Ian McGlynn 's relentlessly poppy "Falling Toward Heaven" forces the listener between two surrealist choices. The very title suggests an inverted world where gravity now pulls upward, shot in reverse through the standard Calvinist lens, that we are pulled ever closer toward the divine and not the damned. The other option leaves Newtonian physics intact, suggesting that we are above Nirvana and gravity pulls us ever closer towards it. An attractive series of images, all layered against a silky smooth chorus and a waltzy rhythm that inspires gauzy images of an idealized adolescence that certainly never existed. McGlynn's [...]

It's always hard to follow up a breakthrough records, but Japandroids have not only met any expectations that may have been placed on them, they've set themselves to break out to a bigger audience that no one, even the band themselves, may have ever expected them to reach. Although we're only halfway through the year, early reviews suggest that Celebration Rock is looking to be near the top of many critics' Best Of lists. Bigger, tighter, louder, and overall better than their already-stellar 2009 debut, Post-Nothing, the Canadian garage-rock duo take their songwriting to [...]
Independent pop that sounds like the mainstream doesn't get nearly as much attention as the weird stuff. But if you're just in the mood for some soaring hooks like the Verve, check out "Gold Morning Mend" by New Jerseyite Ian McGlynn off of Now We're Golden (out June 5 via Bailey Park). Download the track below. "Gold [...]
Oversized, 70's-and-80's-styled pop/rock melodies are the preeminent forte of one Ian McGlynn , an old-school, piano-playing singer/songwriter who mostly ratchets up the heartfelt keyboard pop and balladry of his earlier albums for a dense jolt of art-pop grandeur on his new album Now We're Golden (June 5). Co-writing with creative partner Chris Newkirk and working in the studio with producer Ken Stringfellow (R.E.M., Posies), McGlynn heads straight for soaring choruses and punchy, theatrical tunecraft on songs like the wall-of-sound drama of "Gold Morning Mend" and gorgeously rendered album closer "O Friends of Mine." TEEEL is back with another new reMix, where the New Jersey based SynthWave producer get the time I’ll never know, each one is a gem too, Up next is this reMix, we are prémiering today, of fellow New Jersey resident, singer/songwriter Ian McGlynn ’s new single ‘Gold Morning Mend’. McGlynn’s passionate vocal delivery makes for the prefect companion to TEEEL’s dreamy synthetic soundscapes. The reverb washed, almost Chillwavey, vocals lend themselves well to a quirky ElectroPop style, and a quirky ElectroPop style is what TEEEL delivers. By now we’ve heard enough TEEEL to look forward to [...]

On June 5th, indie pop mastermind Ian McGlynn will release his new album, Now We're Golden through Bailey Park Records. Written entirely on a tiny Casiotone MT-220 that McGlynn carried at all times in case inspiration struck him, the new album was put together spontaneously after McGlynn was able to line up time for Ken Stringfellow to produce the album. Before McGlynn met with Stringfellow, he already one album in the can, but he decided to record an entirely new album for their encounter. Now We're Golden is the result. Download the [...]

This was supposed to be a productive week, those hours after work. But I ended up doing what any solid music nerd would: procrastinate by going through my records and singles, rediscovering old favorites and discovering new treasures hidden within my collection. We listened to The Smiths on repeat for a few days. I dug out an old single by The Rondelles. I got Andi into Crystal Stilts. And despite all this recounting of the past, of all the listening to albums already in my collection, I [...]

It's not very often that an artist will just scrap an entire set of songs a mere few weeks before heading into the studio. Quite frankly there are a lot of folks out there, musician and not, who would consider an idea like that to be no less than preposterous. But for Ian McGlynn the choice was an obvious one, especially given the fact that he was presented with the opportunity to work with Ken Stringfellow, who's credits include work with REM and Big Star as well as being one of the two frontmen for the Posies. So [...]

The Snow Angel and the Icicle Sword by Ian McGlynn I'm retro-posting since I wasn't able to get this out yesterday. Nonetheless, this late post is still special since marks the 15th song in the Christmas countdown as well as my little boy Paolo's birthday :) Another thing that's special about this is that it comes from one of my favorite artists who makes such beautiful songs - especially during Christmas. Last year, Ian McGlynn shared with us his magically nostalgic song ' Listen to the Choir Sing ' . This year, [...]

Just like video killed the radio star, digital has killed the record store and singer/songwriter Ian McGlyn n wants you to remember all the record store did for us. He decided to put his solo project on hold temporarily for some straight-up, hook-laden synth-pop. He hooked up with his friend The Dead Radio and together they dipped into the sounds of the 80's to bring some nostalgic new wave sounds with indie sensibility. The product of that search is their first track, "Digital Killed the Record Store." enjoY! Ian McGlynn & The Dead [...]

Ian McGlynn is no stranger to The Indie Music Database. If you had a chance to check out our 25 Indie Songs of Christmas last year - you'll definitely remember him for his magically nostalgic Christmas song ' Listen to the Choir Sing '. In this week's edition of Fresh from the Post, we got a chance to check back with Ian and got to know more about his music, sample a couple of songs as well as talk about a new project just under his sleeve. [...]

On of the easiest ways for an artist to be remind fans (and blogs) that they exist is to release a little holiday carol at the end of the year. This year, for whatever reason, our inbox has been flooded with holiday music from all over the indie world and we thought it might be nice to share it all with you guys. Obviously there's only a week left until Christmas a lot of us will be scrambling to pick up last minute gifts (or all of our gifts), some will be baking to make some yummy foods for the [...]

Well today is a snow day in my part of Colorado, bringing everything outside to a deadened, frozen, thickly-blanketed crawl. It's gorgeous and quiet, and perfect weather for putting the finishing touches on my annual Christmas mix. I do love Christmas music, as you might remember from past years , but I also have a picky palate and am always amazed when I turn on the radio (as I did last night while we played cards) at how many many Christmas songs should have never been made. If I have to hear "Wonderful Christmastime" again, [...]

As you can see by the title of this blog post that I am jumping on board with the whole "theme" playlist due to the time of year. Well as corny as it sounds (and it does sound corny) without at some point embracing this time of year you can't really sit and judge those that are actually in the spirit. I am not necessarily saying that I am IN the spirit now, but what I am saying is without being "into the season" how can you assume that it is all a load of malarkey and start quoting [...]

From New Jersey singer / songwriter Ian McGlynn, with Listen to the Choir Sing . This song would be a lovely complement to a nice, frosty Sunday afternoon in the Christmas season. If you're craving to listen to something a bit more classic sounding in terms of Christmas songs, this song might just be the one for you. According to Ian's website - "There's something so solemnly sacred and magically nostalgic about Ian's Christmas offering, 'Listen To The Choir Sing,' that one can't help but imagine it featuring in both [...]
