so i've done two volumes of this "songs featuring felines" thing, but i've never actually had a feline of any sort. well... tomorrow that will change. we're getting a kitten! i wasn't too keen on the idea at first, but i guess i'm starting to come around. i don't know what we're gonna call it yet, though i've got plenty of great (unappreciated) ideas. so i figured i should make a playlist to welcome the kitten home. unlike past volumes, several of these songs really don't feature felines too much at all... they are [...]

The next two Pitchfork articles feature the flowering of US Alt-Rock; these are the bands that your favourite bands love. From early '90's staples like The Pixies and Nirvana, to more recent bands like The Hold Steady and even the likes of Fleet Foxes, they were hugely influenced by the next six bands. I've split this article in two, so that you don't have a 2,000 word behemoth to trawl through 1 . Sonic Youth – Death Valley '69 Hüsker Dü – Pink Turns to Blue Meat Puppets – Plateau Of the [...]

What the fuck has happened to this summer? It took me almost four years to shake Mark Kozelek (aka Sun Kil Moon)'s cover of Modest Mouse's "Ocean Breathes Salty" as my all purpose embrace-the-bummer song, only to be replaced by his wistful skew on Hüsker Dü's ode to carefree youth. Kozelek's Lost Verses Live is now available on Caldo Verde . I feel hungover and old like, all the time, guys. Mark Kozelek "Celebrated Summer" (Hüsker Dü Cover)
The Dream Syndicate found whatever was in Sister Lovers and Tonight's The Night still breathing in L.A. in 1984 and used it to make Medicine Show , still a nervous and wild local classic. Guitarist-singer Steve Wynn will perform the album in its entirety tonight with his band the Miracle 3. He speaks now from a quiet park in New York. This interview by Chris Ziegler.
BLOWOFF dance party with Bob Mould and Rich Morel blows up Vinyl on the Fourth of July 4
I'll be honest. I'm still working on my summer mix of course but one quick gander and sure enough there is some good stuff out there. Heather from Fuel Friends never dissapoints with her take. I'm not quite sure where she finds the freakin' time but she is the hot one third from the left above. Vinyl district has a few choice tracks to grab. Mars needs guitars also has a good set of summer songs. Anyway here are some to add to your mix not in any particular order, rhyme or reason other [...]

We busted our cherry last nite and left a musical legacy. Caterwaul Of Sound hit the recording studio . We laid down the tracks for our soon to be hit single The Love Theme to Kids Go To The Woods, Kids Get Dead . Most of the band, being noobs to the studio scene, were fascinated with the process. Scratch tracks? Overdubs? Multiple takes???? Crazy man, crazy. And the biggest debate took place over what the "secret backwards [...]
What's your preferred vocal style? And what vocal style or trend makes your skin crawl? Sure, most of us will be charitable and say we're catholic in our tastes, that we like all sorts of singing styles. But, come on, let's be honest, there's always one to which we are drawn, one that if we went through our music collection, we'd realize we've been choosing over others. Or perhaps it's easier to know what we don't like. For myself, and with few exceptions, I can't stand vocals that are wispy and fey. They [...]

They give birth astride of a grave. The light gleams an instant, then it's night once more. - Samuel Becket, "Waiting for Godot" Toonage: Husker Du - Hardly Getting Over It (live 1985 Minneapolis) The Nomads - You're Gonna Miss Me The Pixies - In Heaven (live BBC) The Miracle Workers - One Step Closer To You
I was a little young to partake in the glory of the American hardcore heyday during the early to mid-1980s. But that didn't stop me from joining the party late in the game.

Grant Hart (x-Husker Du, x-Nova Mob) is playing a rare solo show Monday night at The Bell House. Grant has a new album in the can and it is his first since 1999's Good News for Modern Man . The new disc was recorded in Montreal with members of A Silver Mt. Zion and Godspeed You! Black Emperor and in Minneapolis with members of Rank Strangers and Fat Kid Wednesdays. The first track from this release, "School Buses Are For Children", is streaming on Grant's MySpace page . Based on [...]

When I was a kid I remember NME (or maybe Melody Maker?) awarding this track the 'Single of the week' accolade and rewording it to 'Single of any week'. That is so right, as it's probably the best thing Bob Mould ever did - and that is some compliment! Sugar - Tilted

We don't have to talk to you about the importance of the importance of Michael Azerrad's Our Band Could Be Your Life. If you know, you know. If you don't, no amount of expounding on our part would help you to get it. For me, that book distilled all of the things I want to be as a rock critic: informed, eloquent, concise and cool as hell. I wasn't hip enough (or old enough) to hear Big Black or Mission of Burma the first time around. Azerrad pointed the way for me, and, I imagine, countless others, to [...]

Some festival-lineup additions: The Flaming Lips-curated All Tomorrow's Parties festival, set for September in upstate New York, has added Deerhoof, the Boredoms, and a set where No Age plays an entire Husker Du LP (with a "special guest" on lead vocals), as well as a few other acts. Meanwhile, the Pitchfork Music Festival has added a bunch of acts to the list of artists taking the stage in July, and it includes the awesome noise spectacle Ponytail, as well as the mysterious DOOM and hometown stalwarts Dianogah. Stuff to look forward to is nice, right?

I'm 19. I'm not 35. Husker Du 's Zen Arcade , New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig were all released before I was even conceived, but I still think, know, and believe that Bob Mould is a legend. Life And Times is classic Mould: rushing guitars and angsty lyrics delivered in his classic bulldog skin of a voice. While few will likely complain about the lack of vocoder this time around, Mould's continued growth and experimentation [...]
Bob Mould was the guitarist and singer of Hüsker Dü and Sugar before striking out on his own solo career and Dean Spunt and Randy Randall are the L.A. duo No Age. We asked them to interview each other after they played NoisePop together and before they both played Coachella. This is the complete version of this interview.

My hopes of escape were dashed by logistical problems. How to displace the Nomad clan, sell the present oasis & find another one (hundreds of miles to the snowy north); swapping suburban for quasi-rural; uprooting the Princess and Jr (teen and tween respectively) and throwing them into a maelstrom of newkiditis. Plus the uncertainty that any new venture presents...though weighed against current reality, not quite the leap of faith it once was. But things work out for a reason, as we console ourselves with that rubbish. And I seem [...]
This is the week that so many people, celebrate vindication and freedom courtesy of an angry diety and rebirth through sacrifice. Enjoy whatever rituals you prefer. Just remember, it's all in fun, until someone loses an eye (or worse). Toonage: Husker Du - New Day Rising (Live Trenton NJ 1985) The Cramps - Swing The Big Eyed Rabbit Bounty Hunters - Bunnies The [...]
