Sometimes it's better to go out on a high note. Steve Schlitz's voice may sounds familiar. Perhaps you remember it from Longwave , where he was lead vocalist for the past ten years. Longwave had finished promoting their best album and like that, Steve decided to head out on a high note. The group is still together, but Steve is now Hurricane Bells . He used those creative juices from Secrets are Sinister to create an ethereal album founded on wispy vocals and reverb. Lots of it . [...]

Rising from the ashes of the currently on hiatus Longwave comes Hurricane Bells , the project of Longwave singer Steve Schlitz. Hurricane Bells just released their first album, Tonight is the Ghost , hot on the heels of their inclusion on the buzz worthy soundtrack to the second Twilight movie, New Moon. Going for a less obvious, more alt-country influenced sound than we heard with Longwave, Hurricane Bells tracks like "Freezing Rain" and "Winters in New York" are immediately appealing with dark charms and creeping melodies. Lead single "This Year" starts out contemplative and [...]

Capgun Coup: "Sitting on the Sidewalk" Enjoying the few songs I've heard from Capgun Coup's new album, Maudlin . Released last week from Team Love, the Omaha group spent some time in the famed Hotel Frank making some nice lo-fi, complemented with some cool 60s surf vibes. I thought of Birds of Avalon, Be Your Own Pet, The Vivian Girls and Times New Viking (gotta stop posting about them). Maybe they're all similar in style rather than substance. Check Capgun Coup here at Team Love and on [...]

Not really sure how we originally missed Hurricane Bells , the new solo project from Longwave lead singer/songwriter Steve Schiltz. The band/side project of Mr. Schiltz just released a debut album on Vagrant this week called Tonight Is The Ghost and we've really been enjoying what we hear. Before we make some time to give the album a proper review, check out this single "This Year". It starts as a bit of a slow burner and then slowly builds into a poppy little tune that won't be getting out of your head anytime soon. [...]

Asobi Seksu – Rewolf I've always liked what I've heard from Asobi Seksu , but I've also never gone out of my way to prioritize their music in my personal queue. No good reason for that, other than I simply have too much music to listen to, and I can't possibly give all of it the attention it deserves. I do try, but imperfect creature that I am it doesn't always turn out. Rewolf is a set of acoustic reworkings of the band's previous material, which should prove interesting given their typically [...]
My first CMJ Music Marathon was a fun-tastic one. Most of my CMJ-ing was done @ Pianos, a great little venue on historic Ludlow St. I've discovered at least half a dozen promising new bands (Seven Saturdays, Warpaint, Deastro, Peggy Sue, Jeff The Brotherhood , Hurricane Bells, Pete & The Pirates, Choir Of Young Believers) which will [...]

The Soundtrack is out now, and well worth picking up. It tickles me pink that 12 year old paris hilton clones are going to be flicking their nubs to this music. Kudos to the Twilight people for going relatively indie on this soundtrack. Our young generation desperatly needs a jolt. Photo by Mayumi Nashida On November 10, Vagrant Records will be releasing Tonight Is The Ghost digitally, the debut album from Brooklyn-based Hurricane Bells . This is a new project from Longwave frontman Steve Schiltz, the singer and guitarist for the band for over ten years. While the band remains intact, this album came about in the last year when Schiltz recorded the songs on his MacBook in his basement, literally by himself. Some songs were fully crafted within the past 18 months, while others are newly architected from [...]
Today's SOTD is "Monsters" by Hurricane Bells from The Twilight Saga: New Moon (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Hurricane Bells, an unsigned band from Brooklyn, played at CMJ this past Friday at Pianos. I really like their sound, take a listen to this track and if you like it too head over to iTunes and purchase [...]

Reviewing this album is bittersweet for me. For one thing, I hate all the hullabaloo that Twilight has brought along with it. It's taken over so much of the media lately, and I've been sick of it since it started. When I saw the list of artists that were contributing to the Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack , my heart sank. Not because they were bad, but because they were oh so good, and the fact that they'd jumped on the Twilight bandwagon irked [...]
