Here's an encouraging note for the bands around town who try and try and try some more: Leslie & the Badgers' self-released album "Roomful of Smoke" (which we loved when it came out last year ) has been picked up by Nashville-based label Thirty Tiger (home to Elizabeth Cook, Justin Townes Earle, Jim Lauderdale and Those Darlins). The Specials reminded us that they are still important because 30 years later, their songs are still as listenable and fun as they were in 1977, and the issues they wrote abou—racism, the seeming inescapability of the rat race, and general good-time having—are still just as relevant. Also, Jerry Dammer told the crowd they were mostly really beautiful but with "really fucking ugly" ones interspersed, and what good festival crowd doesn't enjoy a little abuse?

Set times have been announced for this weekend's Sunset Strip Music Festival , a three-day affair highlighted by Saturday's party on Sunset Boulevard. The street will be closed on Saturday between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Boulevard to accommodate two outdoors stages — with music going on inside the Roxy and the Key Club, there will be plenty to justify the $39.50 ticket price.
