There's "spring break" and then there's Electro Beach PV. For months we've been telling you about Electro Beach, the spring break music festival that's bringing huge DJs like Avicii, Chuckie, Steve Aoki, and Dada Life to Puerto Vallarta for six weeks of college partying madness. We were lucky enough to take a week off from reality to party south of the border, and were given unfettered access at the clubs and events. We went to crazy venues, saw amazing lighting and sound productions, got to hang out with some awesome DJs — and of course we kept [...]

Hyde : The Cape of Storms Hyde : The Cape of Storms (Last Quarter Mix) [ purchase ] So where do I sail? A ship losing control, My cries swallowed up, lost in the raging sea. So where has love gone? Will I ever reach it? The Cape of Storms echoes the pain I feel inside. You can't really call this [...]

I've always assumed that the simple answer is probably the wrong one. There is a human tendency, I think, to try to seek out nuance, or to search for hidden depths – even where, perhaps, none exist. If something seems blindingly obvious, it's probably wrong. Sometimes, though, the most obvious observation is actually the most accurate. And so it is with Hyde & Beast . Slow Down sounds like The Beatles. It's undeniable. In fact, I don't think the band are trying to deny it; it's so blindingly, unbelievably clear, [...]

Hyde & Beast 's album 'Slow Down' is a collection of deceptively simple, dreamy psychedelic pieces. There are some obvious comparisons with Sgt. Pepper arrangements and vibe, with reverse tape loops, droning sitar, parping horns and dreamy, double-tracked vocals; an eagle ear might notice the Sunderland accents in place of Liverpudlian ones. The muted bass on lead single "Never Come Back" is an exact copy of Paul McCartney's: impressive attention to detail. '(and the) Pictures In The Sky', the album's only cover, is an unashamed T. Rex rip-off in terms of structure and sound. [...]

It's something of a cliché to denigrate the musical abilities of drummers, stretching back to the old "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world? He not even the best drummer in the Beatles!" joke, and probably far further than that. The drummer is more often than not the most wacky and unhinged member of their respective bands, the zenith of such virtues being the crazed and ultimately self-destructive antics of Keith Moon, who did very little to inhibit the stereotype of drummers as party fiends - out on the town while their peers are back in the [...]
Hyde & Beast offer a pocket full of laid back songs from their debut album 'Slow Down'; a solid group of gentle psychedelic blues pop tracks
So, a band that consists of drummers. Surely the first thing I should mention is the expectancy behind the album, that it should be a wall of noise filled with elongated drum solos, right? Wrong. The debut album from Sunderland band Hyde & Beast is one to be viewed under its own merit, but it certainly shows that drummers can do plenty more than pull faces and hit things really hard! The band brings together David Hyde (The Futureheads drummer) and his "beast", ex-Golden Virgins drummer Neil Bassett. However, you need to know nothing of the [...]

Reference Points gives some of our favourite new artists the opportunity to tell us about something that has had an impact on their work - whether that is a song, a band, a date, a pair of shoes, or an entire country. This week: '60s-loving psychy duo Hyde & Beast - who couldn't keep it to one influence, so they kindly gave us two. Fleance - Third Ear Band It's like a medieval Velvet Underground song! I first came across this song on a psychedelic compilation album put [...]

I tend to think as drum solos mostly as an opportunity to go to the bar. Sure they're impressive, but ultimately dull, like juggling or finger-skating or making a major scientific breakthrough - no one cares. So you'd think there's nothing worse than a drummer going solo, but it happens quite often, Phil Collins did it, Ringo Starr did it, and more recently Phil Selway and apparently Travis Barker. What happens less is drummers going duo, which is the case with Hyde & Beast, a kinda bluesy indie outfit consisting of Futurehead's drummer David Hyde and ex-Golden Virgin's drummer Neil... [...]
Gals & pals, get your reading glasses out for this one, and if you don't own a pair get on out and buy some anyways, cause you won't want to miss out on a single word of this post. Throughout my surfing ventures across the vast web, i haven't yet stumbled upon an intriguing portrayal of Toronto's electronic scene, so i decided to take it upon myself to paint you one right here and now. I proudly bring you a Taste of Toronto. This post consists of the following parts; A Bassmentality review, a recent Toronto Pool [...]

Hyde & Beast is the sound of David Hyde from The Futureheads and Neil Bassett from Golden Virgins indulging themselves in a bit of nostalgia. 'Slow Down' was apparently influenced by their love of late 60s and early 70s rock, and the press release mentions Velvet Underground and T Rex. Quite where these art/glam influences appear on the album is not clear, as this is simply 11 tracks of innocuous country-edged blues. Opener 'Never Come Back' sets the tone of the album – simultaneously jaunty and morose with an economical approach to vocals, which means you don't have [...]
