Somewhere, somehow, one of the old Altered Zones editors will see this video. When he does, he might like it so much that it will cause him to roll around in his grave in the shape of a Lamborghini VHS Cassette Rewinder. You can buy them at thrift store Mortuaries in Highland Park. I wrote about I Come to Shanghai in October . I liked them then. I still like them now. Maybe it's because Robert Ashley continues to tell me in every e-mail that this time I will hear the Organized Noize influence. I still [...]

I Come to Shanghai have never even been to Shanghai. At least, not to my knowledge. They formed in Oakland and moved to Georgia last year to work on music full-time and earn access to Waffle House 24-7. Georgia is probably the furthest you can possibly get from China. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the dry counties there started enacting laws banning Chinese food. This is, of course, a lie. No matter how xenophobic you are, or how many senators you elect named Saxby, no one can have a problem with wonton soup. This is my explanation for [...]

Athens based I Come to Shanghai has released a summer jam in October. That means it's just in time to get out the bourbonade, put on the rose-colored glasses and reminisce about the summer of 2011. This one is dripping with pop and synth sounds so share and download via soundcloud below and donate to keep these wizards going through the winter. In Your Own Way by IComeToShanghai

Dream-pop tracks can be truly sensational, however my main gripe with a fairly sizable proportion of them is in their length, choosing to opt for short and snappy rather than slow burning and epic. Thankfully, this new track from Athens duo I Come To Shanghai opts for my preferred approach, mixing the surf induced vibes of Braids with a trained ear for vocal harmonies. Download In Your Own Way below, and head over to the I Come To Shanghai bandcamp to check out an official remix of the track by [...]

Robert Ashley et Sam Frigard forment le bien nommé duo I Come To Shanghai auteur en juillet dernier d'un premier EP, Eternal Life vol.1 .

With an undergoing atmospheric feel and synths that could literally have been sampled from some American TV series in the late 80-s, it was pretty obvious that we completely fell in love with this gorgeous new single of Georgia duo I Come To Shanghai — and we think you will too. It was only back in June that the two friends dropped their first release, Eternal Life Vol. 1 on Bandcamp, finally followed up by "In Your Own Way" yesterday. No particular information about an upcoming EP or full-lenght just yet, but I sure hope we won't [...]

i come to shanghai - "love shark" (download) I Come To Shanghai is a hard band to describe. They sort of have their own thing going on. Sam Frigard and Robert Ashley moved from Oakland, CA in 2010 to Atlanta, GA where they could focus on their synth-based, somewhat psychedelic music full time. The result is their recently-released Eternal Life, Vol 1 record. These guys are both extremely talented, and deserve a lot more attention than they get. You can [...]

Eternal Life Vol. I is a 21 minute album spanning a number of pieces (tracklist below) that stretch into each other. I Come to Shanghai has enjoyed a dedicated fan base since their first full length album established a style of experimental electronic driven music with catchy vocal harmonies. Eternal Life Vol. I begins with a sophisticated layering of synths and vocal harmonies. At 1:40 a low bass note joins in and transitions the track into a instrumental interlude during which new synth layers are added and others removed. The transition at [...]

Oakland's I Come To Shanghi has followed its self-titled, 2009 debut with a mini-LP that I hope sees a sequel soon: Eternal Life Vol. 1 . It's a jittery synth rock release, built of several tracks that feature seamless and psychedelic transitions. Seeing where the duo takes things next makes it worth sticking around and hearing the next idea these guys cook up. Stream the entire thing above, and buy it via a pay-whatever-you-would-like-to -pay basis on icometoshanghi.com .

Athens, Georgia psych pop duo I Come To Shanghai are prepping their second record, Eternal Life Vol. 1 , for release July 13th . The duo is taking a long form approach to the Flaming Lips meets Piper at the Gates-era Pink Floyd sound they explored in three to five minute bursts on their 2009 self-titled debut ( which is totally worth checking out ). Eternal Life Vol. 1 is the first in a serialized collection of releases the duo will be producing in the near future. Check out the synthed out opening track from Vol. [...]

What ties together NPR, Robert Ashley, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Podcasting, Jason Evangelho, and Insomnia Radio? I Come To Shanghai ! Not really, but read on... Ok, follow along if you dare. Robert Ashley used to write words for Electronic Gaming Monthly until the excellent magazine tanked. He then turned his creative energy to " A Life Well Wasted ," an NPR style podcast about the culture of video games, with a quality bar so high this network nor most others can never hope to even glimpse it. [...]
Over the last few weeks, Pete and I have been busying ourselves with a new football super blog called Paperback Mitre . Please check it out if you're interested following our highs and lows through this new season. There is also small music section that will feature some songs that we enjoy. Football and music- it'll never work. I've posted three songs already, so for the sake of completeness, I will repeat myself here for ALE readers. Memory Cassette are a mystery. They are either a collection of [...]

Nurses - "Bright Ideas" I was at the ballet tonight, I went alone despite trying desperately to bring Thomas along. He is completely consumed with work and is only melancholic and distant when taken away from it so I decided against pressing the matter. Even though it's the first snowfall tonight and the city is swirling with holiday gasps and bristles, and it's so beautiful that I can't imagine anything else I'd like to do than share that with him. But so it goes sometimes. I sat in the orchestra section, and in the row in [...]

I don't often get to my emails. However, I Come to Shanghai sold me on checking out this tune with the inclusion of one phrase: "Deerhoof, for example, is pretty much our favorite modern rock band." That's a pretty good way to get my attention. Downside is, now that it's been used, I'll be less [...]
I got a promo CD the other day with the above image, and for some reason I knew it'd be a winner. "Dark side of the taco," I thought... "Brilliant," I thought. I try not to judge books by their covers, but it's a system that's much more accurate with indie music releases. I can disregard albums with close-up headshots by some barely talented singer-songwriter, and it's just as easy to notice the crazy ones-- the ones that most likely don't suck, when 90% of the pool of promo CDs we get do.
