I See Hawks in L.A. have released five critically acclaimed albums of classic Americana since they began writing songs in their Echo Park living rooms 11 years ago. The band's sound layers Southern California psychedelia over acoustic guitars and rich vocal harmonies. Meanwhile, fans have always treasured the Hawks' acoustic shows, where Rob Waller's rich voice, the band's subtle guitar arrangements, and the dark, literate lyrics take the spotlight. A three-year one-mic acoustic series hosted by the band at Cole's bar in downtown L.A., and memorable acoustic shows all over the U.S. with Ray Wylie Hubbard, [...]

Tom Brosseau and John C. Reilly photo by Kate Rentz The New L.A. Folk Festival put together a cozy Louvin Brothers tribute show at HM157 featuring covers of Louvin classics by an array of L.A. folk-inspired bands. Fort King started the night off a little rocky by cutting a song in the middle when singer Ryan Fuller could not hear his guitar, but the crowd would have preferred he just play through to keep the vibe magical and not stall. When you're only playing two songs, it seems like you gotta be a trooper and keep [...]
I See Hawks in L.A. play modern country music with beautiful harmonies and witty, cerebral tunes.

Throwback California country-rock This Los Angeles country-rock group's anthology re-imagines Big Star's hopeful album title #1 Record as a joshing (or perhaps wishful) look back through a catalog that wasn't really likely to find broad commercial fortune. A decade in the making – the band formed in 2000 – the songs cherry-pick the group's four previous releases, adding an early demo, two previously unreleased tracks, and three new recordings. The band's combination of tight country harmonies, shuffling rhythms, road-inspired topics, and flights of fiction mark them as natural-born [...]

[In between all the Grammy prepping and posturing, there is a massive amount of live music to enjoy. Don't know where to start, really, except to wish Justin Timberlake a happy birthday on Sunday — maybe he can take home one of those cute gramophone trophies from the big awards show ...] Tonight: The big stuff has LL Cool J at the Key Club, Herb Alpert at Disney Hall, Chris Cornell at the sold-out Troubadour, the Fray at the [...]
Before this interview, I See Hawks in L.A. and L.A. RECORD co-founded the Four Guys for Peace organization, which is dedicated to promoting friendship and brotherhood worldwide by combining strangers with beers. The first meeting was held in Union Station. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

January 26th will see the release of Shoulda Been Gold the fifth album from Californian country-rockers I See Hawks in LA, a 17 track tongue-in-cheek greatest hits collection that takes in tunes from the bands previous albums as well as five new tracks, so you get the best of both worlds as the band, Rob Waller (guitar , lead vocals), Paul Lacques (guitar, vocals), Paul Marshall (bass, vocals) and Shawn Nourse (drums), take you on a 80 minute Cosmic American ride through their song repertoire old and new. There's no Olin in Olin and the Moon , but there's plenty of good-natured lunacy. Cherubic frontman David LaBrel, 22, moved to L.A. over three years ago from Sun Valley, Idaho, and older brother Travis, along with drummer Marshall Vore, soon followed. But it took a while for the newbies to find bassist Kyle Vicioso and slide guitarist Brian McGinnis and get serious about making music — as well as discovering there was life outside Hollywood. "I'd never been to the city before; it was overwhelming," says David LaBrel, who admits to having lived in L.A. more [...]
When I started posting my 42 Favorite Finds of 2008 over at WNEW , I declined to say what I thought were the best records of the year. Instead I decided to write about my favorite listens of the year. That means anything from any year could be included thereby freeing myself myself from writing the gratuitous, overplayed, phone-it-in "Best Of" list. Then Rolling Stone released their list of Records Of The Year . Clearly, a bunch of caffeine-swilling, underpaid, cubicle-inhabiting , self-aggrandizing weenies sat around the Starbucks one day and [...]

We're not just about the classic tracks here in F45 Land. We like them crazy young'uns and their rock and roll, too. Michael Franti And Spearhead with Cherine Anderson - Say Hey (I Love You) I've loved his message since I first heard Stay Human while walking through Virgin Records at Union Square. Are we praying with him for change in this country come November 4th? Hell, yes. Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Disaster [...]
