As the inimitable Lt. Aldo Raine once said, ‘arrivederci’ . I’m leaving to become a homeless person in Italy for two weeks in the hope of running into either Porcelain Raft or Silvio Berlusconi, which does unfortunately mean that for fourteen tear stained days you will have to find your new music elsewhere. However, all is not lost, because in this post I’m going to throw at you a load of stuff that I have been meaning to post and would have carefully written about over the next two weeks. Instead, it’s going to be Soundcloud links and [...]
How did you get together, where you from and why did you decide to make music together? Jim and I met a few years back here in Oxford, MS. He is from Oxford and I came here for school. He was in another band I knew of and he had heard my solo project so [...]
Monika Playing on Prefix is a feature on KCRW’s Music Blog in which writers from the eclectic music site Prefix hip you to what’s coming out of their computer speakers each week. Oxford , MS is a small Southern city with a bit of a mixed identity. The city simultaneously plays host to the campus of Ole Miss-which includes William Faulkner’s home- and just a stone’s throw away, is the Cats Purring [...]
Following on from previous tracks 'Teeth' and 'Goods' that showcased Oxford, Mississippi duo Illls' knack for crafting accomplished, effortlessly memorable post-punk fuelled garage-pop, the band return now with another visual serving off their debut Dark Paradise EP , released June 17th on The Sounds Of Sweet Nothing ( Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Gross Magic, Au Palais ). The video for 'Bathroom Floor' follows the duo wandering through the New Orleans Mardi Gras, the nocturnal carnival setting providing the perfect backdrop to the shaggy, post-punk energy of the [...]
Artist : ILLLS Title : Dark Paradise Label : The Sounds of Sweet Nothing Release Date : June 17th BUY IT The saying “ Never judge a book by its cover ” tends to be thrown out of the window when picking something new and elusive from the record shop. So the cover of the debut EP from [...]
How two boys from Mississippi are serving up meaty riffs alongside sensitive lyrical introspection in their introductory EP.
It's always nice when a highly-anticipated release lives up to its potential. The consistently brilliant debut EP by ILLLS [ Twitter / Facebook ] more than lives up to the promise of the material we'd already heard from it; in fact, it far surpasses it, and in its 6 tracks provides just enough for fans to sink their teeth into whilst simultaneously leaving them wanting more. The only solution for that thorny problem will be for the 21-minute EP to be absolutely played to death - I should know. I've listened to this a surprising amount since it was found [...]
Simple, distorted garage-pop with a little added layer of texture. This new track from Mississippi outfit ILLLS, from their upcoming Dark Paradise EP should be part your already growing summer soundtrack. Check it out below and grab the digital release June 17.
ILLLS upcoming EP, Dark Paradise , has been generating a reserved interested in the music world. With their latest offering, "Goods," I am happy to say I have one eyebrow cocked quizzically in their direction. This Mississippi duo aren't trying anything that hasn't been done before, but this is something I could strut down a sun-soaked street to. The track is artistically over-muffled and over-muted, but this creates a warm, fuzzy sound which reeks of summer. Don't get me wrong though, as this tune shoulders a fair burden of good vibes. If this is to your liking, rejoice as [...]
Mississippi duo ILLLS are giving away the second track from their fothcoming debut EP Dark Paradise .
Bathroom Floor Teeth ( previously on CWR) Out of the [...]
Mississippi duo ILLLS create a specific blend of progressive, swampy anglo-american rock, complete with scuzzy overlay and post-punk references. Ok look, they're just really, really good! The highly anticipated ILLLS EP is due for release in June, but if you're itching for a bit of action while you wait, here's 'Teeth' fresh off the forthcoming EP. Prepare to feel a little nauseous at the (literally) vomit-inducing video accompanying the track, but then what's a little puke between friends? [...]
Say hello a duo who could well become your new favourite band. They are from Oxford (not that Oxford; there is an Oxford in Mississippi as well, and that's where they hail from.) Their brand of intensely melodic guitar-pop has been making waves in the States, and it could well do so over here. In fact, if there is any justice in the world, ILLLS [ Twitter / Facebook ] will be hot property by the end of 2012, or perhaps even before that: there is an EP arriving on June 18th, and it's going to be amazing [...]
ILLLS Bathroom Floor + Teeth Video Last spring I wrote about mysterious duo, ILLLS playing their first show as the openers for Youth Lagoon at Purling Hiss in Oxford MS, while creating quite a stir online with two incredible garage-psych songs wielding a slightly du-wop, pop exuberance complete with wild jangly guitar riffs, and clammoring drums over sing-songy reverbed shrills that had me shakin’ in my boots in anticipation for more tunes. Well the duo are back with a disgustingly weird video for their single “Teeth” and an announcement that an EP is on [...]
With the extra long weekend ahead (Well in the UK at least) we have an extra special Friday's Finest for you, something for everyone! Us and Slate The Disco have been at it again finding you the best tracks of the past week, enjoy! Slate The Disco: ILLLS – Teeth Hailing from Oxford, Mississippi, ILLLS are set to release their début EP ‘Dark Paradise’ on June 17th on London’s The Sounds of Sweet Nothing label (Unknown [...]
A disdain for orthographical exactitude and seemingly a penchant for stomach-churning disgust (Lord knows what the Oxford, US of A outfit splurged into that there bowl above) ILLLS' Teeth, the first thing they've rendered in any way digestible is a perfectly sticky gumball well worth having stuck up in your rear molars, or iPod memory, or Soundcloud favourites. Whatever. Envisage snowballing bubblegum blob the width of the Mississippi river bowling through their resident continent, picking up influential debris in its chewy body: from the gloopy goodness of Panda Bear's Tomboy to the punch-drunk ramshackle bluster of [...]
ILLLS | Teeth The queasy-looking artwork (Is it soup? Is it a plate of icing sugar? Is it something much, much worse?) right up to the very band name - ILLLS , with three ‘L’s - the intention is to leave you dizzy, dumbstruck and, if you’re a touch vulnerable, leaning over the sidewalk. ‘ Teeth ’ is the Oxford, U.S. band’s debut track - so good that it leaves you a peculiar state once the heady adrenaline rush dies down. Indeed, when the pace picks up and sends [...]
The Live Show: Six Acts to Catch In 2012 I’ve been thinking a lot about this topic. The live show. Does it still matter? With so many, many bedroom projects that never (physically) see the light of day, but produce these incredible recordings, I can’t help but feel a bit cheated when they actually do emerge and can’t live up to the hype. All of the bands below are serious performers that really wow’d me with their live show. Also, in case your not into 24/7 chilled out sex beats and [...]
Streetcars Teeth Here's another promising hazy band to come out of Mississippi. I use the term 'hazy' to describe their sound as well as the current state of information available on them. You may recall the grimy, scuzzy sounds of Flight , the grim, moodier [...]
