The Indiecision Five at 5 is our attempt at sharing our musical tastes with you, and showcasing music from around the world. Each weekday at 5pm sharp, one NH7 writer or staffer will bring you five songs he/she is listening to on the day. Today, Neehar V. is your DJ. Check it. 1. Vampire Weekend - 'Diane Young' A marked departure from their usual twee, indie-pop, ivy-league-college-referencing fare, Vampire Weekend debuted 'Diane Young' at SXSW. Bluesy and heavily influenced by retro rock, with Ezra Koenig crooning lines such as "Baby, baby, [...]

The Warped Tour found a new home in San Francisco this year, parking itself in Lot A of AT&T Park. Like its old home at Pier 30/32, there was a view of the water, and the Bay Bridge. Unlike Pier 30, there was not plenty of room to move around. This running of the Warped [...]

SHARPLESS | Photo by Killian Young In today’s changing music industry, nice guys finish first. These guys have a new name: “beta males.” Through their uniqueness, beta males build rapport with their listeners on a level alpha males can never achieve because they’re too concerned with themselves. “There’s less and less room for people who want to make average music for average people,” says Brian Mazzaferri, lead singer for Chicago alternative band I Fight Dragons . “[There are] a lot more rising places for people who want to [...]
Back in November, we launched a contest with Moviestorm to give fans a chance to make an official music video for I Fight Dragons ' "Working". Not just any video either - an animated video. Contestants were given access to Moviestorm 's fully unlocked animation suite where they had a movie studio's worth of props, actors, sets, and camera capabilities. The votes are in, I Fight Dragons have chose their favorite video, and the top five entrants are all winners with their own fully unlocked copies of Moviestorm, the virtual movie studio. [...]
Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed. • The Tribune’s Bob Gendron attended this weekend’s sold-out Morrissey show at the Congress and was particularly struck by the British singer's flair for the dramatic. • Gapers Block captured some excellent photos from The Joy Formidable's appearance at the Metro last Wednesday night. • Time Out Chicago’s music editors Brent DiCrescenzo and Areif Sless-Kitain [...]

Since the Chicago band released their Atlantic Records debut, Welcome To The Breakdown , in 2010, they’ve been soundtracking sessions of Battletoads & Double Dragon for nostalgic gamers everywhere. Their major label debut LP is finally on its way, and we’ve got a premiere listen at one of the tracks. “Save World [...]

There are many types of geeks out there: you’ve got your comic geeks (that’d be me), your D&D geeks, video game geeks, music geeks (that’d be us), and the whole lot. When two of a geek’s pleasures find themselves intertwined, it’s the definition of geekgasm. Enter chiptune rockers I Fight Dragons , a band built for those of us who still gush over how badass the original Contra was on NES. With two EPs, including last year’s Welcome To The Breakdown , under their belts, I Fight Dragons are finally [...]

I am a Grinch during the holiday season, no doubt about it. Decorative trees that take time to prepare, AND time to disassemble; figuring out what hot game your cousin (twice removed?) is into that season, and to that end, on what console; negotiating which family to visit during the time you're allotted off from work. Scrooged quotes dance inside my head, because mocking your icons just is a ROFL waffle away in our digital world. Adulthood made me this way. At a certain age, you no longer sit down and write wish lists. Instead, you stand idly [...]
