[Photo Credit: Patrick McCann ] Earlier this year Baltimore-based indie upstarts Golden Gurls seemed to drop out of the sky like a house onto a witch, sporting an inexplicably well-conceived and awesome debut long-player [ review ]. But shoot the breeze with fronter and guitarist Andrew Mabry for hours as we've done in recent weeks, and it is apparent that the excellent Typo Magic is the product of decades of music-making, music fandom and immersion in ancillary underground culture. Mr. Mabry has put in the hours: if Indie Rock was a Fortune 500 company, CEO [...]
Eno's 64, and Sugar Ray, Ultravox, Yung Wu & more provide plenty of reasons to celebrate.

I Author My Own Disaster, Volume Three, Part Three Ye Rin Mok Two diamonds as wide as earring studs have been made to share the spooky quantum state known as entanglement. The feat, performed at room temperature, blurs the divide between the classical and quantum worlds, since typically the quantum link has been made with much smaller particles at low temperatures. Entanglement is one of the weird aspects of quantum mechanics, where the fates [...]

Nowhere near as ubiquitous as 1999, When Doves Cry or Kiss or anywhere as dirty as say Darling Nikki , When You Were Mine , by Prince is still a perennial favorite amongst the die-hards and, judging by the small grip of covers today, fellow musicians as well. It's a simple, stellar piece of heartbreak pop that, despite being released in 1980, could have easily been heard coming out of some Detroit jukebox sandwiched somewhere between The Shirelles and The Shangri-Las. Fun fact: this one [...]

As you can see from the release of the official cover. Ida Maria is not slowing down anytime soon. The Norwegian singer/songwriter is set to deliver many hits. The release is different for different countries but expect it this year. Filed under: Beats , Scandi Tagged: album , ida , Katla , maria , new , single

Despite the fact that my posting frequency here on the 'Nac has taken a relative nosedive over the past couple years, I've still been doing a fair share of show-organizing on the side. Nothing crazy, no huge shindigs that might label me a 'promoter' or whatever, but more the kinds of random music-related events that pop up and need a host or a helping hand. There was that Pains of Being Pure At Heart album release party a couple weeks ago, David Bazan playing in my living room last weekend, my imminent return to the [...]

Not big fans of Ida Maria , mostly because we think she verges on noise more than music. But her song " Keep Me Warm " is beautiful tune ad if this is any indication to what direction she is heading to on her new album Katla then it's all good. I don't think I've ever mentioned Ida here before (aside from monthly mix inclusions), but they're one of my very favorites and Autumn is the perfect time for listening to them, so here we are. They wrote some of the most honest, heartbreaking songs I've laid ears on and "Tellings" is one of their finest. This live version from 1996 is beautiful!
my heart beats with honey and salt water, it is flowing, thick with boardwalk taffy. i will pull long strands and wrap them around your throat and up towards your lips. i will chew through them to get to your mouth, and chew just a little bit more. i promise.

You know things have reached crisis point when the first words spoken by your baby are goo goo zela. I'll admit I've been letting my paternal duties slip since June 11 and the guilt I'm feeling isn't likely to cease until late on Sunday. Of course being the sort that I am I'd been grooming my wife for what lay ahead since just after Christmas. Little witty asides, miscellaneous facts and joyful references to what was gloriously building up in South Africa - the idea being that familiarity, rather than breeding contempt, would instead foster a parallel sense of wonder [...]
Well, I was going to see Vetiver at Spaceland until I realized that my last paycheck was hampered by my having taken days off, and I have no money until an advertising check arrives sometime this coming week. What will I do until then? Well, not much. Today I went to work and had enough money to eat one yogurt and one bagel. Dinner was a box of Crispix I've kept around the house for emergency hunger situations for about the past year. Those year-old Crispix sure don't taste very good anymore. So, what are my [...]

This warm little fuzzy number prompted us to dig back into the year to pull out her album for another listen. It's very well written and sombre, yet not drab. Have a listen. Who? Portrait of David What? Melancholic Slowcore Sounds like? Low, Spain, The White Birch So, I started this way too confusing attempt to trade all my unwanted cds that keep piling up in my room for ones that are more suited to my taste, and I had no reponse this far. Logically, cause it's way too confusing. And the list is too long. So i decided to just introduce all these bands on my blog, so that if you listen to [...]
