After the release of the Human Highway record, featuring Nic from Islands , I truly expected a lot more of a mellow approach to singwriting. But, then Nic went out and threw Vapours at us. It's not that I minded, but I was looking forward to a more contemplative side of the man, which might be what we're getting when Islands release A Sleep and A Forgetting on February 14th via Anti- Records [...]
"When Love and Fate Collide"Human Highway - Directors Bernard Shakey & Dean Stockwell (1982)With the unfolding nuclear calamity in Japan continuing to meltdown, it might not seem the best time to reference an old film by Neil Young. But here's why we're posting this. The 1982 film Human Highway by Neil Young portrays the Earth's last day following a nuclear holocaust. Nick Diamond (aka Nick Thornburn) has been relatively silent the last several months, but who can blame the guy. Between 2008 and 2009, Diamond fronted three distinctive outfits ( Islands , Reefer, Human Highway), subsequently releasing four albums. After conquering a wide-array of musical expression, the Canadian native decided to create his own genre with Man Man's Ryan Kattner earlier this year. Officially ending his hibernation, Diamond will be hitting the road this summer as Islands. Sponsored by Filter Magazine, the band will be combining forces with Brooklyn new wavers Steel Phantoms and Los [...]

The Gum just tossed this Miniature Tigers song up this morning, and I've been rocking to it ever since then. The great thing is that it was produced by adopted Austin artist Alan Palomo of Neon Indian fame. It sort of reminds me of something along the lines of an electronic version of Human Highway . Basically, that means it rules. This jam is set to come out on the group's album Fortress , which hits stores [...]

I've got another song for everyone today from the Montreal-based indie-rock/pop band Islands . Switched On can be found as the opening track to the band's 3rd full-length album Vapours , released on September 22nd of this year. In an interview with Pitchfork over the summer, Islands' front-man Nicholas Thorburn (Nick Diamonds) described his mindset during the making of the album as "I needed to withdraw from overblown metaphors and filling every possible sonic space. So this record is just made up of sequenced programming, synths, drum machines, guitars, and real bass. [...]

We've been closely following news that Islands will be releasing Vapours this September on Anti Records . Anything Nic Thorburn lays his hands upon turns up to be genius in our books, be it this band or Human Highway or the much missed Unicorns . This new tracks is a different approach to songwriting for him, with the empty space left open for his voice to soar. Try this track on [...]
From Wiki : Human Highway is a 1982 comedy film starring and co-directed by Neil Young under his pseudonym Bernard Shakey. Dean Stockwell co-directed the film and acted along with Russ Tamblyn, Dennis Hopper, and the post-punk and new wave band Devo. Included is an unusual collaborative performance of "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" by Devo and Neil Young with Booji Boy singing lead vocals and Young playing lead guitar. The film was shown in only select theaters and was not released on VHS until 1995. It received poor reviews upon its premiere [...]

First off, a message to everyone who has emailed BowlingStone.com in the last couple months, sending in music, asking for info, or just saying whats-up. If we haven't gotten back to you yet, it is not because we are being d-bags, we are just wicked wicked busy. I plan on digging into the 200-ish unanswered emails tonight, so have faith. Tonight's tune comes to us from the Canadian indie-rock band Human Highway , and their debut album Moody Motorcycle which was released in August of 2008. The Sound was the lead single to the [...]

I've spent the whole weekend writing a sermon about the Unitarian Universalist hymnbook for this weekend's lay service at our church. Now I've got hymnal on the brain, and the thought of switching over to folk music makes my head hurt. Which would be a problem, if it were not for the fact that the modern Unitarian Universalist hymnal is about as folk-oriented as a hymnbook gets. It wasn't always that way. The UU hymnal has gone through several incarnations since the first one was published in 1937. [...]

Human Highway are yet another band I've been keeping to myself. Sometimes I have trouble figuring out what to say about an album and I keep listening, waiting for inspiration. To be honest though, writing mediocre album reviews gets tough. Sometimes you just need to share without worrying about sounding eloquent. Human Highway released an album early this year called Moody Motorcycle via Suicide Squeeze Records and it makes me all warm inside. I love breezy, summer folk music and that's what Nick Thorburn (also a member of the band Islands ) and Jim [...]

Paul Hammond Halifax's Dog Day have got the goods to be a terrific pure pop band, capable of crafting sublime melodies and hooks, but their fondness for the noisier virtues of the indie rock canon of the '90s ensures that they'll never be quite so easy to pin down. As such, their 2006 effort Night Group was an incongruous yet perfectly natural bit of doom-pop, all spiky and sweet - heavy and foreboding in intent but eminently hummable in execution. Their recently-released follow-up Concentration [...]
So this year's Creative Loafing Music Issue is officially on the stands -- you can't miss it -- it's a big mixtape. It made me think for a minute they had decided to change the orientation of the paper. (They haven't.) That could be one strategy to keep people reading ...
My Atlanta readers are likely hyper-aware of the lack of power around Atlanta thus far this week. Thanks to some lovely tornado weather, half of the city has been crippled without power since yesterday morning. Including me. Georgia Power tells me I won't be getting my power back until tomorrow ...

I hope that your Easter looked as good as that one. We got heavy wet snow and I wore my Easter dress anyways, out of defiance (yes, I still try and get a new Spring-y dress every Easter). I am glad to report the usual arsenal of Cadbury Creme Eggs and no Peeps. Several songs in these past days have set my blogger heart ablaze in the best way. My friend Dainon pointed out that I am on a sky kick lately when it comes to song lyrics, and I was surprised to realize that he is absolutely [...]
It's almost hard to believe that Apop Records (2831 Cherokee Street) has had a St. Louis storefront since 2007. Fittingly, the experimental record store/shop was ahead of the Cherokee Street renaissan... Continue reading "Apop Records Celebrates Its Fifth Birthday with Shows, Movies, Record Store Day" >

It's almost time for the weekend. Here's some happy indie for you. I hope you enjoy it all weekend long. So you can take it with you... The Sound by Human Highway

Ok well technically this was actually day 2 of the music festival, but we were unable to make it down on Wednesday (hopefully next year) so we journeyed down early Thursday morning for our first taste ever of SXSW. I have been basically living in Texas for about 6 years and have never made the trip down for this festival, and there was kind of always an air of secrecy and insiderness to the proceedings so I really had zero idea what to expect. I would say with a few exceptions the festival blew my expectations away and [...]
