There's a pub in the centre of Kells I hate to walk past. The outside of it is falling to shit. Diseased flaps of maroon paint peel from its sign and even on the warmest days streaks of dampness taper from below its windows. The outside walls are full of worryingly deep cracks which make me think the building itself is fucked beyond repair. It depresses me and symbolises something about the whole town at the moment. A shabby hopelessness. One out of five are unemployed in Kells now because we became a cliché from a David McWilliams essay, the [...]

Bringing the public polls to a close for another year we have a podcast consisting of the top Irish tunes of 2008, as voted by the readers of Nialler9. We decided not to announce a tracklisting for this one so that you'll have to listen to it to see who charted where. There are some surprises in there but I will say that songs from the likes of Hunter Gatherer, Lisa Hannigan and Jape all appeared. As for the other ten you'll just have to listen to Aoife count them down in our 54 minutes special. Go go. [...]

Take it from me, having a vastly more famous namesake can be a bit of a pain in the arse. In my case when the person in question happened to ply their trade as a centre forward for the football team I support was, during his spell there a cause of regular annoyance as I regularly had to explain that my love for Arsenal predated Ian Wright Wright Wright (I used to get that a lot too)'s arrival at Highbury. But I was never going to be a footballer, or a presenter of shitty lottery game shows so [...]

The Octopus Project plays at the Bluebird tonight. So Many Dynamos and Hunter Gatherer -- a new project featuring Robbie from Say Panther/Ghost of the Forest/many other bands -- also open. Here's what Kristy Wendt said about the headliners this week: Endemic to this instrumental band is unusual execution, and by juggling a handful of instrumental specialties, it produces compelling electronic tracks that retain all of their innocuous glory. Hello Avalanche beams up listeners with what might be the musical backdrop for a little alien boy's Sunday afternoon bicycle ride. [...]
I must commend Analogue on their recent free CD - most excellent stuff ( and I'm not the only one who thinks so ). In a recent freebie post , this song popped up twice as recommended by Paddy and Colly. 'Left for Dead' is one of those unassuming pieces of music which quietly invites itself for tea and within hours is cosily wrapped up in your favourite blanket in the living room. You don't mind though, as it brings calmness and warmth with it. It's snowing outside. I'm going to [...]
