Last week, we amused ourselves with a thought experiment that was doing the rounds on Tumblr — marking 4/11 by picking out the best songs in our iTunes library that were precisely four minutes and 11 seconds long. It turned out that there were heaps, and the idea got us thinking: when better to do something similar than 4/20? So we thought we'd limit ourselves to making our annual stoner mixtape for today out of songs that are precisely four minutes and 20 seconds long. (Disclaimer: these songs are all 4:20 on our iTunes [...]

Max Bell always preferred Allen Iverson. Today marks the re-release of Shaquille O'Neal's rookie-season Reeboks shoes, The Shaq Attaq . If I had some disposable income—$160, plus tax—I'd be outside of Footlocker with my lawn chair and G-Pen like all of the other sneaker heads. Instead, I've settled for DJ Goulet's ( that one ) commemorative Shaq Attaq mix, which showcases some of Shaq's best bars from his rap career. It's better than it sounds. After listening to all 21 minutes of the mix—complete with drops of Nas saying "like Shaquille, as well as a [...]

Last week, we gave a rundown of 12 albums that we believe will never see the light of day. From Nas and Common's Nas.Com project to Dr. Dre's Detox , there have been two many records announced that either never really got started or are just chilling on an external HDD somewhere. Whatever the case, some of y'all commented that there are plenty of other albums that have been announced that will probably never be released. After doing some investigating, we have to concur. Thus, we rounded up 12 more records that we're doubtful [...]
Ice Cube hasn't been doing much in the rap tip since 20102s I Am The West, but absence only makes the anticipation for a new project that much more. "Crowded" [...]

LL Cool J is hitting the road this summer to promote his forthcoming album Authentic . A few weeks after the LP's April 30 release, LL will headline the Kings of the Mic tour. If you watched the Grammy Awards this year, you no doubt saw LL Cool J's show-ending performance with DJ Z-Trip and Chuck D of Public Enemy , among others. Well, it seems like that wasn't some one-off type of gig, because they're all hitting the road together this spring and summer with Ice Cube and De La Soul , too. That's one hell of a lineup, even though I'm mostly excited about everyone but the headliner. Tour dates: [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Movies "EVERY DAY" FROM "STAND BY ME" In the DVD extras, director Rob Reiner said this Buddy Holly tune was one of his favorites. The song's toy-like celesta offers a sweet innocence to the scene as we see the four buddies walking on railroad tracks, which are about to present a little trouble to the young explorers and which brought real trouble to the boy they've set out to find. I've never been an avid follower of hip-hop or R&B, but for some reason I get a huge rush when I recognize a hip-hop or freestyle sample in a house track. And when it's done well, it really makes my day. James Silk does just that. Of course that's not all he does, but when I hear Nu Shooz or Isley Brothers ( Ice Cube for some) coming through, it just hits my pop [...]
If this piece was about the end of the original Pharcyde's journey as a group, it would make for a much more dramatic “Behind the Music” story about drugs, fist fights, and collective creativity cut short. Thankfully it's not because Imani already gave an excellent and thorough near two hour interview about the group’s history where you can laugh and cry about their lives-n-times accordingly. This here though is about one of the ten, maybe five, best rap albums ever made : Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde . A kaleidoscopic sonic force of fun, sex, jokes, [...]
During the spring of 1993, my family took a vacation, making the 15-hour drive from the Baltimore suburbs to Disney World. During the endless and queasy ride, I sat in the back of my family's Ford Aerostar with a Walkman and a cassette of Ice Cube's The Predator that a friend had dubbed me just before the vacation. I probably had other tapes with me, but I don't remember any of them. What I remember is sitting there, headphones wrapped around me, listening to a young millionaire lovingly describing the act of fucking a Los Angeles police officer [...]
