When I first picked up the plank of wood I had the cheek to call a guitar, I hadn't yet mastered changing from a D to an A and back again before I realised something was missing. I needed something, anything, to disguise the bum notes from the badly-played chords I was trying to strangle out of my instrument at parent-bothering volume through my wee practice amp. That something was the fuzzbox. What a revelation! I could play along to most of The Buzzcocks ' What Do I Get and mangle a passable version of Everybody's [...]

Adam Green & Binki Shapiro: Adam Green & Binki Shapiro — Joining the likes of 1960s duos like Sonny and Cher , Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra , and Ike and Tina Turner , a new release has revived that classic pop duet sound. Adam Green and Binki Shapiro’s self-titled full length is a modern take on traditional coupling that’s been lost amongst full band lineups and solo artists over the years. It’s a bold move to do a his and hers duet album and quite risky, considering it follows timeless records of [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , The Hit List , Music Appreciation Getty | Getty It's been a great year for music. But what's been even greater is how musicians have been paying tribute to each other's work, as well as creating their own. Yes, we listeners scored some great original music, but there's something to be said for artists like Feist , Destroyer , and Bruce [...]

According to New York Daily News the guitarist passed away Tuesday (Nov. 27) at his adopted home of Toulouse, France. He was 87. A DECADE after the release of his one and only album, the two-disc scattergun genius of Headphone Masterpiece, Cody ChesnuTT is set to release new material. The cult troubadour and Roots collaborator's new album will be called Landing On A Hundred, and out in October. A spokesman said: "Landing On A Hundred was recorded with a ten-piece band in Memphis-based Royal Studios, the sonic birthplace of some of the deepest works by soul and blues luminaries like Al Green, Buddy Guy and Ike & Tina Turner." Listen to a taster, That's Still Mama, above.
Filed under: News , Music Appreciation Frank Micelotta, Getty Late July and early August in the heart of summer is also the heart of the music festival season. Heck, in the next couple weeks we've got Lollapalooza , Newport Folk Festival, Gathering of the Juggalos and something called Nerdapalooza in Orlando, Florida. There's no doubt that some of the bands (and fans) at these events will make history in one way or [...]

In the 13th installment of Covered With Soul we have interpretations of hits by The Mamas And Papas, Bob Dylan, Bobbie Gentry, Joe South, John Denver, Glen Campbell, Dionne Warwick, Neil Sedaka, Hall & Oates, The Doobie Brothers, The Beatles (twice), Etta James, Tommy Edwards, Bobby Vinton, The Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, Bobby Darin (or Tim Hardin) and Steam, as well as a song from the Hammerstein & Rogers musical Carousel. For two tracks, those by Ike & Tina Turner and Cissy Houston, I have no year of recording; they appeared on greatest hits type of albums. [...]

Ike & Tina Turner : Goodbye, So Long [ purchase ] The late sixties and early seventies may have been the heyday of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, but the years leading up to River Deep - Mountain High and Proud Mary (to name but a few unforgettables) are just as interesting for lovers of sweet soul music. The collection of songs pictured above, which the [...]
I came across today's Videodrome entry last month while digging around in search of an Ike & The Rhythm Kings performance I'd previously stumbled upon (late) one night. I never did find the Ike clip, but this "live performance" did more than suffice. And yes, do note the quotes surrounding the words 'live' and 'performance'. [...]

Here are 5 great covers of Phil Spector songs to listen to while awaiting a verdict which will most likely (fingers crossed!) keep Mr. Spector in jail.
(I can't stop loving you) I've made up my mind To live in memory of the lonesome times (I can't stop wanting you) It's useless to say So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday (Dreams of yesterday) Those happy hours that we once knew Tho' long ago, they still make me blue They say that time heals a broken heart But time has stood still since we've been apart Yesterday I posted up a [...]

“What, the show for kids?” my colleague, the one with an extravagant collection of adidas tracksuit jackets, replied when I asked if she watched Glee . It’s a regular prejudice to confuse Glee with High School Musical , and therefore to presume that the interpretations of the songs covered on Glee must be intrinsically inferior to their originals. The former presumption can be ascribed to benign ignorance; the latter claim can be made only by people who hate music. Fact is, in many cases the Glee versions are equal to their originals, [...]
Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound turns 50.
Taken from Confined To Soul, Ike Turner's 1973 record with the Family Vibes (alternately/previously known as the Kings of Rhythm), "Garbage Man" serves as both an example of Turner at his funkiest and, yes, funniest. It's worth a listen for the the clavinet work alone...or, as I so eloquently described it to a friend recently, [...]
