While it has been widely ignored, the post Britpop / pre "The Libertines/The _____/garagey" band era was kind of a dark period in UK music. UK had just witness one of the greatest talent and musical explosions of all time in the early 90s but by the late 90s, those bands had all either broken up, started to suck or completely change their sound. During this time, bands found it hard to garner success, specially with the charts being dominated by the Spice Girls/Westlife/whatever. To put it into perspective, Stereophonics was considered one of the biggest acts from the UK [...]

firstly, i was really surprised to see that cmj was still around, but it doesnt appear they actually are in the magazine business - the old business model. i subscribed for years from maybe like 93ish to maybe 2000? anyway, happy to see they're still around even though they've been really out of my brain since the end of my subscription. i knew they still did the cmj conference thing, but thought that may be in name only. either way.. its interesting to see who they, or the labels in this case capitol was pushing back in 03. most surprising [...]
Idlewild guitarist / songwriter Rod Jones, is back with a remarkable new solo project, The Birthday Suit. Unfortunately, having only just announced their UK tour, the band have had to postpone heading out on the road due to a recurring shoulder injury. The dates are currently being rebooked and hopefully there will be a new [...]

All hail the Janelle Monae collaboration. She hasn't spent all her time being an ArchAndroid - she's also worked with some excellent producers and created some of the past few years' best music. She has a knack for turning most tracks she touches to gold; for holding disparate styles together. There were some real surprises - she's chosen her co-producers well. I'm genuinely surprised "Nerd Girl" and "20123 never got more buzz. The rest are a motley crew. Jaspects collaborated with Janelle on Broadcasting The Definition (2006) and The Polkadotted Stripe (2009). "Peachtree Blues" [...]
![[Introducing] – Will Hanson](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3585047_lg.jpg)
Tweet A top tip for anyone who wants me to pay attention to their music: name-drop Chemikal Underground . I mean, don't just lie and claim your signed to them, or anything; but if there is a connection, it's definitely worth flagging up. Will Hanson did. And lo, I find myself writing about him. Following the break-up of his previous band, Proxy, Paris-born Will left London for Glasgow, via New York - as you do. Why anyone would pick Glasgow over Edinburgh [...]
In early 2010 several of Scotland's most talented indie-rock and folk musicians came together to collaborate on a project called The Fruit Tree Foundation, and the resulting First Edition will finally be available for purchase on June 28th. The idea for the album arose from the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival with the intention of raising awareness of mental health and challenge perceptions of mental health problems. The musicians involved are members of such bands as Frightened Rabbit, Twilight Sad, Idlewild, Sparrow and the Workshop, the Delgados, as well as a host of others. [...]
Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchison & Idlewild's Rod Jones - "I Forgot the Fall" Last October, a group of Scottish musicians gathered for a pair of concerts in Glasgow and Edinburgh at the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival. In addition to performing live, members of Frightened Rabbit, the Twilight Sad, Idlewild, the Delgados, and others collaborated on an original studio album, which was sold at the event. Today, calling themselves the Fruit Tree Foundation, the group announced the wide release of their album, First Edition , in association with the Mental Health Foundation [...]
Tweet As part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival in 2010, a gaggle of notable Scottish musicians all got together to write and record a compilation album themed around mental health issues. Among those involved were members from Frightened Rabbit , The Twilight Sad , Idlewild, The Delgados, and more, and whilst you've been able to get your hands on the records via various online unscrupulous methods, it was previously only available [...]
9 of Scotland's finest artists launch a brand new collaborative record as part of 2010's Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival. The musicians wrote the material over the course of a few days in an isolated Perthshire farmhouse, focusing on issues relating to mental health and wellbeing. The album is now being commercially released by Chemikal Underground Records. Featuring: James Graham Twilight Sad), (Scott Hutchison (Frightened Rabbit), Rod Jones (Idlewild), Jill O'Sullivan (Sparrow and the Workshop), Emma Pollock (The Delgados), Karine Polwart, Jenny Reeve, Alasdair Roberts and James Yorkston. [...]
Roddy Woomble has changed a great deal since the early days of Idlewild. Having watched one of the band's final pre-hiatus shows back in May 2010, there was a real sense that the band were reaching backwards to find their heavier moments: a melancholy had descended, and the anger of the 100 Broken Windows / Hope Is Important era seemed to be rocking on its last legs. What emerged from the wreckage is perhaps a better representation of Roddy's true character. The man who was once a symbol of Scottish rock music now resides on a [...]

He might start with the lyric "Abandon your traditions/watch them disappear one by one" but on his third solo effort, The Impossible Song & Other Songs , Idlewild front man Roderick 'Roddy' Woomble walks a familiar path, albeit with brand new shoes. The Impossible Song & Other Songs For those of you new to fourforty4, the idea of InReview is for the writer to listen to a record, make his/her notes, and then put his thoughts on the record to its creator, giving the reader [...]

Wet Paint From: United Kingdom After suffering the loss of their royalties after a robbery it's hardly surprising that Wet Paint are not in the mood for a party. It's also understandable that their second album, the bleakly titled, 'Woe' is about as far from a party record as you're likely to get. With lyrics that talk of money loss and being written off and titles like Aim Low and Little Disappointments it's unlikely [...]
