NOTE: I didn't include singles for 2010 albums like "Cousins" and "Norway" because in my mind they are 2010 songs. So that's why they are not in the list. Also, I considered Local Natives a 2009 release since I was following them since last year and heard their album via the UK release. Similarly, that is why an album like the Rural Alberta Advantage has no songs on here. Because I included them in my list last year! 100 . People in general like to believe that some essence of themselves or loved ones continues after death. For some, ghosts provide both reassurance and fear. The Deadly Syndrome think it wouldn't be so bad to be a ghost, but Armor For Sleep think it sounds lonely. SXSW was a blast. The crowd was enthusiastic, the food was savory (thank you Pita Pit), and discovering new music in a live setting is definitely preferred over a computer screen. I'd just like to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who took the time to come out, we never expected to reach capacity so quickly! Also, an equal in size thank you goes out to Sneak Attack Media, Tierra Productions, UV Vodka and Hi-Lo for sponsoring the event as well as Honey Claws, Ninjasonik, TheDeathSet, The Hood Internet, DD/MM/YYYY, Fol Chen, Rumspringa, Cerebral Ballzy, The Hungry Villagers, Madi [...]

Hungry Villagers, Medeski Martin & Wood, Pete Doherty, and Children (of all things!), all have new, awesome albums out and tours coming your way. Here's a round up, apologies for not being able to devote a whole page to each of these deserving bands (the Tart is job hunting, grrrr)... but if/when they come through Chi-town, you know I'll give you the low-down on the show! Thursday, March 12, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: Actually, there's a few things to mention. The first is that I'm now on Twitter. Sign up to follow me immediately, as there will be a nice bit of important info pertaining to it next week. Secondly, Austin Sound has put up their yearly compilation. It, like the day party they're having, is beyond awesome. And lastly, we won second place at trivia last night (our team name was Britney's Beef Curtains: Volume 9). Deep breath. Now check [...]
More great stuff from the inbox. This past week brought a ton of wonderfully creative and/or animated videos, here are two of the best: 1) Flip books! Directed by Benjamin Weinstein the flipbooks "are actually real, using individual photos of the band in various poses and situations that were taken in a separate shoot. Those photos shot on film were translated into a set of images that were put to paper and assembled as flip books that recreated the band's performance scenes. Motion picture sequences [...]

The sound Hungry Villagers makes is not necessarily new. In fact, you can trace it, pretty specifically, to several bands. Yet despite all the derivatives you can sum up, it's hard to deny that their songs, like "Tree Full Of Ghosts" off their upcoming single, are pretty damn good. Hungry Villagers hints at modern influential greats like Interpol and The National, but naturally, they enhance the songs with elements that are their own. Where the deep oft-flat vocals have an Interpol-like sound, it's still unique to Hungry Villagers. [...]
The Hungry Villagers started with the Houck brothers. The brothers' lives have been fully saturated with music, starting in South Africa as children, when their parents preached and played gospel music to the local villages. Thus the Villagers were born, and now with the rhythmic backbone added by drummer Ferrick Hallaron IV, the band is complete. Hungry Villagers-Tree Full of Ghosts mp3

Hungry Villagers is a spanking new band out of Houston, TX formed by brothers Jacob, Abraham and David Houck. The guys spent part of their youth in South Africa with their parents who preached and played gospel music to the local villages (hence the band name). If they have more singles like this up their sleeves, we may just have a 2009 breakout band on our hands. Hungry Villagers will be playing THEFMLY.com Austin Blowout 2009 at SxSW on Thursday March 19 at HiLo (301 W. 6th Street). Hungry Villagers - Tree Full Of [...]
Here is an introduction to the Hungry Villagers. The band hails from Houston, Texas consisting of 3 brothers ( Abraham Houck, Jacob Houck, David Houck) and Ferrik Hallaron IV. The band describes themselves on their website with the following blurb: From the full and addictive beats arises the melody of two guitars strumming parts in perfect harmony. The voices of the Brothers Houck quickly follow suit, weaving a blanket of sound that lulls the surrounding crowd into a near hypnotic state: swaying and [...]
