Photo by You Ain't No Picasso Ever heard of The Apples In Stereo ? The Elephant 6? Robert Bobbert and the Bubble Machine ? Okay, that last one was a children's album that's only tangentially related to this here post, but it just serves to show that Robert Schneider is a seriously busy and talented dude. From kickstarting the whole Elephant 6 collective to pumping out albums full of psychedelic pop-rock-and producing that classic Netural Milk Hotel album we all know and [...]

Ha! - a fit of musical foolishness that's doubtless been done before... still, maybe I can string it out for a few weeks? (that's every day, not just Saturdays). For starters then - a glorious track from the rather under-appreciated Ideal Free Distribution , who just might be gigging this year. from their excellent self-titled debut album, which I totally recommend you get hold of & listen to, in all its psychedelic pop splendour. ♫ Saturday Drive - Ideal Free Distribution Ideal Free Distribution (2007) [...]

Hearing the Benton & Lexington Kentucky's Ideal Free Distribution is like getting an incredibly well curated care package of the coolest 60's psychedelic pop songs in the mail from your best friend. Think Zombies, Kinks, Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, See-For-Miles Who, Nuggets, Tommy James & The Shondells, 13th Floor Elevators, lots of phasing, maybe some backwards tape looping and some Fruit Stripe Gum. But for IDF it's not all about the distant past. Think also of Dukes of Stratosphere, Apples In Stereo and Pure Pop For Now People (but a little more rough [...]

Saturday's Theme Mix is ready, and what a mix! There are so many songs about Saturdays and Sundays, so for the next two days, I will not make personal notes on every song. I'll make my notes on most of them, probably, and add a link to the band's website. Commenting all these songs will take too much of my time. This mix includes a lot of my favourites, and I hope you will enjoy it too. Comment if you like it, hate it or miss something here. The songs will be online [...]
Intimations have been given of my ardor for NY/NC's trippy The Comas a couple of times, and this song, just discovered at AOL's excellent Spinner.com, only makes the heart grow warmer. I like these other artists very much as well and have provided links to information and more songs by them. This might be a good time to say I try and provide such links for all artists I post. The Comas - Come My

The amount of time it takes to record an album varies dramatically from artist to artist. Some are like Ryan Adams, sometimes releasing several albums per year. Others tend to be more in the mold of a Scott Walker, releasing one new album about once every ten years. Whether or not the time involved can define a perfectionist, it just goes to further emphasize that every artist has a different way of creating their own songs. As far as releases between albums go, Ideal Free Distribution tends to be taking after the Scott Walker route, an artist they [...]
Lexington band the Ideal Free Distribution just released their debut album on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records, and I couldn't be happy happier. Check 'em out if you're a fan of the Zombies, Syd Barrett or The Beach Boys (which I know you are). MP3: Ideal Free Distribution - Apples ...

Lexington, KY I couldn't remember if I ever blogged about Ideal Free Distribution or not. They're from Lexington and I'm constantly surprised with all the wonderful musicians that come from that area. Their self-titled debut is diverse in sound and loaded with hypnotic melodies. The track I'm featuring today is perfect for... well, a Saturday drive. "Saturday Drive" Ideal Free Distribution on MySpace
Atlanta music blog Cable & Tweed has a lot of good stuff posted at the moment. Before going away, Rich posted a mix of a dozen or so new bands, not one of which I'd heard of, which shamed me rather. Anyway, I have posted my four favourite tracks from the mix below, and if you pop over there and read the post properly , then there are at least half a dozen more gems in there. Highly recommended! Ideal Free Distribution - Apples & Oranges [...]

I've just posted two reviews at Optical Atlas by two new bands with impressive debuts: Ideal Free Distribution and Dark Meat . Lexington's Ideal Free Distribution , led by Craig Morris, Tony Miller, and Eric Griffy, is a throwback psychedelic pop band highly recommended to fans of The Apples in Stereo (Robert Schneider mixed the album, and members of the IFD contribute to New Magnetic Wonder ), Casper and the Cookies , and Great Lakes . Dark Meat couldn't be more different. The Athens [...]
As long as I'm sharing some local love with the Scourge of the Sea/Petticoat Petticoat tour dates, why not make it a two-fer? Ideal Free Distribution will be releasing their self titled album on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records in a few short days--December 12 to be exact. I ...
IDEAL FREE DISTRIBUTION You may remember Ideal Free Distribution from a feature I did on them a long time ago, when all they had was a wee E.P. Now they’ve got a full length disc, which sounds exactly like the EP only longer. Good stuffâ€"vintage hippie/Beach Boys meet indie-modern Midlake. Definitely worth a listen or two. And I re-read my old interview with them and, if I do say so myself,
In the world of behavioral ecology, ideal free distribution is a theory which states that, if given the choice between two areas, animals will distribute themselves in proportion to the amount of food available in each area. In the world of independent rock music, Ideal Free Distribution is an eight piece pop band from [...]
