The seventh edition of the current season of Later...With Jools Holland is also, surprisingly and disappointingly, its final one. Over forty acts have performed live over the course of this short season. This Tuesday's show features the usual mix of established and up-and-coming musicians from all over the world This week's blast from the past is The Prenders. The one constant member of the group over the years has been the group's lead singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter, Chrissie Hynde. She hails from Akron, Ohio, and was a student at Kent State University when the [...]

Nomo are a raucous nine-plus piece band from Ann Arbor, Michigan. They've been knocking around on the periphery for a while, covering the Newsom and releasing a couple of albums on Ubiquity, getting a bit of blog coverage last year for Ghost Rock . The next offering is Invisible Cities . They describe themselves as "post-afrobeat dance explosion". Although I'm not sure about the 'post' bit, as I think it's really lashed inextricably to Fela , not really diverging to go 'post' his tried and tested afro-swagger. The afrobeat dance explosion however, is very accurate. [...]

Hot off the presses this morning from across the pond - Blur have announced the roster of bands who'll join them in Hyde Park for their highly anticipated reunion gigs this July. Among the chosen ones are Crystal Castles , Vampire Weekend , Foals and more. The band gave the official word to NME this morning, and the hand-picked line-ups for the two nights are as follows: July 2 features Foals, Crystal Castles, Friendly Fires and Hypnotic Brass [...]
At least one thing is for sure as it relates to Blur 's upcoming reunion shows: the legnedary British quarter knows what's in. In support of its two-day stint at London's Hyde Park (July 2 and 3), the band has hand-picked eight, yes eight, openers, all of whom you've probably heard of. According to Gigwise.com , Foals , Crystal Castles , Hypnotic Brass Ensemble , and Friendly Fires will join Blur for its July 2nd performance, while Vampire Weekend , Deerhoof , Florence and the Machine , and Amadou [...]

Take a look here at the upcoming release schedule for Honest Jon's, and if you're anything like me you'll have started setting funds usually allocated for food aside to get the whole lot. Candi Staton's new record is out today which is always a cause for celebration, and the Marvellous Boy, "World Is Shaking" and the new Simone White releases all look like they're going to be amazing. And hopefully their release of a Hypnotic Brass Ensemble primer, featuring rerecorded versions of their self-released material, will bring the band to a wider audience over here. [...]
The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are eight horn-playing sons of Phil Cohran, trumpeter and sometime member of the Arkestra and AACM. That is a big enough draw on its own, right? Apparently not: Afrobeat legend Tony Allen was on the ticket too, having played with the HBE at an Honest Jon's event last year. [...]

Photo Via New York Times Zimbabwe native and ex-Stylus scribe Andrew Iliff knows more about African music than Vampire Weekend. He also rocks better sunglasses. The house lights finally dimmed, the final stragglers in their places, a single spot lit up over the stage at the Avery Fisher Hall in New York City, illumining a women named Kokanko Sata warming up her kamelen n'goni. Leaning over, a friend whispered to me, "Look how much potential energy there is on stage!" In the spilt glow of [...]
Catchdubs killed this one! And the horns of course are tremendous. Play it in an ultra lounge or something I guess. Check out the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble if you don't know. war-f-freeway-jay-z-and-beanie -sigel.mp3
Alright, a big shout out to SoulStrut for the tip off here (yes, you can find me lurkin on them forums). Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is of the same ilk as YoungBlood Brass Band - the equation is a tight horn section with the backup of funky percussion (mostly instrumental). Not to sell them short [...]
On Saturday we were stupid enough to go Christmas shopping at the same time as several million other people. Weirdly, the song we heard most was Art Of Noise's Moments In Love. The calmdown classic seems to be rampant consumerism's unofficial theme song. It reminded us that top FOP Nick Catchdubs relaunched his awesome blog a few weeks back with links to a Hypnotic Brass Ensemble live show and a great cover of that song. Then on the way home we listened to the excellent new Fabric Live mix from Caspa and Rusko and remembered that the former recently put [...]
