followed by WWPJ's set, Mate of State segued to MNDR and Austra. Jumpcut to Ted Leo,dial it back to dance party with Architecture in Helsinki, back up again for Hum and then Easing out with Black Lips and Slayer (?). You know what is past [...]
A breakdown of the Weird, the Wild, and the Fantastic acts that made Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 live up to its name.
Monday, November 7, 2011 The sixth Fun Fun Fun Fest took place at Auditorium Shores this weekend, and I was on hand to witness every bit of it. Below you'll find my five favorite sets and a thought on the festival itself. Enjoy. - Fun Fun Fun Fest Recap - Purity Ring I'm so happy that I went to check out Purity Ring even though I was feeling [...]
1) Hum - Stars she thinks she missed [...]

Author's Note: I am using the term "indie rock" as a means to categorize these lists. The artists represented in this list can fall under many genres. Greetings Autumn enthusiasts. Wade here again for another list of albums that I seem to play most in the fall. This time around I decided to go in a more indie rock direction. In the last list I created , I went for more popular albums, as bloggers often tend to whip out their hipster cocks when talking about music. They'll find the most esoteric bands they [...]

This past weekend, the always quality pop culture arm of the immensely popular Onion , The A.V. Club brought their expertise into the real world with the first annual A.V. Fest in Chicago, Ill. Hosted by the legendary Hideout, A.V. Fest was a time of hearty pop culture reflection, with a smattering of under-the-radar or nearly forgotten acts. Not to take away, most every band on the bill was necessary, and gave further insight into The A.V. Club and what the editors value as far as art is concerned. [...]
Hum has a very loyal nearly cult like status amongst those fans who remember the timelessness sound of their albums You'd Prefer An Astronaut (1995) and Downward is Heavenward (1998). Prior to their headlining spot at the A.V. Club Festival, Hum did a warm up gig in Champaign, Illinois at the High Dive where they played old favorites and unreleased tune "Inklings" along with a new song "Cloud City" that droned and roared in its drop C. Hum have hinted they would possibly release the above two songs as an EP on lead singer Matt Talbott's [...]

Hum It's a big weekend, folks. There's Hum's much-anticipated headlining appearance at the inaugural A.V. FRIDAY GANGLIANS In the mood for some crooked surf rock? Then [...]

Illustration by Johnnie Cluney Art rockers My Gold Mask and noise-jam enthusiasts Disappears both stopped by Daytrotter to record live sessions that surfaced this weekend on the Rock Island, Illinois-based music website. It is hard to imagine the Chicago duo My Gold Mask any more stripped down, but Daytrotter managed to capture singer and drummer Gretta Rochelle and guitarist Jack Armando's ghostly primal essence while still sounding utterly minimalist. You can stream My Gold Mask's entire set right now or download it for free in 128K [...]
This power trio from Columbus, Ohio sounds like my CD collection circa 1994 - it's beer-soaked, guitar-driven, genre-escaping rock played with all dials set to 11. Oh yeah, it should be mentioned that the guys were able to cross at least one music-related item off the Speed Governor bucket list - the legendary Steve Albini recorded these tracks at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Recommended for fans of: Archers of Loaf, Hum, Chavez, Jawbox The Crime of the Century Last Century by [...]
Still one of music's best kept secrets, Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest has been pulverizing ear drums for the past five years with a genre bending lineup mixing rock, metal, hip hop, and comedy. This year's bill is no different, with metal titans Slayer, iconic hip-hop outfit Public Emeny, dance pop maestros Passion Pit, synth master M83, and a Danzig Legacy set (Danzig/Samhain/Danzig & Doyle Perform Misfits) topping the bill. Set for November 5-6 at Auditorium Shores, this year's edition also promises Rakim, Major Lazer, Okkervil River, Kid Dynamite, Flying Lotus, the [...]
Between Pavement, Guided By Voices, Soundgarden, and A Perfect Circle, it seemed like any and every band not named The Smiths reunited in 2010. That trend has continued into 2011 with the return of Pulp, Bad Meets Evil, and Death From Above 1979. Now, three more seminal rock outfits have announced their own respective resurrections. Let's start with San Diego-based post-hardcore outfit Hot Snakes . Led by Rick Froberg and John Reis, the band broke up in 2005, with its members going on to form Obits and The Night Marchers. However, after the original lineup reunited during [...]

I went to the Skylark Saturday night for Radio8Ball without knowing much about the event other than The Young Evils would be playing in some kind of audience participation experimental theater. I'd heard good things about the band, and I like the Skylark so it was a no-brainer. I got there at 8:00 while the band was sound checking and before there was anyone working the door. I sat at the end of the bar and was immediately approached by a woman in black with short hair, "Hi are you here for the show?" I misunderstood [...]
At least one man - maybe scores of men - once said that music is not your friend in the immediate aftermath of a negative life-changing event. I don't know who said that (Thomas Hobbes? Kierkegaard? Sirhan Sirhan?) but he made a good point. Pretty much every song ever penned was done so to remind [...]
