Not much is made of good band names these days, with emphasis only on the bad and the irrefutably ugly but Savages , the moniker of a menacing, quite precariously hyped London four-piece currently spewing charisma and gusto out from the doorways of dimly lit haunts, is a fucking brilliant one. Mint Julep launches "I Never Wanted You" into the atmosphere with their beautiful cover of Headphones' seminal track. The Portland husband-wife duo creates subtle tension in the track with singer Hollie Kenniff's unaffected, soft vocals and bubbling instrumentation. Lyrically, it is an angry anthem for your ex with lines like "Baby, I was faking the whole time." Kenniff's detached singing style stands in contrast with the words, creating an interesting dynamic with the song's biting nature. HUSBAND is a duo made of Gianlorenzo and Chiara from Bologna, Italy. I got into the band through the Soft Metals remix of their first cut "Love Song." I dug how catchy it was, so I sought out the original. Plus, any band with such dark sensibilities are bold for taking on such a title, one to me that will always be associated with the Disintegration album and R. Smith. But Husband takes it in a whole other direction with steady, reliable microKorg and a drummer who pounds on the floor toms standing up, tranced out, and just fucking feeling [...]
While their meaning and significance seemingly reduces with every passing day, there is still something a little bit special about a bands debut single . Despite there no longer being the market there was once was for them in terms of sales and revenue, a bands first single can still be used in the same way as it always has been; not just as an introduction to the band but also a statement of their intent.
