Consider us excited. Earlier this year we were elated to find out that Hurray For the Riff Raff was opening for Bonnie 'Prince' Billy while we were in New Orleans. The show was fantastic . We returned home to Wisconsin with a copy of Hurray For the Riff Raff's brilliant new album, Young Blood Blues on vinyl. Since then, we've been fortunate to be in the position to bring the band to the Cactus Club in Milwaukee on Friday, October 8th . They're also playing Madison the [...]

Hurray for the Riff Raff release 'Young Blood Blues' For those who aren't familiar, welcome to the world of New Orleans based, three piece indie-folk/blues rockers, Hurray for the Riff Raff . The band started when a teenaged Alynda Lee Segarra began hopping trains, traveling across the country while learning to play banjo. Eventually she settled in New Orleans, and allowed music to take hold of her life. She quickly embraced the city's community of street musicians, who encouraged her to develop her banjo skills [...]

now i 'aint as bright as the sun when it shines ♫ Hurray For The Riff Raff - Slow Walk "Slow Walk" is a fitting song for Hurray For The Riff Raff's hometown of New Orleans. Strings, strumming, and soul abound on this on this heavy bit of front porch goodness that reminds us of the difficulty of recovery. Weighty subject matter aside, sometimes a little humidity soaked twang music is just the right thing on a hot summer day. Their LP Young Blood Blues is out now and [...]

Hurray for the Riff Raff. You don't run across band names like that every day. For those of you that have followed our site for some period of time, you've probably gathered that I have a real affinity towards any artist that can put pen to paper. Growing up, I purchased tapes/CD's and, if the liner notes didn't include lyrics, I was hugely disappointed. After buying a new album, I'd plop down on my bed and listen to the music with my finger following every printed word. I suppose that's what draws me to folk music. [...]

Depending on your preference, New Orleans can be laid back or rough and tumble. I've experienced both ends of the spectrum on my brief sojourn in the Crescent City. Most of yesterday was spent tracking down recommendations from friends that have previously navigated the Magazine Street and the Garden district, providing ample distraction from the seemingly never ending alcohol free-flowing party the city offers in the tourist areas. I had another distraction that no amount of Cafe Du Monde Beignets could relieve. I had a ticket to see Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and [...]

Their dusty melodies evoke images of a bygone era, one when Appalachia-bound immigrants brought over the folk tunes of their native lands and melted them into the pot that would become American folk.

Dark Dark Dark's Nona Marie Invie (accordion/keys/voice) and Marshall LaCount (banjo/voice) will be joined by Hurray for the Riff Raff's Walt McClements (accordion) for a special performance at the super intimate Sycamore on July 9. You know how I always say their shows make you think you're on some sort of a boat? Well prepare to sway and float on imaginary waves of far-reaching and heart-crunching dark-chocolate flavors of bitterness and sweetness of melodies and words (!), because it'll be Nona Marie's and Marshall's already superbly complimentary and forlorn voices booming in that [...]

It's springtime! It's Monday Mail! What is Monday Mail? How was your weekend? Mine was awesome. After a long, cold winter, it finally felt like spring here in the northeast. I spent lots of time outside and it was delicious. Now, to business. This week's MM comes from Kevin over at Cul-de-sac . He writes: I cannot talk up Hurray for the Riff Raff enough. They're incredible. Thought I'd toss this your way and see what you think. [...]

Admittedly, I'm not familiar with every single band involved in this year's SXSW festivities, officially or unofficially, though I did listen to well over two hundred bands I don't care to listen to ever again. Unlike them, the list compiled here includes twenty performers I think are most worth seeing, and for free, no less; as far as I know, all of them are either playing unofficial shows, or plan to play whatever last-minute gatherings that come their way. 20. Those Darlins This is the [...]
