DES A BODA – Ukrainian Pearl EP (in full)

DES A BODA – Ukrainian Pearl EP (in full) So the earlier post on DES A BODA was just to let you know about the single. Now, the Teen Daze -headed digital label Cultus Vibes has posted the full EP. The track below, Hunter/Gatherer is incredible. It picks you up with some heinous synth strings before the bass drops into a sort of pleasant bastardization of house. Then, the bass clears out for a little bit before swarming back in and pure dubstep carries you to the rest of the track where you wonder where you are for a second or two. [...]

ALLSORTS!! DAY 1

ALLSORTS!! DAY 1 Liquorice allsorts. Could they be the loveliest looking sweets going*? Like I know people can give or take the taste of liquorice, but who can deny how pleasing these sweets just look. Don't you want to jump into the middle of them and chuck them around the place? Or maybe get some glue and build little things out of them, like houses and trucks and turrets? I sure as hell know I do. Inspired by my favourite colourful and chunky sweets, I decided that this week the compost heap will be [...]

Pop Montreal Review: Hunter-Gatherer, October 1, Phonopolis

Pop Montreal Review: Hunter-Gatherer, October 1, Phonopolis Montreal - Free shows in record stores can be a good thing. For one thing, they're free. Another good thing is it gives you something to do before the band goes on - browsing for records. Back home in Toronto, I enjoy checking out shows at Sonic Boom or Soundscapes, so I figured why not check out a good indie music store in Montreal ? The real draw for this show was Braids , a Montreal band I caught this past summer and quite enjoyed. On the bill before them was Calgary's Hunter-Gatherer , who packed their barrage [...]

New Hunter-Gatherer 7″ – 'Pere Lachaise'/'Undergr owth'

New Hunter-Gatherer 7″ – 'Pere Lachaise'/'Undergr owth' Hunter-Gatherer's debut album I Dreamed I Was A Footstep In The Trail Of A Murderer was voted the fourth best Irish album of 2009 by readers of this blog and now he returns with a 73 on Osaka Records on August 27th. The two tracks are menacing slices of sparse electronica. 'Pere Lechaise' is the sound of someone following you down a dark city street or into a Parisian cemetery as the title suggests. Hunter-Gatherer - Pere Lachaise [...]

Body and Soul Gathering, Ballinlough Castle, Co. Westmeath

The Body and Soul Gathering is, as they put it themselves, the realisation of a dream and Ireland's most amazing secret garden. Based on the evidence of this scorching celebration of the Summer solstice, they've hit the nail pretty much on the head. Situated in the hidden environs of Ballinlough Castle, the Body and Soul idea will be familiar to thousands of those who have attended Electric Picnic over the years. This gathering is all about celebrating and expanding the ideas that made Body and Soul a highlight of every Picnic, in a truly unique kind of environment. The [...]

Hunter-Gatherer - Left For Dead

Hunter-Gatherer - Left For Dead Orbital remain the benchmark for thoughtful bleepages down our way. They were purveyors of albums with songs that only truly came alive in the context of their siblings. And that very thought struck me as I sat through Hunter-Gatherer's debut long player 'I Dreamed I Was A Footstep In The Trail Of A Murderer'. To look at it one way this could just be a collection of indistinct ambient asides but a bit of careful nurturing reveals a cerebral artist reinventing snivilisation. And the rewards are worth hanging in there for because although they never sound calculated the ideas always [...]
