We finally say goodbye to January, and wave hello to February. This week starts off slowly with a highly anticipated show at the Crocodile with the very talented Alabama Shakes and guests Quiet Life . If you can't get into that one, check out The Family Crest , who wrap up a month-long residency in Seattle, with Valley Fair , and Brite Lines at the Tractor. On Thursday, a couple of KEXP favorites: Nada Surf and Say Hi also play at the Tractor, and on Friday, Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra, [...]

One of our favorite NW bands, Hypatia Lake, are set to release their latest LP, Ouroboros, on 11/11/11. The album is chock full of some freakishly heavy sci-fi-delic grooves that will melt your brain. You can stream and/or purchase it (available in digital format and psychedelic orange swirly vinyl) over on their Bandcamp page . Check out the first track, Star Eater. Hypatia Lake; Star Eater

Seattle's psychedelic astronauts, Hypatia Lake, have dropped a couple tracks from their latest LP, Ouroboros, over on their Soundcloud page. Check one of the new tracks below. This is Digital Minds. Digital Minds by hypatialake

One of our favorite NW bands is Seattle based Hypatia Lake. We took the road trip up to Seattle to watch them headline the show at The Jewelbox last night. The trio rolled through a mesmerizing set of their brand of neo-psychedelic shoegazing spacerock and confirmed why they are one of our favorite bands. Lance Watkins on guitar, Randall Skrasek on bass, and Dave Foley on drums melted and blew minds with effects heavy riffs, driving beats, swelling feedback, and sonic storytelling. Hypatia Lake have released three LP's and are scheduled to release their fourth soon. If you haven't checked [...]

Even if there wasn't a trio of solid local bands (Hypatia Lake, The Quiet Ones, The Kindness Kind) tuning up their strings right now in anticipation for tonight's show at The Crocodile, I'd still be excited. Even if LMFAO and LFO and NOFX were on the bill for tonight's show at The Crocodile, I'd still be excited. Even if the doors to the storied Crocodile swung open and there was an empty stage, I'd still be excited. Because The Crocodile, my favorite Seattle venue of all time is reopening tonight. I'm trying to recall the [...]

Beware Captain Hook! The Croc Chomps Once More As previously reported , The Crocodile Cafe is reopening . If you didn't hear, the story went like this: after closing down in 2007 due to financial difficulties we were sad. Now we have to be sad no longer! The reopening festivities begin thursday and consist of two [...]

Wellie well kiddies, looks like the verdict is in on the show to reopen the Crocodile. The bad new is , we were all waaaaayyy off with our list of hopes and dreams. The GOOD news is this Mamma Jamma is FREE!!! Here's the lineup: . The Kindness Kind Hypatia Lake The Qu . It's more of dress rehersal than anything, though I have to say that this [...]
The speculation can (finally) end now for who will be playing the first nights at The Crocodile. It was just announced today that the club will open with two free shows of excellent local bands on Thursday and Friday. read more
Among other things, today's column talks about the closing of the King Cobra and what those folks have put together for tonight. read more
King Cobra is taking the neighborhood down with it with its Last Bash this Friday, tomorrow. Doors around 4pm, Pain Cocktail should go on around 5pm. This will be a historic, ear-shredding, mind-bending musical assault of death on all that is good and pure on Capitol Hill. Huh? Neon Nights All Bets On Death The Altar Boys Flexx Bronco The [...]

Poster by James Key I love a good festival. I love a ton of bands all packed in to one place, and I absolutely love the thrill of discovery sure to blindside you at any festival worths it densely powdered elephant ears and cheap, overpriced beer. Now, I'm not even in Seattle this weekend, but friend and Abandoned Love Records guru Jon Rooney has been plying me with the sweetness that is this weekend's Cumulus Music Festival for weeks now. Rooney, he of Virgin of the Birds fame (and a mammoth interview I've still [...]

Written by Fense My love, how I miss thee. Were I capable of poetry, words would stream onto the page like none other. They would cover it front to back, emphasizing how I hate being away from your side each and every week, away from your scent and away from you arms. It is a curse. A travesty! And I am stricken. Love will make you do crazy things, like miss the Cumulus Music Festival, which debuts on the streets of Seattle tomorrow and features Beast, Please Be Still [...]

I'll admit it, what first drew me to checking out Seattle's Hypatia Lake, was my initial misreading of their name. "Hyapatia Lee, everyone's favorite Native American '80s porn star, has a new CD out?!," thought I. Well, as interesting a project as that undoubtedly would be, Hypatia Lake has put together something inarguably more out there with their sophomore release, Angels and Demons, Space and Time . For those of you who aren't hip to the band (because everyone knows the porn star, right?), Hypatia Lake is a made-up community and all the songs revolve [...]
