That video up there is probably the most mental song we've recorded in our house. It is the second of a couple of preview videos of the PAWS Toad Session, which will be going up tomorrow. Yes, Phil does play his guitar with one of our candles. Yes, and with the cymbals too. It's not often I get involved in a gin extravaganza and come off worse than anyone, but yesterday was one of those incapacitating hangovers whereby I could barely even look at the internet, much less write anything on it. Is something 'on' the [...]

Almost Free From: Detroit, Michigan, US Good music never dies it just locks itself away in it's room for a while and then resurrects itself when it's safe to come out. The Killers made it ok to play with 80s indie once again and Almost Free have taken the hint. The Detroit trio's jittery alt pop owes it's very existence to the anthemic indie pioneers of the early 80s. [...]
Taking a break for a few days to see England play cricket and ultimately win the Ashes in Australia, beating them on their home turf for the first time since 1986/7. Well, you must be prepared to dream, mustn't you? Ian McNabb, out-Neil-ing Neil.
Exciting news that the Icicle Works are getting back together for a 30th anniversary tour - always deeply underappreciated were the Icicles. Slightly more disappointing is the way the NME chooses to report this : Ex-Oasis drummer Chris Sharrock's old band The Icicle Works have announced plans to reform for a 30th Anniversary tour. The band with a former Oasis drummer in. It's like buying a BMW but telling people "my car uses the same spark plugs as you get in a VW camper". -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain [...]
...I think there's some snow coming—anybody hear anything? (I kid.) But if you're reading us from anyplace outside of the DC/Baltimore area, that header's right—we're getting two feet of snow at minimum. (Which is fine with me. I got some records to listen to.) We're closing shop a bit early today but make sure you're back here on Monday when we kick off our Record Store Day [...]

There's probably as much snow on the ground tonight as I've seen in nearly twenty years. On the eave, it's still undisturbed, but in the streets below, it's already been churned into a sloshy mess. The usual flow of traffic is non-existent, though, and the snow is still falling in the glow of the streetlights, so the landscape might be pristine again come morning. One news channel is referring to it as "The Snowpocalypse." I think we have about three inches of snow. It's more like a snow globe. (of [...]

So, I don't come to the record store thing just out of the blue. To be fair, I've worked in TWO record stores to date. Both were Record Worlds—the corporate variety—where it was mandated that all of the employees, except for the managers, sport blue polyester vests. Y'know – to differentiate you from the other riff raff browsing through the import bins or what have you. Record World, both based in malls at the time, wasn't the type of place that would buy used LPs however—it was purely new stuff and catalog items. Which didn't bother me [...]
Vodka! Echo And The Bunnymen Think I Need It Too Lips Like Sugar (Way Out West Remix Edit) Do It Clean (Live) This is a first for me. I actually got permission to post one of these songs. For some reason I was put on the right mailing list and some lovely people from Echo And The Bunnymen's label sent me a link to download the new album in its entirety, with permission to post the single on my blog! That's awesome! [...]

It's cold, I'm told ... the neighbor's dogs are barking in code. What else is there to do but lock yourself inside with a cup of your favorite warm beverage and some vintage new wave? EAR FARM's Mixtape #41: It's cold, I'm told 1. "We Are Glass" by Gary Numan 2. "Rescue" by Echo & the Bunnymen 3. "Empire State Human" by Human League 4. "Love Is A Wonderful Colour" by Icicle Works 5. "No Words" by Clan of Xymox 6. "Sensoria" by [...]

It's Saturday. Here we go again. Today's piece is an oddity. The first time I heard it, it was actually the cover I was hearing (although I didn't realise at the time). I'll try my best to do a fair comparison, but seeing as one of the versions is by one of my all-time favourite bands, I might be a bit biased. Whatever. Here's Whisper To A Scream. The original was written and performed by The Icicle Works, a mildy successful 80s [...]

I spent this stormy Saturday afternoon engaged in some fiendish alchemical pursuits of my own, actually. Dare you face the delicious terror that is.... ...THE CAKE OF ENTROPIC DOOM? (Or, in less purple terms, my wife's birthday cake.) Sure, it looks unassuming and innocent, but the cream cheese frosting and gumdrops are just there to lure the unwary into sampling its devilishly rich texture. Icicle Works - In the Cauldron of Love (from Icicle Works [...]

I Can See Clearly Now Who remembers the days when the majority of TV was monochrome? I recall that the early part of my youth was spent watching black and white, and being amazed when I went round to a mates house to watch colour broadcasts. At some point my parents rented a TV from Grenada Rentals and I got to share the delights that my friends were enjoying. I think it was when I was about 7 or 8 years old - so about 1972ish. [...]

Wow. Posting Lily Allen has brought a shit-ton of hits to Sugartown. Who knew? Even the illustrious Thighs Wide Shut has linked me for it. Amazing. Guest DJing at Phantastic Invisible Tentacle (on 1/15) was excellent! I adore those boys & the Beauty Bar . A great crowd too. The next PIT is on Monday 1/22 & it should be nuts. The special guests are/is The Thing with Two Heads (Crypt Records)! Starts at 8 pm -- you have no [...]
Today is National One-Hit Wonder Day in the U.S., though affection for the one-hit wonder isn't unique to the States. Just this month, New Zealand music television station C4 dedicated an episode of its program, U Choose 40 to One Hit Wonders. A viewer poll on the C4 website determined the 40 songs. Viewers were given 60 options, though "write-in votes" could be sent via e-mail. The Kiwis'
