For those of you who don't know about MAP, it's a collection of music blogs from around the world who band together once a month to shed light on up-and-comers from their home countries. It's sort of like the WTO without the human rights violations. For the fifth MAP of 2012, we can't think of a better pick than the lovely solo work of Hundred Waters frontwoman Nicole Miglis. Her debut self-titled EP dropped a few months back and highlights, among her many talents, her stunning vocals and lyrics. Check out her song "Stay Small" below and [...]

Hundred Waters at DC9 here in DC. Of course they're killed it. (Taken with Instagram at DC9)

On their self-titled debut album, Hundred Waters perform the rare feat of crafting songs that are simultaneously incredibly melodic and challenging. I've seen their music described as "folktronica" a few times, but I think experimental pop (or "art pop") is a better descriptor of band's playful and complex use of rippling synths, syncopated drums, inventive harmonies and electronic flourishes. "Me & Anodyne" and "Boreal" are both standouts on the album, showcasing the band's ethereal tapestry of sounds. I'd suggest listening with good headphones and little distractions, otherwise it may be easy to miss all the complexities of these [...]

For bands, this will give you an idea of what degree of coordination, interplay and fluidity your own live sets should strive to achieve. Fans: now there's really no excuse to be shelling out $20 to see that random bedroom buzz band who sucks live - veto until they can perform like this. There's also no excuse to pay to see someone who's just gonna stand up there bobbing his head behind a laptop and make lame ass air-drumming movements - Shlohmo, I'm looking directly at you. Stay off the stage in the DJ booth where you belong. [...]

Whenever a band with a soft touch manages to be simultaneously challenging and catchy, the Dirty Projectors comparisons are gonna start getting thrown around. Hundred Waters surely does share some tendencies with Longstreth and the sirens, but this Florida quintet is up to something a bit different, bringing a patience and care to a sound that can best be described as folktronica. Caribou or even The Books might be more accurate precursors, but the more you try to define Hundred Waters, the more pigeon-holes open up. "Boreal" probably isn't the single of this album, but it demonstrates a lot of [...]

Every year I go to South By Southwest, there's always one band I come back from Austin that becomes a slight obsession. 20122s band was Hundred Waters . I escaped the melee that was 6th Street in Downtown Austin, hopped on my bike and pegged it up to 43rd Street, a decision justified by a gorgeous set from the Gainesville Florida band at their label's Elestial Sound showcase. Kaleidoscopic visuals and set up under billowing patterned sheets above their heads gave the gig a cocoon feel. When paired with the warm atmospherics of Hundred [...]

Hundred Waters - Caverns I came to the stark realization that I have yet to share a track from Hundred Waters outside of my latest mixtape earlier this year. Which I feel bad for. Honestly. Whenever I'm asked who my favorite band is, who am I listening to, or who I'm excited about, my answer has been Hundred Waters. Made up of formerly and sometimes backing band to fellow Gainsville, FL residents and terribly underrated Levek , Hundred Waters has crafted powerful intrepid melodies coupled with the angelic voices that from top to bottom make [...]

Hundred Waters - Visitor Hundred Waters - Me & Anodyne Charming, melodic goodness on this lil' self-titled album, courtesy of the lovely pack of G-ville folks also known as Hundred Waters. Locals who were smart enough to see these peeps when they performed at the March installment of the Rock The Park monthly concert series are probably already well acquainted with this multi-instrumental quintet's sparkling sounds. If not, think dreamy, whimsical indie-pop with layers of orchestral-like arrangements, atmospheric textures, [...]

musicvagabond : Hundred Waters - Me & Anodyne// I have to say that this is one of my favorite if not my over all favorite album to come out so far in 2012. It's hard to imagine that Hundred Waters has only been playing together for one year. It's so organic yet so polished and their live show is mesmerizing. They've hit it right on the nose in every single aspect. If you're like me and you can't get enough of lead singer Nicole Miglis' voice I have just [...]

Hundred Waters "Boreal" "Boreal" ends with singer Nicole Miglis assuring the listener that "a tale is not trite if it's still being told," which is oddly defensive, but keeping with the character of the piece. It is, after all, a song centered on a set of lyrics in which a novice traveler explains her reasons for traveling to the tundra. (Long story short, she wants to see a land stripped bare, and draw strength from what can survive the harsh climate.) The music is measured and precise in its contour and texture, like an elaborate panorama [...]

This year was my fourth South By South West and before I left for Austin, I was apprehensive about the festival's status as a relevant music event in its 26th year. Over 2,000 bands visit the Texas capital to try and advance their careers and I wondered why they bothered anymore? Was there actually worth in them playing? Any band who travel the large distance must have a profile, a buzz or are there to strike a deal on Texas soil to make it really worth their while. Bands that travel on blind faith and hope that something [...]
