ALBUM REVIEW: There are a lot of fuzz-o-gistics going on with Black Wine's Summer of Indifference from their familiar So Cals sounds at times that are mixed with some Mission of Burma and then there are these epic zen-arcadian moments that just rip up the planks. There are also dark pop gems like "Maycrowing" with Miranda their drummer singing who's narrative like storytelling style evens out the Milo-esque keel in this vessel. In earnest all the vocal melodies drive this underground popish outfit. It's a very fine roast [...]

After releasing his Matador debut Smoke Ring For My Halo , touring the country, and becoming a proud father to his first child, 2011 has already been quite explosive for Kurt Vile, the enigmatic Philadelphia songwriter emoting lyrics with the wisdom of an elderly guru over often-heavy, fuzzed out rock jams. Even then, the show must go on though, and Vile really seems to be making the most of this instrumental time in his career, using this new "Rhapsody Original" session to gear up for a few dates on the East Coast, before taking off on his next tour [...]

Kurt Vile - "Hunchback" from his album, "Childish Prodigy."

Philadelphia's soloist Kurt Vile (also The War On Drugs ) creates lo-fi folk rock with a hard edge. With numerous releases to his name of late he has become known for improving his abstract self productions and grainy guitar sections each time. His latest, and first on Matador Records , Childish Prodigy captures his own sound brilliantly. 'Hunchback', the album opener blends together with home recording effects to reveal distorted mono phone vocals over his Dylan and Young inspired drenches. Lengthy sections of dusty electric guitar chords hold the analog approach and even more [...]
When Kurt Vile's Constant Hitmaker seeped into my ears, I was a little underwhelmed. So, imagine my surprise when I saw this guy getting picked up by Matador Records. Because of my faith in the label, I decided to give the Philly singer-songwriter another chance, and I found out how wrong I really was.Kurt's music is veiled in a thin layer of lo-fi that gives his bleak, dreary rock songs a

Kurt Vile's new album is a no-fi treasure, perfect for this this year's descent into winter
"What is this, Finding Forrester ? You taught me something? I learned nothing from you. No, I taught you everything; you taught me nothing." -- Tom, denying Petey credit for mutual tutelage "Yeah, Spike, just shut up." -- Petey, silencing the amateur film historian to get schooled by Tom about Stanley Donen's little-seen gem, Hey, Cabbie [More to quotes come.] "Probably people sleeping, I guess." -- Melissa, noting the main attraction in Poland, Ohio "Well, give me another example of [...]
If you like noise rock and you live in or near New York City, the next week-and-a-half will melt your genitals clean off. You read right. The molten manmeat madness starts on Sunday, when Harvey Milk headlines the (now Tombs-less) Beasts Of The East festival at Club Europa in Brooklyn. The event starts at [...]

Ahhhhhhhhh! Big scary kitchen sink! Time once again for one of my internationally, supernaturally lauded Halloween mixes. The past couple years I've scoured the world-wide far-and for the best - well, the readily available and modestly acceptable - surf and psychobilly horror-themed tracks. This time around I've stitched autumn-appropriate chunks of this and that into one monstrous mush. Along with a bit of 'billy there's garage, funk, indie rock (yikes!), and a splattering of novelty tunes.* There're only two rules governing Halloween mixes: Any track with a "Bouahahahaha!" on it is [...]
