Lately I have been into the BBC America show Skins on Netflix and bulldozed through the first two seasons. This program applies an interesting spin on the teen drama as opposed to American contemporaries on account of better music, more sex, and more drugs. I've actually decided to start a drinking game based on every time they light up "splif". Stir in those elements with clever writing and thoughtful character development, and the product is useful entertainment. I'm told that the 3rd and latest season loses some punch in the progression to a new [...]

I just discovered today ( a little late since they released their EP "We Are Here For You" in 2006, and "Some Things Come and Go" in sept 2008) and I am enjoying their unique and organic sounding folk electronic sound. Music for Humans by Huma, their style is still very acoustic and subtle even though they describe themselves as electronic. An easy listen that will get you though the day this Wednesday evening. "A brother. A sister. A best friend/girlfriend. Kids behind counters making music on coffee breaks. Teachers after school playing NYC [...]

I was contacted a couple of days ago by a group called Hello, Broken Arrow . I almost titled this post Hello, Hello, Broken Arrow, but the explanation would have stripped away whatever thin humour was there to begi... never mind. The songs are lovely, but their MySpace page is so sparse that I could have done little more than re-post the music here and say 'here ya go', which somewhat defeats the purpose of mp3 blogging if you ask me. So, a little more detail: they are a group of Seattle musicians [...]

Tonight is a busy night in DC for shows. The Red and the Black has Shenandoah Davis and Huma while the Blcak Cat has Maps & Atlases, Rahim, and Nurses. Also in DC are Brothers and Sisters who play DC9 along with Sera Cahoone, Sam Champion, and The Beanstalk Library. Up in Philly, the M Room has Miracle Fortress while the North Star Bar has The Neighborhood Choir, The New Up, Quantine Rabbit, Farcial Hoodwink, and Lux Perpetua. That's all for now. Dear friends, There are TV rumors of snowfall, the suggestion of advancing snowflakes. I can't wait to hear the oh so satisfying crunch of freshly fallen snow under my feet and see the city blanketed in white. The morning after it hits, I will take a stroll and listen to this song before the sleet turns it all into slush. Song to seek: Feels Like I'm Walking /Huma (mp3) They also do dishes. [...]

Huma started out as a duo of New Jerseyites who wanted to counter the smothering influence of malls and suburban sprawl. Their answer: Folktronic pop blessed with a childlike innocence. Score one for the good guys. www.cult-hero.com www.humamusic.com

A gray and rainy Sunday has passed, and I couldn't get myself to do anything productive today. I have a big pile of photos to sort, I have some MySpace-friend-requests still pending (sorry to you all, I will work my way through those soon!!), and my desk looks like a warzone. Anyway, I'm just too lazy now to be creative, so please accept this rather slow mixtape here. Gravenhurst - Animals Stuart Staples - That Leaving Feeling [...]
When I posted the last "baker's dozen downloads" a couple weeks ago, I got crazy hits and lots of nice notes, so I'm gonna try to make it a bi-weekly thing.
