Frank Yang The city's music critics had to be a little disappointed upon arriving at the Phoenix on Sunday night and seeing signs informing them that Chicago's Yawn had cancelled their appearance because of car trouble in Montreal - after all, had their set been anything less than impressive, the review would have written itself. But the opportunity to be simultaneously succinct and lazy still presented itself with London's Yuck , not that it was needed. I saw the quartet back at SXSW , where they were one of [...]

Katla will see daylight on 6/7. Ida Maria recently performed on Norwegian TV. Purchase Ida Maria items via Insound. MP3: Ida Maria - Cherry Red

I'm feeling pretty good about this playlist, take the time to check out a few songs 1. Shiv Hurrah- All my teeth fell out I've got this bad habit of forgetting to give a track list to my friends when i burn a mix for them. At least five times i've had someone call me up and ask "who sings the song that goes 'i had a dream that all my teeth fell out as i was just about to [...]

It sounded familiar to me, but I just couldn't place it. The Little One and I had been watching a little TV, when the trailer came on during a commercial break. Right before the two minute mark is what I'm talking about. I knew that song. Couldn't place the artist. I put T.L.O. on the case. She can get the answer to any question. She's my own private Google, that girl. Except way hotter than Google. She puts the boobs in G(*)(*)gle. Um... What was my point again? [...]
Today, in honour of International Women's Day, Rarities pays tribute to a handful of its favourite female singer-songwriters. International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It honours the work of the Suffragettes (those who campaigned for women's right to vote), celebrates women's success, and reminds the world of inequities that still need to be redressed. Yesterday we experienced Black Metal, sharp-intake-of-breath-inducin g prices and falling over on ice. How could things get any more Norwegian? Well, with sledding of course. After a hungover dash to the meeting point, we were taken by our Norwegian hosts on the train [obligatory mention of how clean and efficient it was compared to London here] up into the mountains. We were met by an instructor who should never attempt a career in motivational speaking (“It’s very possible that you’ll skid off into the woods”; “You’ll definitely be needing helmets”) and let loose on a 1959 [...]

Not big fans of Ida Maria , mostly because we think she verges on noise more than music. But her song " Keep Me Warm " is beautiful tune ad if this is any indication to what direction she is heading to on her new album Katla then it's all good. 25. Stars – The Five Ghosts Holds up really well upon repeated listens, unlike it’s predecessor. Though, frustratingly, the title track didn’t end up on the album. 24. Action Action – The Ones Who Get It Are The Ones Who Need Not To Know Despite an annoying lead vocalist (who kind of grows on you [...]

Rocking a newly shorter 'do with no guitar in hand, Ida Maria delivered a vocally powerful performance of her current single, Bad Karma , which can be found on forthcoming album, Katla . Standing militantly behind the mic, Maria let the song loose on a recent episode of Opptreden på Skavlan, in her native Norway. Check out the live footage below. I love the howling "whooooaa...bad karma's a bitch!" [...]

One of my favourite female singer-songwriters around right now, Ida Maria , has released a new video for her song "Quite Nice People". The track appears on her new album, Katla , which has been receiving huge praise since its release in the songstress' native Norway. The album is a follow-up to Ida Maria's 2009 debut album, Fortress 'Round My Heart (read my review of it here ). New song, "Quite Nice People", is included below. You can access the official video [...]

Rock! Hard! It's our favorite Norwegian strummer and singer, Ida Maria , back with a new tune, and the promise that her second album will be out, oh, sometime soon. While details surrounding all of this are still vague-ish, we can confirm that new track, Bad Karma , was a proper release in her homeland back in September. We can also justify that this song...is badass. Powerful riffs and deep drumkicks make this new jam quite [...]

I was very hesitant to post this song. Why? Well, I guess because it's pop, I guess because it's a song that you would probably hear on the radio. It's not weird, or hard to get. It's not overly distorted, or chill-wave, or lo-fi, or any other kind of bullshit. But, fuck it. It's a really really really good song. So I'm going to post it...bring on the annoying music snob commentary. It's one of those songs that is literally seconds from completely falling apart, from either the instruments blowing up, or everyone in the band giving up, or some [...]
Best Albums in 2009. The Duke & the King – Nothing Gold Can Stay. Download “The Morning I Get to Hell” (mp3). Simone Felice, of the Felice Brothers, has teamed up with Robert Bird Burke, Simi Stone, and Reverend Loveday to create a folk album that is also an homage to ‘70s soul. The ardent acoustic songs are punctuated with moving melodies, accordant music, and lilting vocals. Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers – Songs in the Night. Download “Songs in the Night” (mp3). Filed under: News , Exclusive , UK Each February for the past 12 years, Norway's by:Larm festival has showcased emergent Scandinavian artists to visiting international media and industry, hosting early-career sets from future breakout acts like Lykke Li and Ida Maria . But at today's festival opening Q&A address, it turned the spotlight over to Alan McGee , a 49-year-old Scotsman who spends his days playing "house-dad" on a pig farm in Wales, and who's more interested in signing real-estate deals [...]
