When the Arabian Prince cut his first record, few people east of San Bernadino had ever heard of the City of Compton and nobody had California in mind when they mentioned rap about street gangs. To an outsider, the scene in L.A. might have looked corny. Jheri curls, drum machines and dudes dressed in purple. Rap music was, sometimes literally, a joke. Bobby Jimmy and the Critters, a novelty act fronted by present-day shock jock Russ Parr attracted the best producers in Southern California, including Egyptian Lover ("We Like Ugly Women," 1984) and Arabian Prince ("Big Butt," 1984, [...]

Nowadays we know him as an actor (ironically portraying a police officer), but he used to have an excellent music career. During his rap days he had hits like "I'm Your Pusher" and "Colors". Then his hard rock band Bodycount stirred up unprecedented controversy with "Cop Killer" (as an aside, Bodycount isn't a half bad album). So my question this week is: whatever happened to Ice-T's music career?

Everlast should need no introduction. The man has been a fixture within the rap community for over 20 years now, first as an auxiliary member of Ice-T's infamous Rhyme Syndicate back in the mid-'80s, then at the centre of creating House of Pain along with Danny Boy and DJ Lethal in the early '90s, and eventually branching back out by going solo again in the late '90s. From the pugilistic imagery of 1990's Forever Everlasting to the barroom brawling, thugishness of House of Pain to the brash, countrified experimentation of his Whitey Ford alias, Everlast [...]
So with Tart going all political-cide on me, I think I will clear up a few things as well... as much as she doesn't say she has a political agenda I would beg to differ. As for my alliance, I am neither a Republican or Democrat and actually consider my self a Libertarian (Yes I know throw away that vote) As much as I would agree with McCain choosing Palin because she has breastages, well she does, and lord knows that a good pair of breastages distracts a lot of people which can be good. Lets see, Nuclear [...]

MP3: Ice-T - New Jack Hustler

Summer=procrastination, at least for the lazy, hazy, crazy days of Summer sorta guy that I am. Since Labor Day ended, I was hit with the realization that I've let things pile up and now find myself surrounded by troubles. If there was ever a problematic time of the year, it's now - replace the oxygen sensor for the Mustang, fix that broken bathroom drain pipe, convince the landlord that African waterbugs and roaches are one and the same; I'm sure you have your own list of crap to plow through. Here's to trials, tribulations, dilemmas, difficulties and predicaments. [...]

WOAH. This is kinda funny. This is like Kobe Beef meets Ponderosa steak. The hip hop legend that is KRS-One and the new school prodigy Soulja Boy talk with Rap city. They touch up on the Ice-T/ Soulja Boy beef, and KRS speaks on the issues and troubles of hip hop today. Soulja Boy seems a little uncomfortable but still does a a good job.CLASSIC.

I needed to do that dumb intentional misspelling. Just to be oddly poignant. Because let's be honest, spelling words "EVAR" of "TEH FUNNAY" could be one of the dumbest things ever. If you do it? You should be locked up in a room with Robert Downey, Jr., and have a bag of coke thrown on you. Good luck surviving that. But that's a total sidetrack. Here I just wanted to discuss the best soundtrack ever. No, it doesn't feature anything by Bette Midler. I know you're disappointed. In all honesty, if you're a fan of Bette Midler, I'd [...]
Don't know Iceberg Slim? Get yourself educated. He's from Chicago and there's 2 films coming out about his life featuring Ice T, Mos Def and Macy Gray. Here's some of his spoken word recordings. Iceberg Slim "The Fall (The Game)...

A couple days ago Soulja Boy (along with his two cronies as a backdrop) stated on his YouTube feed he is making money with every view videos on his page get as well as each comment posted to them. It's a strange change in the music industry when you include viral video counts, particularly when it's hip hop stars airing their beef, into music revenue (and then including YouTube and Google in there too is worth pondering, especially when this very blog is hosted through Google). All this is [...]

Before there was... ... there was... Like previous Beat Drop subject Isaac Hayes (and unlike all other Beat Drop subjects), Curtis Mayfield has not produced any hip hop records - at least not directly. However, he has produced, written, and performed (either with his heavenly voice or ability to play multiple instruments) many great songs that have been sampled by some of the best hip hop producers, some of whom we've highlighted in the past. [...]
Just posting this one for the hell of it. Also, because of the fact that the events portrayed in this song are wildly different than what I was doing at six this morning. What was I doing, you ask? I had just started my six-mile run, in order to train for the half-marathon I'm running in September. Which, as an activity, is about as gangsta as listening to re-runs of Prairie Home Companion . Although, to be fair, there was that one episode where Guy Noir pistol-whipped Dusty and Lefty for not getting him his coke money when [...]
![Soulja Boy Drops More Straight-Up Garbage [Lord Love A Donk]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1147651_lg.jpg)
Man, am I conflicted about this new Soulja Boy video, "Donk." On first listen, it sounded like Ice-T's worst fears writ large: A kid yelping about asses and humping the clap beat like Luke was sponsoring a Miami Bass Special Olympics. The moves in the video barely even seemed to correlate to the music while looking like they were given more consideration than the music itself. But with its almost wanton tempo shifts and monotonous typewriter drums, this is just the rap equivalent of Slipknot, something flashy and aggressive for the kids that many adults simply [...]

When he's not redecorating the world's walls with his signature fetish designs, our pal Insa is busy building a fashion empire. He's just unleashed a line of Insa Spandex- lurid, high-cut swimsuits inspired by the cover of Ice-T's Power. All fashion should be like this.
