One evening, a few weeks ago, I was sitting at the computer working and listening to itunes in shuffle when Iggy and the Stooges came up and caught me by surprise. I hadn't listened to this record in quite some time. "Search and Destroy" came out of nowhere, and ran through me like a shot of adrenaline, just as it has repeatedly since I was a teenager and bought the LP out of the cutout bin at Streetside Records in St. Louis. After listening for a few moments, I realized I was listening to the bastardized remix that Iggy decided [...]
A picture worths more than 1,000 words. And makes us remind a few songs too. >> I Wanna Be Your Dog (Steak Lunch Remix) - Iggy & the Stooges >> Get 'em High (Ratatat Remix) - Kanye West >> My Drink n' My 2 Step (Cousin Cole Remix) - Cassidy >> Gasolina (Radioclit Remix, Neon Coyote Edit) - Bonde do Rolê >> Rehab (Hot Chip Remix) [...]

Oh, I feel old today. I went out last night to see Mudhoney and got home way late. Or way early this morning, depending how you look at it. Great show – I'll talk a little more about it in the days to come. But I'm tired as hell today. In the meantime, I've got what would seem at first glance to be an unrelated mix of music. I was looking for a song in my iTunes library and noticed something amusing as I scrolled through the I's: Song after [...]

I'm having a rather grumpy day today. No music was really suiting my mood until I came across Raw Power in my iTunes library. Definitely in my list of the greatest albums of all time, Raw Power drips with the kind of attitude that just dares people to mess with you. Obviously, I consider Raw Power [...]

Check out this link to a fascinating piece in Rolling Stone by Robert Levine on the ten-year-old philosophical shift in mixing records that is responsible for producing a sound that might, as Levine says, truly mean "the death of high fidelity." The basic point is that record producers, using dynamic compression, are now mixing records at a very high volume, with little variation between the different instruments, and between the highs and lows. Apparently, this makes the records sound brighter and therefore more likely to sound good on [...]
As you have probably heard, the Writers Guild is currently on strike. That means no soap operas, variety shows, sitcoms and whatever the hell this is. The major issue at hand is how to compensate writers for "new media". New media is what is called a "buzzword" even though it's actually two words and no one knows what it means. From what I can gather, the union scribes want cash for internet downloads. Which sounds pretty good. Which is why I've decided to join my brothers in the guild. That's right, I'm on strike. One more time: I'M ON STRIKE! [...]

Saturday gets off to the worst start possible. And not just because the first band we see are McFly . No, I'm talking about the shadow hanging over the site. A big, grey, miserable sky lingers overhead all day. It threatens storms but delivers only an occasional shower of light rain. Things could be worse we think. Then we step into the JJB tent and come face to face with the aforementioned act. A glorified boy band with guitars. The tent is packed but you get the impression it's more from a purely ironic stance [...]

I'm back. And what a weird week and a half it has been. Talk about going from one extreme to the other. Cannes was glorious. The sun shone everyday. The food was delicious. The city clean. Some amazing architecture and a hell of a lot of money on display. Our hotel was great despite suffering from a mish mash of decor ideas. It's themed floors, gaudy colours and strange designs did make it a little odd but it was comfortable beyond compare. Plus there was a rather nice roof top swimming pool with stunning views across [...]

I have no idea how I first found Sure Juror, or if they found me. I'm willing to bet Myspace was involved. But over the past year, they played the first show I booked in Lexington and released their superb second album, Smut. MP3: Sure Juror - Making Friends Has Never ...
We don't get to talk about video games here, and that's a shame. I'm a geek and i'm not ashamed of it. So tonight damnit, i'm gonna talk about some video games. Over the years the gaming industry has been in the midst of the overwhelming popularity of rhythm-based games. From the Japanese import Dance Dance Revolution to console classics like Parappa the Rapper that was released in the mid 90's and one of the first rhythm video games of it's time. It's interesting as music and video games go hand in [...]
